2 out of 5 stars Good for basic setup only!   April 13, 2008

After using the higher end URC Remotes and programming for customers, I thought that the RF20 would be a perfect solution for a cheap & easy to program remote.

Programming started out easy, setting up each device was a simple task. Getting each onto the remote was quite simple. But thats when the simplicity came to a screeching halt! When trying to customize the remote with different labels and trying to macro program the remote, it turned out to be one of the most difficult programming jobs that I have ever faced!!! After spending 4 hours at the customer's house, I was more frustrated than ever!!!

The company needs to update the processes in order to get simple macros programmed into the remote. For example: The power on macro works, but when I tried to set up certain switching between devices macro, it was impossible to get it programmed.

I would recommend this to someone who owns a very simple setup of a TV & dvd player, but not to someone who owns a receiver switched setup.

4 out of 5 stars Takes forever to program but works well   October 25, 2007
The RF20 is a pretty good remote, but it's a killer to program, esp the Macros. No lie took me ALL DAY and 4 Calls to Technical Support to program the thing. I have to say,URC's Technical Support Dept. was VERY HELPFUL one of the best and got me through it though. The instruction book seems to have everything needed listed but for some reason I found it hard to follow and somewhat annoying to read.
The remote's got a few quirks like it may take a few attempts to get it to learn from your other remotes, and having to come all the way out to square 1 to see if your learned commands took, but nothing I couldn't live with...Beats having 8 remotes on the coffee table. One thing though, my girlfriend hates the thing, feels its too complicated bouncing through the menus...so I guess this solves who controls the remote issue...LOL.
Once programed works well,I'd recommend it's purchase.

I hoped this product would give me some level of convenience dealing with the multi remote environment. No such luck! It is impossible to duplicate the functionality of my cable remote - at least for me. I have a Masters degree in technology but no amount of patience and time could make it worthwhile to try to program this cryptic device to easily control my system. Too good to be true - yes. It seems to work but is no shortcut to a better environment to enjoy HD/Surround-sound etc..........

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't control other RF devices   June 9, 2008

I bought this to replace a DISH Network RF remote in our bedroom. But it wasn't until I read the direction book that I found it won't control other RF devices. It requires its own radio receiver. So I returned it. (Thankfully Amazon has a very good return procedure.)

Otherwise, it worked well for the main functions, and the directions are well-written. I have an off-brand TV, (Digital Lifestyles), which didn't have a code number, so I had to program each button individually. Not every function was able to be programmed.

5 out of 5 stars Exactly What I Needed!!! Great Bargain!!   August 27, 2008
This is such a great deal. DVD that comes with the package is very helpful. Keeps from trying to understand the manual. Program codes worked great for Panasonic TV and Scientific Atlanta cable box. Program codes didn't work for Phillips surround sound DVD system. Used the Learning function and worked great. Have never had a universal remote work with the Phillips DVD system, so I was extremely satisfied. Would highly recommend this remote!!!
