Nice Remote if you follow the directions December 4, 2006 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
Some really "out there" reviews. I decided on this remote so we can control an HDTV, Receiver, DVD, VCR, DVR and xbox.
It took about 45 minutes to program (and I would recommend downloading the latest software from Logitech).
I had to recheck the connections to the reciever/TV etc. when it didnt turn on all the components and set them to the correct setting. At first, I thought some of the reviews were right, this is a POS.
After checking the connections, I had the xBox on the "tape" audio on the reciever, and went back to the logitech page and re-setted the remote.
It works flawlessly once set-up properly. Its programmable, so I can only assume many of the negative posts are people with no clue on how to follow on screen directions.....
Harmony Remote even better than I expected! January 28, 2007 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
Two of my TiVo remotes were finally wearing out. Some of the buttons on them didn't work so well anymore, and it was time to replace them. But I decided not to buy another TiVo remote. Nope, I went for the Logitech Harmony 880 Remote. Yeah, baby!
This one remote can control up to 15 devices, which means I can and have configured it for all the remote-controlled devices in my home - all the tvs, TiVos, DVD players, Cable Boxes, and even the surround sound box thing. I have to say, this is sooooo nice! Plus, it is rechargeable, which means no digging for batteries when it all of a sudden runs out.
You connect it to your PC with a USB cable to program it, and it is a snap. If you have the model numbers for your devices, which are usually found somewhere on the device itself, then it is a real no-brainer. Logitech had all of the devices I gave the setup program model numbers for in their database, and it was very quick to set those up. I had one TV that I couldn't find the model number for, so I just gave the manufacturer name, and it asked me if I had the remote for that device. I did, so it asked me to push a few specific buttons on the device so it could learn it, and it had figured out the best model match for that TV within 1 minute.
I love the remote, and so far I think I'll be fine with just having the one, since it is rare I'll be watching TV in more than one room at a time - LOL. Plus, I still have the original remotes that I'll tuck away for emergency use. I won't be at all surprised if I decide to get another Harmony sometime in the future, though.
The best price I found for the Harmony 880 was at Amazon.com. It is currently about $155 there, and has a $30 rebate offer with it. Couple that with my Amazon Prime membership, which affords me free 2-day shipping, and I am a very happy camper!
Great Features - Poor Charger August 12, 2005 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
My family and I are extremely happy with the layout and features of this remote.
However, we are on our second remote because the first suddenly refused to recharge. Now our second remote is suffering the same fate. The remote becomes more and more difficult in placing it upon the charger in just the right position so that it will charge. If the second follows the pattern of the first, this will become more and more difficult until the remote finally refuses to charge.
Waste of money - should be 0 stars, but that's not an option. February 28, 2006 10 out of 17 found this review helpful
Easy enough to upload equipment information & program, but the '1 press activity button' fails to correctly turn on the required components/settings 90% of the time. You end up hitting 'help' button and running thru a menu of 'yes/no' questions until the correct configuration is reached. The contacts for charging the remote are too recessed...the remote has to placed in the cradle just right or no contact is made. I end up using the OEM remotes half the time. Another thing: this remote doesn't duplicate OEM functions very well, in particular - Sony CD Jukebox - I programmed the 880, but the button options don't appear onscreen...the OEM remote is much easier to use. I wouldn't mind too much if this was a $50 remote, but for $175, it's a total waste. (If you spent over $200, you have too much money and should send some to me)
Good, but not Great March 31, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
When I bought this remote I had high hopes it would be the end of the multi-remote horror known as my entertainment center. First, the things I love about this remote... the massive list of options and settings Logitech supplies is mind boggling and allows any tech head to become immediately immersed in the product. You can set this remote up to do anything for any component that has an IR port, and the custom activities (read: macros) are a delight to setup, unlike other remotes. The color LCD screen is great and makes for a complete user experience, even allowing you to upload custom channel images and screensavers/themes to the remote to further customize this product to meet your own tastes. Oh, and did I mention it works for us mac users (a fact that alone should carry an extra star, but I won't get all Apple fanboy in the reviews)?!
Now the bad... First on the list has to be the small buttons, especially the position of the play/pause/forward and rewind sets. Perhaps all Tivo users have been spoiled by that product's great remote layout and rubber buttons, but the Harmony remote's layout makes operating a Tivo a nightmare (at least for right handed users... more on that in a sec). The main buttons for any DVR are the play/search controls and having them occupy the right half of the remote with such small buttons makes it difficult to use comfortably. Next, while the 880's shape is similar to the famous Tivo remote the plastic used in the manufacturing of the remote makes the device almost slippery and I've felt more like a person trying to keep a bar of soap in his hands than a master of my digital domain. Finally, placing the USB terminal at the front of the remote, forcing the designers to place the IR transmitter below, was the worst of the design flaws I found on the 880. This IR placement makes it hard to point the remote directly at a device to control it with the tip of an index finger, but instead forces the user to tilt the remote up and use their thumbs to operate the device. For me this is uncomfortable and makes the small buttons even more of a problem.
Overall I'm happy with the remote, a little rubber pads on the underside seem to help with the slickness of the plastic, and my wife doesn't have a problem operating and programming the remote, but with any remote the tactile experience and button placement is the biggest feature for me and the 880 doesn't have me abandoning my Tivo remote with its simple macros and my DVD remote just yet.
