Excellent Phones September 19, 2006 27 out of 27 found this review helpful
For anyone who likes wireless headphones, the Sennheiser RS-140 phones are an excellent choice. I've tried many different types of wireless headphones, both RF and IR, and the RS-140 is far and away the best of them all. I found them vastly superior to Sennheiser's RS-130 version, which I also own but no longer use. The RS-140's sound clarity is superior to the RS-130 version for both speech and music, which makes the RS-140s good for anyone who dislikes muddy sound. They are particularly good for anyone with hearing loss. Regardless of age, people who have any degree of hearing impairment will appreciate both the clarity of the 140's sound, especially of speech, and the availability of the balance control, which is invaluable for anyone who has greater hearing loss in one ear than in the other. Unlike some reviewers, I had no difficulty with RF reception when moving into nearby rooms with the headphones on--the sound remained clear within any reasonable distance of the source. The RS-140 has the same slight periodic volume variations that I experienced with the RS-130, and the same annoying amber volume light, but neither of these problems detracts materially from the overall superiority of the RS-140 phones over other wireless models I've tried. The beeps reported by some reviewers are indeed annoying at times, but at least they have the advantage of telling the user that the lack of signal is probably caused by the audio source, not by the headphone unit itself, which helps in tracking down the cause of any audio problems that may arise. Sennheiser apparently has some quality control problems; I had to exchange the first RS-140 I ordered because the charging unit didn't work, but Amazon replaced the set promptly, and the set I now have is fine. Overall, the RS-140 is, as noted above, the best wireless headphone set I've found, and should make an excellent gift for anyone who has hearing impairment or who just likes wireless phones with clear sound and room-to-room portability. Overall, 4 1/2 stars would probably be a fair rating, but since you can't give half-star ratings, the RS-140 is close enough to 5 stars to deserve the higher score.
Excellent wireless headphones March 23, 2006 25 out of 25 found this review helpful
I purchased the Sennheiser RS-140 wireless headphones several months ago to get rid of the rat tangle with wired headphones. I have a hearing loss in both ears and typically watch television and listen to music with headphones to avoid annoying the neighbors, so wireless headphones are a much better option since I have more freedom to move about.
I have been extremely pleased with the comfort and sound of the Sennheiser RS-140 headphones. I do not hear any hiss or pop while moving around inside, although I do hear some hiss and dropouts if I am outside several feet away from the transmitter. I have literally worn these headphones all day without recharging them and they remain quite comfortable.
These headphones do have a few caveats, however. I have a neighbor with a wireless device that sometimes interferes with the headphones, although changing channels solves the problem. The balance and volume controls are on the back of the right can so laying on a couch, sitting in high-backed chair, or propping your head against a pillow may inadvertently change either or both controls. Even so, I find having the volume control easily accessible is very convenient.
More Noise Than Music September 7, 2005 22 out of 35 found this review helpful
I bought these wireless headphones because they had a five star rating at the time of my purchase. Little did I know that there were only three reviews that took up the whole first page.
These headphones do not work. I can stand right next to the base which transmits signal, and it will alternate between pure static and noisy music. Even when you get signal, it's like bad radio reception.
Readers please note that there are many different "reconditioned" models from the same manufacturer for sale on Amazon, and they are all likely returns for the very same reason I detailed here.
Beware!
Tip to Minimize Hiss June 15, 2006 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
I've only had these headphones for a few days, but I'm very pleased with them so far. Initially, I found that there was noticeable hiss in the background when I had the transmitter plugged into the headphone jack on my TV. But when I plugged the transmitter into the audio output jacks on the back of the TV, which provides a stronger output signal, the hiss was reduced to the point where it is no longer an issue. A stronger input to the headphones allows you to lower the volume control on the headphones, which greatly reduces hiss on lower volume audio content. (There is an LED on the unit which alerts you to a low input signal.)
The headphones sound quite good and they're comfortable (for me). They have very good reception in the same room as the transmitter. I was able to maintain good reception when walking around to other rooms, but there was some expected occasional noise. All in all, I'm pleased with the reception since I bought these headphones to eliminate the use of a cord while in the same room.
Worthless warranty March 9, 2006 16 out of 31 found this review helpful
I purchased this item from Office Depot in January. It worked fine for a few weeks. Then one of the ear phones went dead intermittently. Sennheiser authorized the return in February, as the set has a two year warranty. It is now March and I called Sennheiser to find out why I had not received a repair or replacement. I was told that the set has to be replaced, but that none are in stock and perhaps late in April the stock may be replenished. They could not refund the purchase price because I bought it from Office Depot. That is why my rating for this item is 1 star.
