Good if you can program it. November 24, 2005 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I struggled for days with this. A big problem is the lack of feedback (e.g. led flash) when you enter codes, select device, etc.If you do it correctly, all is well. If not, it does not control the device, but you don't know what's wrong (key not pressed hard enough, wrong code number etc). I finallly programed my tv and dvd, but could not control the Time Warner digital cable box, despite reprograming the cable key to digital cable (not an obvious thing to do) after calling Sony. I appreciate the feedback on this site mentioning that the set key has to be pressed hard. I later got a Sony rmv710, which is big, but worked well.
Too Easy... August 22, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first Universal Remote Control purchase, but I can assure you that the next time I need a remote control, I will be this product again. For Sony products, it automatically recognized the TV and DVD Player. And configuring our GE VCR was equally simple. Now I don't have the clutter of multiple remote controls which gives me a free hand to hold my favorite adult beverage...excellent!!!
Excellent value for a good remote December 5, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a near perfect remote to replace a lost or damaged TV remote and you can't beat the price for what you get.
I have a 1996 JVC TV set with a damaged remote. I wanted a replacement remote that would operate all of the features on my set, including the operation of the on-screen menus.
This remote cost me $10 at a big box retailer and took less than five minutes to read the instructions and program it for my set, it was really easy as there was only one code for JVC and I didn't have to press the set button any harder than normal unlike the other reviews.
The remote operated the set beautifully allowing me to move around the onscreen menus and change settings using the 4 arrow keys, operate the sleep function, change channels by number or channel up/down, change the TV input, mute, last channel recall, display the channel and time, and even use the picture in picture feature (although I only have one tuner).
The remote looks and feels like an expensive remote that came with the TV rather than a cheap $10 universal remote. The ergonomics are terrific with large volume and channel up/down controls that are angled toward the center (a nice touch). Also, the 4 arrow keys are slightly raised and angled toward the center making in pleasant to slide your thumb over them. Even the color co-ordination of the remote and the keys are easy on the eyes.
I verified that removing the batteries for a short period of time does not erase the memory, another nice feature.
The remote does have some short comings.
1) It does not have a closed caption key which I think any remote should have. For this reason, I rated the remote 4 stars instead of 5.
2) My original TV remote had a special button to change the mode from bright room, choice, theater, etc. that this remote lacks. I have to use the keys on the TV set to change this. However, as long as I leave my set on choice, I can make all the changes I want to it using the remote, so that is fine.
3) The picture in picture has many functions using the rewind, play, fast forward, record, stop, and pause keys, but none of them can enlarge the small picture in picture window, a special feature on my set. I don't really care as I only have one tuner, but I thought I should mention it.
4) Although I don't use the other features like DVD, Cable Box, and VCR, I did notice that it did not have an auxiliary option for sound systems for those that have them.
Doesn't work for my Dish August 20, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I suppose it's a great remote if you have one of the brands that are compatible with this. But my Dish Network receiver wasn't on the list of supported items. Tried the method of searching all the codes for one that worked. Didn't work. Called Sony, and they talked me through some steps. After 15 minutes it worked. Then the the batteries accidentally fell out - my kids' fault, not Sony's fault, but the remote lost the code. Tried going throught the steps of searching for the code. That didn't work. Didn't have the energy to find Sony's number again and call. Just gave up.
Works Like A Champ September 3, 2005 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this universal remote because I somehow managed to lose my TV remote. I have three Sony devices bought within the last six year (TV, VCR, and DVD player). This universal remote worked splendidly right out of the box. One of my worries was that I would no longer have all of my picture-in-picture capabilites. Through some experimentation (i.e. push buttons and see what happens) however, I was able to find most of the picture-in-picture functions.
I'm still missing some of the less often used functions my original TV remote, but for the price I paid for this remote, I'm happy.
If possible, I'd take off half a star for lack of great documentation.
