Great lil device! December 13, 2006 16 out of 18 found this review helpful
I bought a Garmin C350 a couple of weeks ago and have used it enough to say that this is one of the best things I've ever bought! Its siRF receiver is powerful and I think thats what gives it an edge over its predecessors. It catches a signal literally 10 seconds after switching it on! I'm new to Madison and I've no idea of the routes but this thing's guided me perfectly ever since I got it and I've traveled miles and miles on the city's roads - big or small - without worrying about getting lost. So far it hasnt taken me along any strange dirt roads (I've programmed it for "shortest route" rather than "fastest route") unlike some other GPSs that I read about, but I havent traveled long distances yet so I'm not a 100% sure of that. However I understand that the siRF receiver is quite powerful and hope that it'll be able to position me better and opt for conventional routes. The POIs are great and well organized, it recognized all the names that I entered.
The only thing that's missing is the text to voice feature (which reads out the name of the street on which it asks you to turn). BUT that is not a problem at all because the name of that street appears in a large font on the screen so all one has to do is take a quick look at the screen...its as simple as looking in your rear-view mirror.
Easy enough for anyone! April 13, 2007 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I had a friend buy this model Garmin and he raved about it. My biggest concern was, "is it easy to use"? Yes! Less than 5 minutes out of the box it was in my car and working! ANYONE can use it and I truly mean ANYONE!!
I recently had to take my husband to doctor in a nearby town. The receptionist made it clear how hard it was to find and gave me sooooo many directions. I wrote them down, not sure if the Garmin could handle the job! A true test it was! This building actually sat back behind another building. It took me there 1-2-3 and even brought me in the RIGHT driveway!
It's great having that peace of mind that I'm not going to get lost (again).
The Garmin gets my 5 stars for easy of use and for being on the money everytime I've needed it to come through for me! Another plus is that it comes with the car kit and charger. Some models do NOT include that. This one does!!
I'm very pleased! Great value! The kids loving changing the voices...we now have a british woman speaking to us!
Excellent Value for Money! December 1, 2006 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
Pro: Quick SiRF chipset, clear voice prompt, relatively simple to use Con: Volume button too sensitive
FYI, i own a Garmin GPS60CS prior to buying this unit. I found that I used my 60CS mostly in the car and i should get a GPS designed for navigating in a car. I am happy with the simplicity of this gps and the ease of use via the touch screen input as compared to many buttons on my 60CS. I knew that i needed the new chipset by SiRF, my 60CS didnt have it and satellite positioning is within 2 seconds - read more on SiRF and u know why u need it.
If you are getting a gps for purely in car navigation, i strongly recommend this one, and not forgetting the route recalcualtion is quick too!
Garmin C530 and C330 August 27, 2007 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I used Garmin C330 in NY, Philadelphia and Niagara Falls. I did not have any problem. It is great GPS. Recently I bought C530 to try the TTS hack. I did TTS hack on C530 and it works great. Today I got a chance to use both them together and see the difference beside C530 announce street names. 1. In term of Signal acquisition , both units I found same. I put togeter in my front car seat and both took equal time to get the signal and calculate the route. 2. Both will alert before .2 miles you take turn. Both will recalculate at same time if you missed the route. I saw some people mentioned that C530 is quicker than C330. But no, Both are same. 3. C530 display whole street name (like Reed Hartman Hwy) but C330 displays half name of the street (Like Reed Hartmn). 4. C530 screen is readable thn C330 in sunlight.
In my opinion I did not find any big difference beside screen visibelity in sunlight in C530. I tried C530 inside my house and it could not get the signal. same with C330 as well. The good thing with C530 is, you can hack it to get the street names to be announced and also it display almost full street name.
Update (9/15/2007): I used Garmin c530 from Cincinnati to Chicago Ohare airport. While going it took me through correct path (same path was displayed by Google map). While coming back It took different path from I-65 S. It alerted me that Road is closed in 45 miles. Also it alerted me about traffic in Chicago and took me through small streets instead of Highway. Traffic was really heavy though on I-90 W (while going to Chicago). I am surprised why my C530 alerted me. I did not subscribe any traffic service or so. Does it come by default? Anybody also had similar experience?
it does the job, but buy a different model August 31, 2007 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have owned this Garmin GPS for about 3 months and it has really helped out alot. I really hate maps and I'm not the most experienced driver, but with the Garmin c530 I am driving like a pro. It's very comforting knowing that I can find my way to a long distant job interview or navigate on busy highways.
However, the c530 isn't perfect. The biggest problem (as other reviewers have pointed out) is that this unit doesn't announce street names. Second I have experienced a few glitches. There have been a few times when the unit tells you to turn at the wrong address. Sometimes the unit gets really wacky and the voice says turn right and the screen shows to turn left. Another time I used the "point of intrest" feature to get some food and the GPS took me to a residential home address. I have also noticed that the recalculating feature lags sometimes for a few minutes (leaving you without any directions). It's almost like it decides to take a nap.
I don't regret buying this model, but I would rather own something that I know I don't need to upgrade. This one does the job, but it's almost embaressing sometimes when it screws up.
I have to give it a bit of credit. It does seem to hold up in the city and sometimes through tunnels. However, if you get stuck in a traffic jam in a big tunnel in the city, this unit will crap out and lose the signal. I also like how the unit estimates your arrival time. If you go the speed limit, the time estimate is pretty acurate.
