As a sound engineer I have spent thousands of hours wearing all sorts of headphones. The overall fidelity of these phones is not very good...barely comparable with those that came free with my Sharp MD player. For $25 I didn't expect much however I did expect some degree of noise cancellation. These do not appreciably cancel noise at all! In fact they add a high frequency hiss when the circuit is activated. Still worse, these are not comfortable. The band is not padded and is too narrow for a headset that weighs as much as these. The battery compartment is on the inside of the band (see picture)and digs into my head. I consider these to be unwearable, marginally listenable, and a waste of money.

For very short periods these headphone work well... good sound, reasonable noise reduction. BUT there is no well for your ears so the foam pads press your ears flat and for extended wear (as in anything more than about 30 minutes) they hurt. The battery compartment also presses against your head. It doesn't matter how great the sound quality is if you can't wear these for more than 30 min at a time.
I expected more from Sony. This is the first time I've been really disappointed with a Sony product.

These are a great pair of headphones for the price. I was nearly put off from buying them because of several of the complaints of other reviewers. Here's my experience.
When you turn the noise cancelling feature on, there is a slight hissing sound. Although at least one person found this irritating, I've found that once the music starts playing it's completely imperceptable. In 20-30 hours of listening, I haven't noticed it once.
Since the earpieces do not fully surround the ear, the circular soft foam rests against the ear. Again, one reviewer complained that after several hours, his ears were uncomfortable. I've worn them for more than eight hours per day for the past two days and have noticed no irritation. Note that I have a large head--my hat size scares even me. I also wear glasses. I'd expect that if anyone was to be irritated by a tight fitting pair of heaphones, it would be me.
One person also complained that the battery compartment, which is located on the right earpiece support arm, pressed into his head. I can nearly fit a pencil between the battery compartment and my head, so I certainly cannot echo this issue. I'm now wondering whether my head was compressed into an oblate ellipsoid at birth. Maybe its time to buy a large hat.
I've found that the sound is comparable to a pair of Sony noise cancelling headphones for which I paid more than $200. The treble is clear and sharp and the bass is strong enough to please.
Everything, however, was not perfect, but maybe I'm the issue, not the headphones. I made a dumb assumption when I bought these headphones. From looking at the pictures, I assumed that there was a center hinge and that they would fold up into a neat package for traveling. They don't. Although the earpieces swivel in a nearly universal fashion, they do not fold up in a convenient way for storage, as do another pair of Sony headphones that I have. Woe is me.
Notwithstanding that, I really like these headphones.
Low-Frequency Noise-Cancelling, not full-spectrum noise-eliminating - understand the difference October 13, 2005

You need to understand what these things are designed for - low frequency noise reduction.. take a look at the specs. and check-out the frequency range that they attenuate - unfortunately this isn't clearly spelled-out.. these work GREAT on an airplane with low-frequency RUMBLE.. they suck at eliminating high-frequency noise, which is OK since that's not what they were intended for.. if you're not planning to use these to fly with then I'd suggest looking at an in-ear model that will seal your ear canal to outside noise (you know, like an ear plug).. otherwise you will probably be sadly disappointed with their performance (the white-noise hissing is a side effect of the noise cancelling - it is not the noise-cancelling in itself).. They really work well within the frequency range they were intended to block. Outside of that they do nothing that normal headphones don't do... When I first got them and tried them in the house I was ready to send them back.. then got on an airplane and said OOOHHHHH, THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE INTENDED FOR!

I'm so disappointed with these that it motivated me to write this my first online review.
Was excited to try on first flight after purchase, to enjoy "almost quiet" alone or with my music on flights. Sitting near back of noisy MD88, placed over ears and turned on.
Sony product info and website clarified that only low-frequency noise is canceled, but I'm convinced that most of the engine and flight noise should have been canceled --otherwise what is the point of noise-canceling headphones advertised for in-flight use?
I compared over and over the Sony MDR-NC6 (with canceling "on" of course :) with my two-dollar earplugs --the soft type you squeeze and that swell in your ear for a good fit.
* Sony MDR-NC6 gave only 40 - 50% noise reduction, the remaining in-flight noise was quite annoying.
* Earplugs gave at least 90% noise reduction, the in-flight noise was hardly noticible.
The earplugs stay, the Sony will not be used:
* Sony noise-canceling only 1/2 as quiet as $2 earplugs.
* Sony sound fidelity as normal-use headphones not very good.
* Sony when noise-canceling adds its own constant and significant 'hissing' noise.
* Sony fit is most uncomfortably tight.
As this is my first noise-canceling product and experience, perhaps my expectations are too high -in which case I learned that noise-canceling headphones cannot be expected to cancel much typical in-flight noise?
