Definitely worth it, but shop around. January 10, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
These are without a doubt the only earphones I can see myself using for the foreseeable future.
A few years ago, I would have been quite happy with your average free-with-something earphones. Then I discovered what I was missing, with a pair of Shure E2Cs. But after many replacement pairs (durability problems), I finally gave up, and started looking for something else that would give me an even richer sound. And my, did I find it.
The sound and comfort on these is unparalleled. I know the price is a bit steep to say the least, but shop around. I found a pair, new in their packaging and never used, for a lot cheaper on a certain internet auction site. And if you're here from the UK like myself, buying from a US seller will save you a ridiculous amount with the current exchange rate.
You can also save money with an earlier Custom pair. Have a look on the Klipsch website, search the forums. Some earphones are better suited to certain genres of music; the Custom-2s work well with hiphop and rap, whereas Image does justice to the subtleties of classical music, soundtracks, and folk. That said, it's definitely worth tweaking the EQ settings of your music player for that perfect clarity of sound.
Don't underestimate the tiny size of these either. One earphone, from where the wire joins it to the tip of the ear gel, is about an inch in length. When I was looking around for earphones, I was worried these would fall out of my ears because of their size. My previous ones had looped over my ear, whereas these don't. But once you've taken the time to find the right ear gel size for you, I've found they fit perfectly. I prefer the double-flanged ear gels to the ones pictured, but it differs from person to person. Imagine the seal you get with earplugs, yet immensely more comfortable, and quicker. With the lack of environmental noise, and the comfort of the earphones (it's easy forget you're wearing them), it really feels as if the music is being generated inside your head.
If you can find them for the right price, I cannot recommend them more highly. I would say however that I can't comment on their durability yet, but with the protective carry case that comes with them, it will all depend on their usage.
The best headphones I have ever listened to... January 21, 2008 6 out of 9 found this review helpful
The Klipsch Custom-2's are the best headphones I have ever listened to. Just as the product description says, there are very crisp highs, deep lows, and a full spectrum in between. Listening to a wide range of music on my iPod touch I have been able hear things in songs that I never knew where there. The sound is so clean that it has improved my listening enjoyment by an order of magnitude.
In addition to the spectacular sound quality, the construction and included extras make the entire package simply stunning. The cloth wrapped cable is very durable, low friction, and has a great feel to it. Unlike other earbuds that have vinyl cables that constantly get snagged and tied into knots, the Custom-2's simply uncoil without any fuss. The right angle connector has an excellent low profile and a very nice flexible strain relief. It is snug and resistant to accidental disconnect, yet has enough protection to prevent damage. The flush, over the ear design allows for use in high activity. Finally, the included case is a very nice complement. It is large and roomy, comfortably fitting the headphones and an iPod. It is durable, well constructed, and great looking.
The only downside is that, as the documentation with the headphones and Klipsch website states, it can be difficult to find a good seal. The included array of ear gels is quite extensive and easy to swap out. However, it may take quite a while to find a good comfortable seal, especially if you haven't used canal phones extensively before. Once you find the right gels and cable placement for a good seal, though, you will have great sound with very deep bass. If you are having difficulty, take a read through the Klipsch Forums on their website (klipsch.com). They have a number of tips coming straight from the engineers who frequently participate in the discussions.
Overall I highly recommend the Custom-2's. I purchased mine directly from Klipsch shortly after they were released.
Great headphones, solid construction, perfect fit February 28, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I used to own the Shure E500 which are amazing headphones but with a very poor cable that usually breaks after months of use. The great thing is that Shure has a two year warranty and they just replace them with a new pair, no questions asked. The other thing is that they don;t always stay in place in the ear and tend to fall off, this does not happen with the Klipsch Custom-2. You can bend the little piece that goes behind your hear for a perfect fit. I love the quality of the cable, it's not rubber so it won't cracked after being bent over and over behind your ear. I think the sound quality is good, slightly below the E500 but very good and they totally block the outside noise. One recommendation would be to have a shorter cable with an extension (like the Shure) to allow for using a mic accessory for iphone or other mobile phones. I would def. recommend this product.
High End Earphones: Klipsch Custom-3's AND Image X-10's Review July 29, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
SO, you're shopping for high-end earphones, eh? Let me begin with this: you've found the right products.
This is a review of BOTH the Klipsch Image X-10 earphones and the Klipsch Custom-3 earphones. (Amazon puts the reviews for all Klipsch headphones together for some reason...)
I've had a pair of the Klipsch Image earphones for a couple months now. (Now they introduced a cheaper version, the Image X-5, and renamed the original Image the Image X-10...so that is what I will refer to them as.) The Image X-10's are a fantastic pair of earphones. They are TINY...really, really small. This makes them extremely portable, light, and comfortable. When I first got the Image X-10's in, I simply placed them in my ears and the seal was perfect - on the first try with the standard medium single flange gels! It is EXTREMELY easy to insert and remove these earphones. They are very, very comfortable. I have worn them for hours without my ears hurting or itching...they feel natural. The sound quality is great as well, and when you consider their size, it is unbelievable how they designed these earphones. Stock iPod earphones and even "upgrade" headphones will pale in comparison to the sound quality and clarity of the Image X-10's. One of the highlights is the soundstage - with the Images, you can place each of the instruments in a song around your head...very distinct. These earphones provide exceptional quality and comfort. Definitely more clarity than my usual favorite headphones, the Sennheiser PX100 (open air...very inexpensive, about $30-40, yet an incredible warm sound with great bass, best deal out there for headphones). The Images have very good sound isolation with the single flange gels I use, and you can get a little extra with the double flanges.
I just got my Klipsch Custom-3's in the mail today. When I first put the earphones on, I had some trouble getting the fit/seal right, so I tried moving up to the single flange large ear gel instead of the medium ones that come on the earphones. (On the Image X-10s, I use the medium single flange gel and it works perfectly...kind of weird that I have to use a large on the Custom-3's to get the seal right when it should be the same as the Images...) So far, the large ear gel is pretty comfortable in my ear, and it's been there for a good two hours now. They are a bit troublesome and time consuming to take off and on, but that's just how these style headphones are. (You have to get the seal right while at the same time properly wrapping the loop around the back of your ear...it gets easier with practice.) Sound quality on the Custom-3's is unprecedented and exceptional....can't even begin to describe it. Better than the Image X-10's. From what I've heard, it is better than the comparable Shure SE-420s that cost nearly twice as much. I bought the Custom-3's for that extra bit of sound quality, and to use as In Ear Monitors for singing vocals. They are designed perfectly for this use.
The Custom-3's do block out a ton of exterior noise, so in the end, they seem to be built for professionals on stage or hardcore audiophiles who want the best sound quality in a small package. Don't try to talk to people or hear outside noise with these on, let alone with music playing. I wouldn't want to wear these walking around on the street or in public, I'd prefer the Images or some less isolating headphones. Comfort is good, but the Image X-10's are definitely better...since they are so small and light, you don't even know they are in your ear. HOWEVER, the wire on the Images sticks straight out of the ear, where as the Custom-3's are more flush, so you can sleep on them better (but still, as with nearly all earphones, you will feel some pressure pushing in).
In the end, here's my best advice:
Looking for excellent sound quality, comfort, easy accessibility (on and off), and portability? Go with the Image X-10's. You will NOT be disappointed. What they lack in sound quality is more than made up for by their size and comfort. And let me emphasize, these do NOT lack in sound quality...they will blow most every other earphone out of the water.
BUT, if you are looking for the absolute best sound quality, bar none...Maybe you are a professional musician/audiophile/studio mixer/etc...then the Custom-3's might be for you.
I fit both categories, so that's how I ended up with both the Images and the Custom-3's.
In the end, I highly recommend both earphones. You really just need to know your intentions and decide between the two based upon what you plan to use them for. Both are excellent headphones, Klipsch really hit the mark right on. You won't be disappointed with either choice. The tradeoff between the best sound quality and best comfort will be apparent in any other competing earphone, as the laws of physics do limit the size of miniature components. In my opinion, Klipsch has really done an excellent job and the Image X-10's and the Custom-3's provide two distinct options for the high-end earphone buyer.
Amazing May 1, 2008 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
These earphones are amazingly comfortable. The sounds quality is amazing. The bass is unusually deep and present for earphones. They do not need a headphone amplifier. They come with a number of gel pieces that should fit most any ear.
The price is steep and I do not know how well they will hold up. The wires are very thin. I suspect that they could be very fragile. They come with an excellent case. If a person was careful to make sure that they are put away properly after each use, I would think that they would last pretty well. I am not sure that they would be the best for rigorous exercise.
I believe that anyone that hears these earphones will be amazed. I think that it would also be fair to say that these earphones are colored in their sound quality. If you want flat, accurate and slightly analytical sound, the Etymotic would be a better choice.
