Great BASIC Handheld GPS June 7, 2008 I really enjoy using this very small screen color Garmin eTrex HC GPS unit. I use it with coordinates to find old gold and silver mines (please always respect private property!!) and for geocaching. I find this specific Garmin unit to be much more intuitive to use and save or update my data than similar Magellan units I have used in the past.
Note: Depending on your specific use, please ensure you are using the correct map Datum! Pros:Very fast satellite acquisition (after initial startup) As accurate as any other handheld GPS Great usage time between AA battery changes Very easy to use - even for newbie's Seems rugged enough Good "worst case scenario" backup for your vehicle GPS (provided you have a navigator on-board and can accept plain vanilla guidance).
Cons:Will not charge up your cell phone. (Yeah, I know....just kidding!) Some may need to carry a small magnifier to read the various screens Other cons: Please add you own.
eTrex Venture is a good buy. June 11, 2008 This is a good budget GPS for the hiker and bicyclist. I use it as a speedometer on my mountain bike, and take it on walks and jogs - it's great for measuring mileage. Because it syncs with atomic clock info from the gps satellites, it will be your most accurate clock too. I set my watches to it. If you need a barometric sensor and magnetic compass, step up to the Vista HCX.
Good GPS June 23, 2008 This GPS makes it easy to download maps. The screen is a bit small. If I buy another GPS unit I will purchase one with a S.D. card.
Garmin etrex June 29, 2008 Hello
I purchased this to use while riding my bike & I am very please with it. I was only able to load 1 state map (SC)into the etrex but no problem.
I recommend this etrex. Good buy.

Huge improvement--with reservations. July 5, 2008 I recently bought the eTrex Venture HC to replace my old b&w eTrex Vista. Huge improvement!
The Venture HC has a bright, contrasty screen that is MUCH easier to read. And it is light years more sensitive than the old Vista, locking onto 10-11 satellites in a matter of seconds, even indoors!
A few gripes: the new Venture seems to use the same processor as the old Vista, making scrolling or redrawing across the map s-l-o-o-o-w. And the base map in the new Venture is even WORSE than the base map on the old Vista. Compared side-by-side, Garmin has removed even major secondary roads, labels, etc. The Venture HC base map is essentially useless, thanks to Garmin's greed.
The Garmin Topo maps are pretty detailed, but expensive and clunky, based on Windows 95/98 technology. Houston, for instance, requires that you switch out two CD's to load the city. Ever heard of DVD's, guys? Both the Topo United States and the Topo Canada load fine on the eTrex Venture HC, even though the Canadian Topo is not listed as compatible on the Garmin web site.
