4 out of 5 stars Overall an excellent buy   March 26, 2007

I've spent untold amounts of money on universal remotes in the past, only to find that, if I'm lucky, my TV, DVD Player, and MAYBE Cable Box would work with the remote. And even then it would not be with full-functionality on each device. So I finally decided to put down some extra money on a nicer remote.

Pros: The entire remote! I have now retired 5 different remotes to a nice pile at the bottom of my bookshelf. Not only do I have all the functionality of my TV, Cable box, DVD Player, and VCR, this remote even picked up my off-brand cd player! I was completely not expecting this. And to top it all off...I no longer have to conduct training sessions for friends and family on how to use the remote. They want to listen to the radio? Press the "listen to music" action button and the radio comes on. Now want to play a video game? Press "Play Games" and the radio turns off, the tv comes on, and goes to the correct input mode for the video game system. Perfect! Even better, the remote is fully customizable. For instance, I accidentally told the remote to use the wrong tv input for playing a video game. I simply hook the remote to my computer and make the change in the logitech software. And to top it off, the remote has the "learning mode" that I came to love on a previous remote where I can set a random button on the remote to do the same thing as a button on the device's original remote. Perfect if you don't like the default setup of the remote.

Cons: The Setup (and reason 4 stars was given). I was prepared to come on here and make a hasty review to deem this remote horrible. I setup the remote following the instructions and nothing worked. I got an error resulting in a blank page with only a "Continue" button that did nothing. And Logitech support was not any help. However, going off of a message board tip, I uninstalled and then reinstalled the software for the remote and lo and behold, it works like a champ now!

UPDATE (1/08): One other problem I've noticed is an issue with switching modes with the TV turned off. For example, if I press watch TV to turn on the TV and cable box everything goes fine. After I finish, I press off to turn off the TV and Cable Box. Now, let's say two hours later I want to watch a move...so I press the "Watch Movie" button. When the TV turns on, it will almost always be in the wrong Video Source mode. I believe this is due to my TV taking a second to fully turn on. The remote seems to start switching Video modes before the TV is fully on and able to process the signal. So, I solved this problem by always pressing "Watch TV" before I turn off the TV and pressing it to turn on the TV. It's kind of annoying...but an easy fix for my problem.

2 out of 5 stars Still Buggy ! See comment from Logitech   August 30, 2008

I have been using this remote for about 18 months.

I wanted to add another DVR to my system, and the remote lets you customize the buttons along the top: "Watch Movie" Watch TV" and "Listen to Music". I tried mapping the new DVR to one of these buttons and while the software allowed me to do it, the button didn't work. I wrote to Logitech support and this is the response I got:

"Thank you for your recent inquiry about your Harmony Remote

We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing difficulties using your Harmony 670. The issue with the Harmony 670 activity buttons has been logged and addressed within our system.

This issue is scheduled to be fixed in our next comprehensive update. This will allow us to complete full testing and ensure that no other issues are introduced. We do not yet have a release date, as we are still in the process of defining the complete scope of this update. We do not expect this next release to be available any earlier than 8-12 weeks. In the mean time, please use the More Activities button to access your activities"

So they are saying wait another 2-3 months for a bug fix for a product that has been available for 2 years. Ugh.

I also wish this remote could "learn" codes like my pronto pro does. I know they have a great database of devices, but I have a video converter box (component to VGA) that would not be in their system.

5 out of 5 stars Great Remote   February 7, 2007

I got this remote based largely on reviews on this site. It now runs my Panasonic plasma, Yamaha receiver, Sony DVD and Scientific Atlanta cable/dvr box. No problems at all. I agree with other users that the interface needed to program the remote is not very clear, but I had it up and running without too much hassle. Don't be afraid to explore the online interface for a while before rushing to update the remote. There are no real instructions for the site, so expect some trial and error. I was surprised by how easy it was to learn commands for other remotes. The surround sound buttons for my Yamaha receiver weren't labeled correctly on the site, despite having found the correct model number. Rather than mess around trying different buttons to see which one to use, I just learned the surround sound commands from the Yamaha remote. It took no time and was easy. I highly recommend this remote, but you need to have a little patience.

4 out of 5 stars Works well   February 18, 2007

The remote works very well. I got it because it has a good layout for those who are used to the Tivo remotes. The buttons are kind of small and made of hard plastic, which takes some time adjusting to - definitely not as nice as the Tivo remote. The computer-based setup was easy enough, but it did require a bunch of iterations of configuring the remote on the computer, uploading the new codes on it, testing the remote with the system. Four stars only because I would have liked larger, more rubbery buttons instead.

4 out of 5 stars Good remote - buttons a bit small   September 25, 2007

Good remote, although some buttons a bit small. Used it to replace 3-4 remotes around house. The (programming) user interface is a bit annoying at first, but once you find the right links on the page, works great. I like the 'choose an activity' feature, which will basically create a macro to turn on/off multiple components. There are other harmony remotes with larger buttons or slightly different configurations, but they run a bit more expensive & I had emotional problem with spending 100 bucks on a remote :-)

You'll have to tinker with it a bit to get it to your liking - example: when I switch from satellite to DVD, I don't always want to turn off the TV & then turn on.

I'm a bit of a geek, so after toying with it for a night or two, I was good to go. The defaults will probably annoy you, but the real power of the remote is the ability to customize it extensively to your needs. You can easily tweak it & remap buttons, but it can be intimidating at first. If at first you don't succeed, try again.
