Impressive display with nothing behind it. August 25, 2005 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
The display is very impressive for monochrome LCD. This is the only nice thing I have to say about this GPS. The map shows only state and federal roads. No smaller roads show up.
The accuracy is not as advertised. I punched in a home point, walked several hunred feet and walked back. When I returned to the original spot, it read that I was 50 to 100 feet away (I tried it several times).
My first time using it in the field, it crashed on me. I tried everything. Even the power button did not work. I had to remove the batteries for a few minutes in order to get it to come back to life.
Very disappointed. I have contacted Lowrance by email. We will see how their customer support department is.
Poor Value November 1, 2005 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
[1 star - for some reason I cannot edit this feature] I originally rated this 3 stars because of its price and basic qualities. I have to say that I regret that decision. I have used 5 of these units since September for my work with teenagers. The most recent time was the last straw. They are cheap, but you get what you pay for. I have had to resort to ten kids using my personal garmin etrex too many times. -Cold start time is horrible, if it even does it at all. -Lowrance did not see fit to include a manual on using advanced mode(You must print all 92 pages yourself online). -I have set waypoints (which is very easy to do on this) and followed them back to find it wished me to go in the complete opposite direction when I was already 1000 feet away. -The design is NOT intuitive and easy to follow, each page has its own menu with not much corssover for commands. -The display is fairly clear, but small. Backlighting is real nice though.
Spend the extra money, buy the basic eTrex.
Buy a Garmin November 1, 2005 7 out of 16 found this review helpful
I also bought this iFINDER GO2 piece of crap. No wheres near as accurate as my Garmin. The Garmin doesn't even use WAAS technology, and it beats the crap out of this lowrance crap. Garmin the way to go. Where the hells lowrance based out of anyway....some 5th world country??
Don't know what they are talking about? May 2, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I have to tell you. I read the other reviews and am not really sure what they expected for the price. You get so moch more compared to comperably priced units form other brands. I primarily use mine to geocache and will admit the inability to download coordinates from the computer would be nice but I didn't want to spend the money to get a unit that did that. As far as accuraccy I feel that this is very good, I have never had a problem finding my caches and have never had a problem getting a lock within a reasonable amount of time. Backlight is great, base map is adequate, navigation page is good. Basically you can get much, much better but not for this price. Perfect for the weekend geocacher, hiker, biker.
A decent "starter" GPS for the price June 2, 2007 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
The I-Finder GO, at $79, has a lot to offer for a bare-bones unit. It has a 16-channel, WAAS capable receiver which usually locks onto the satellites in one minute or less (assuming you have not moved more than about 100 miles from the last position with the unit turned off). A full cold start, where the unit has to re-orient itself after being moved several hundred miles or more, is still quite fast, maybe 5 minutes or less. The unit can be set to "require" WAAS in calculating it's position; this results in all positions and track points being generally accurate to 7 meters or less (With WAAS disabled, positions can be hundreds of feet off if satellite DOP is high). The GO can usually get and maintain lock even inside wood frame buildings, automobiles, or under tree cover. Readability of the display is best in full sunlight, otherwise, the backlight offers two brightness levels. Battery life is excellent, and the GO uses two standard "AA"'s. The GO has a 4-pin serial output port for NMEA-0183 I/O so it can "talk" to other NMEA devices such as a chartplotter or autopilot. The unit can also be powered externally through this port by a 3 volt DC adapter (*DO NOT APPLY 12 volts TO THIS UNIT!*)
For only $79, there are obviously some features that the I-Finder GO doesn't offer. The most noticeable are the lack of removeable memory and the lack of a USB or RS-232 port for data transfer of Routes, Tracklogs, and Waypoints. The built-in basemap of the GO offers only major state and federal highways, andn only a few county roads and primary city streets (usually with no names). The built-in road map includes ONLY the Continental US and Hawaii; it DOES NOT include any road details for Alaska, or any part of Canada. One other caution about the GO: panning the map and planning routes is very slow. The price you pay for excellent battery life is a very underpowered map display processor.
If you need more features, the I-Finder H2O may be a better choice. The H2O and H2OC use SD flash card memory to store extra mapping detail and record user data like track logs, so they are expandable, whereas the GO is not. Lowrance's add-on maps are about the same price as Garmin's - around $100 gets you the MapCreate DVD for the US, There is also a set of MapCreate CD's for Canada, also priced at around $100.
One other note about Lowrance I-Finders: The track logs (actually called Trails by Lowrance) contain the horizontal position ONLY, and do not include the elevation or time/date stamp for the track points. If you need your track logs to contain these extra data fields, you may want to consider the Garmin GPS models (E-Trex Legend/Vista, 60Cx, or 76Cx) instead of the I-Finder.
