Hard to set up, but eventually, there will be joy in Mudville April 8, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
If you are lucky, and that's a big "if," you might have all your remotely controllable appliances working in short order. The software ambitiously attempts to guide you via wizards to set up every possible device for every possible activity. And if the software that runs on your PC fails to get everything right, the "Help" on the remote tries to correct any errors.
If you manage to get everything working via those two simple activities, you will be one happy camper. But if the simple process fails, you will find that the software is much less user friendly in troubleshooting mode. Here are a few of my biggest complaints.
1. Power on/off problems: I ran into this problem with both my television and with my AC/Heating unit. If the software erroneously thinks your device needs to send a "Power Toggle" command rather than separate "Power on" and "Power off" commands, it's hard to convince the remote to use the "Power on" and "Power off" commands since there is no easy way to delete or disable an extraneous command from the list of commands held in the database for that device. Even more frustrating is trying to use the on-remote "Help" button to correct these errors. When it works, life is good, but when it fails, it goes into an infinite loop of asking "Is the Device On?" then "Now is the Device On?". Well, "infinite" is *probably* an exaggeration (at least, I hope so), but I attempted at least two dozen cycles of that game before giving up. There's no way of knowing whether the remote is trying the same failing command over and over, or whether it is trying new commands every time, but from a user friendliness perspective, I would say the "Help" software should give up after about six failed attempts. 2. It was completely non-obvious which device type I should select to program my iPod docking station. It seems to me that this is one of the most common devices likely to be controlled remotely, yet there is no device type that includes "MP3 Player," "iPod," or "Docking Station" in its name. Eventually, I stumbled across the correct device type, but it should not have been so difficult. 3. When you enter your device brand and model number, it's completely unknown whether or not your device type was matched in the database. Sometime during the rest of the setup, you'll realize the answer is "no" when the software says, "I found a similar device: Acme 123. Is this OK to use?". Whether it helps or hurts to say "yes" for a device type you don't recognize is not clear. If you say "yes," the remote may be programmed to send some commands that are not actually available for your device, and as I mentioned in the "Power on/off" section, having an extra "Power Toggle" command might mean lots of troubleshooting. If you say "no," on the other hand," you'll have to manually "teach" the Harmony 670 every single command by shooting commands at it with the device's original remote.
These were the big hitters that caused me to spend half a day getting my TV, DVD, VCR, CD Player, iPod dock, Receiver, and AC/Heating unit all playing well together. Despite all the initial frustration, however, it truly is nice to have all the necessary devices power themselves on to the correct settings for the various audio-visual activities, replacing the five remotes that used to be required for those same activities. Since I'll hopefully be amortizing that initial pain over many days of happy button pushing, I'll still give this item a 4-star rating.
Simplifies my life and makes room on my end table December 15, 2006 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am very pleased with this purchase. I've had it for 5 days now and it works with my setup (HDTV, STB/DVR, DVD player) just fine. The web interface could use some improvement but the default logitech programming handled 90 percent of my needs. I had to add some custom buttons for Live TV, On Demand, tuner swap, and skipping one day forward and back through the on screen guide. That was fairly straightforward and now I have all the functionality I had with my 3 separate remotes. This remote would have earned 5 stars if there was a little bit more flexibility when customizing. For example, I would like to program the picture button to go right to the TV's video setup menu. Right now, it just displays the main TV setup menu. I don't want to overstate this weakness, it's not that big of a deal but it would be a nice enhancement. And its true of the whole harmony line. On the positive side, I really like the activity based approach. The remote becomes a hybrid providing at one time the buttons to control all your devices needed for any activity. For example, for the activity watch DVR, it turns on the TV and switches it to the appropriate input so you are ready to go. The volume, mute and aspect work the TV functions. All the other buttons work the STB/DVR. If I have to make specific adjustments to video or audio settings, I just press picture or sound and the central keypad now works the menu system for the TV instead of controlling the DVR. Press picture or sound again, it reverts back. Press, watch DVD, and it turns on the TV and DVD player, switches to the correct input on the TV and provides button control to both the TV and DVD player. With this remote, my wife and kids and easily control the setup without my help and now there is one remote on the end table instead of 3.
Previous review was right that the labels are a tad small but with my reading glasses and backlit buttons, I can see just fine. After a few weeks, I'm sure I won't even have to look. I will have the layout memorized.
I am sufficiently satisfied to buy a second for our family room
This remote is Stellar!!! January 3, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
There was a bit of a learning curve to program this unit but it is the first universal I have ever programed or used and I absolutely love it!! I have a Sony 60" Sxrd TV, Sony surround AV, Oppo DVD and Directv HD DVR. It controls all flawlessly after some trial and error with the setup. Plan to RTFM and spend a couple hours at it though. That said the end result better than sliced bread. I was tempted to throw away the four remotes that I was using to control the system prior to this purchase. Found a drawer for them instead... :) Stellar!!
It is to remotes, what ebola is to humans... January 7, 2007 3 out of 29 found this review helpful
Horrible remote. I'm computer savvy, and I love my home theatre, but this remote can not be utilized. First off the software it comes with infests your computer. It's worse than Norton or Realplayer, it puts links on your desktop, on your tool bar, and even puts links in your internet browser. Then it asks you for all of your model numbers. Then it crashes. Then it asks you a bunch of questions. Then it crashes. Then it uploads the codes to your remote. At which point your remote will turn off your t.v., and not let you turn it back on. If you, say, manually turn the t.v. on, about 30 seconds later your remote will turn it off. Awesome.
....Gets my Wife's Seal of Approval May 21, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have a Tivo, TV, Surround Receiver, DVD, Cable box, and VHS components. My existing remote (Marantz universal) controlled most of them, but could not generate the codes for the DVD. As the buttons were failing to respond, I needed a replacement that would be easy for my wife to use, and yet powerful enough for me to control some of the finer controls of my receiver, like channel level adjustment and sound mode. I've had the remote now for over a week, and couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. The set up is very easy. The troublesome DVD mentioned above did not respond after the initial set up. The software prompted me to use the DVD remote to generate a Power On code into the 670. This worked, and things went well after that. I love the fact that the 670 seems to make available ALL the function codes for a specific component. I can control almost every facet of my receiver by placing the functions on 'pages' which hold the functions I want, and in the order I place them. The Activites feature of this remote is so slick. There are three Activities button, plus one that holds 'More Activities'. Using the wonderful software, I can define each activity, like Listen to Music, Watch a Movie, Watch TV. The remote seems smart enough to know which components are already on or off, so that going from Watch TV to Watch a Movie directly, won't shut off the TV, since it is already on. One thing that pleasantly surprised me about this remote is its range, and ability to control components even if they are behind the cabinet door. Initially, I thought that the buttons were a bit small, but with time, you get used to it, and I'm not finding it a problem now. This is a wonderfully thought out product. I whole-heartedly recommend it!
