Fishermen: Read this before you go to the BWCAW September 28, 1997 13 out of 13 found this review helpful
This book always goes in my pack. It has a listing of most lakes in the BWCAW and Quetico that gives you size of the lake, species of fish in the lake, and relative amount of fishing pressure, among other things. It also has a chapter for each major species of fish. Also valuable is the step-by-step procedure for cleaning fish.
A CONCISE AND INFORMATIVE BOOK ON THE BWCA June 30, 1999 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
A DOWN TO Earth and useful book on the BWCA.I take north with me every time I go canoeing.i totally recommend this book to any who canoes and camps in the BWCA and for that matter anywhere else.Furtman has the local expertise and knowledge to make your trip safer, better, and more enjoyable. The FURTMAN name is well known and respected in the northern Minnesota region.
Good resource, very comprehensive August 15, 2002 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book was perfect and covered information on all major fish species and every lake in the Boundary Waters. It was a little confusing in some parts (ie some of the lure and fishing technique terminology was beyond me - a beginner), but it was a very useful resource.
Classic and essential... February 12, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Michael Furtman nails it on the head for the anglers new to Northwoods fishing. This is a must have book as it will provide you with the essentials for tackling the majority of fish you will find in the Boundary Waters. It's even small enough to take with you and read on the spot. Easy to read and understand along with many diagrams for further explanation.
A bit advanced for a newbie, but very useful April 18, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Let me first say that this is one fantastic reference book. It's almost worth the purchase price just for the lake data at the back, which includes among other things the species that inhabit almost every fishable lake in the BWCA and Quetico. The book has some occasionally confusing illustrations of underwater land formations, as well as diagrams of how to fillet the fish you catch. Furtman clearly knows his stuff.
I read through the whole text as a canoe guide who didn't know much about fishing and who had never even cleaned a fish. I still haven't filleted my own catch, but I feel confident I could do it if the situation called for it. As a tenderfoot fisherman, I had to read and re-read the book to absorb all of the valuable details, and I am going to purchase my own copy to bring on trail as a reference this summer. Like I said, the lake data, combined with the best lure types for each species, is worth the purchase price and will improve your results 100%.
