High Gear Compass January 9, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Compass has everything I need, time, date, alarm, and compass. But, it's a bit difficult to use. I've gotten use to it and it serves all my needs.

I have not purchased this item. It was selling in the National Geographic catalog for $49.95, so I was interested to look at it here, until I saw all the negative reviews. I tried going to the manufacturer's website to ask them to explain, or defend the product. A VERY BAD SIGN: their websites contact form made me jump through all the hoops, then sent an error message stating that this portion of the site is "down" but that their engineers are "working hard" on the problem. Yeah, right. I bet the part of the website that takes your money is working just fine....
No point if can't stand up to elements December 12, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this for my first 4 day wilderness backpacking trip in Yosemite high country. It worked well but died towards the end. I'm guessing the freezing temperatures and maybe resulting moisture must have gotten to it. I don't think it got down to 14F but it was definitely cold at night in the mountains. I've since moved on to non-electronic gadgets and that's my advice to wilderness hikers.
Needs a lot of improvement October 5, 2004 Used this Digital Compass for about 20 days and am returning it. It does not seem to be capable of giving reliable directions. The same position - try the reading twice and the directions are off wildly. Tried in open fields, inside my home and the same. Tried calibrating a dozen times and setting the Declination correctly, but no change.
