5 out of 5 stars Happy with the Purchase   April 18, 2008

Small and portable. Excellent screen. Playing long and clear. This is 3rd portable DVD player owned and we really like it. Bought for extended use on airplane ride. Not worried about volume, can hear it just fine under normal conditions.

4 out of 5 stars If it's all about the picture   July 6, 2008

When shopping at Best Buy for a portable DVD player, I tried a Toshiba, the Panasonic LS86 and asked about a Sony. My salesperson, who was knowledgeable, steered me away from the Sony, saying he didn't like it because it has a "glossy screen." So I tried the current Toshiba 9" and the Panasonic LS86, touted for its 13 hour battery life. I selected the LS86 because it has better blacks, meaning the Toshiba had a more washed out picture. I took the LS86 home and while learning how to use it I was pleased at the degree of control you have. (Yes, this will soon be a review of the DVP-FX820 - I returned the LS86 and got an FX820 - but first a little more about the Panasonic.) With the LS86 you have great control: you can control the brightness of the subtitles, you can reposition them, you have several factory presets for picture and one user picture preset, there are degrees of noise reduction available, a number of audio settings to control the tone of the sound and its stereo spread. It seemed great except for one thing: the picture was slightly disappointing. Text was awfully chunky. The edges of things looked rough. In a word, it had a lot of aliasing.

I went on line to read some reviews of the LS86. I'd read reviews prior to shopping but, somehow, hadn't found any for the current Sony player, the DVP-FX820. On my second internet visit I found the Sony right away. When I learned it has much greater resolution, I packed up the LS86, went back to the store and exchanged.

The DVP-FX820 has lots more pixels and that makes for a lots better picture. It has less control over those pixels, but as nice as adjustments are, they don't compensate for a poorer image. So, in my mind, the Sony is better.
___________

The downside of the FX820: this model has a fair amount of edge enhancement, or sharpening. And there's no way to control it. I'm not going to describe what it looks like, because if you own one of these units and edge enhancement is below your radar, why point it out.

What about the glossy screen the salesperson mentioned? When he said "glossy screen," I imagined that the screen itself was shiny. What he was referring to is the fact that the screen is surrounded by a shiny black plastic bezel. A matte finish would be less distracting, but the shiny plastic should not be a deal breaker.

The contrast of the default LCD settings: I had to work a little with the "Backlight" and "Contrast" settings to keep the blacks from being crushed. Otherwise, things like someone's head of black hair might lose their detail.

_____________

Summary: A good solid unit with a consumer-oriented design philosophy. The controls are basic and fairly simple to operate. The picture seems to be the best in its price range. The audio, through headphones, is fine.

5 out of 5 stars CCD REAR VIEW CAMERA OPTION   April 24, 2008

Sony DVP-FX820 8", this is a great dvd player for several reasons.
I was at Ultimate Electronics Mpls shopping for 2 - 46" Sam's for the monster garage.
I was about to leave the store being tired and brain damaged from all the choices when I stumbled
onto this new model FX820.

10 minutes later it's out of the box in my truck and viewing the CCD camera view out the back.
This has been an ongoing pending project for months to get this done.
I can now back up to enclosed motorcycle trailer dead on target in the middle of the night w/o
getting out and checking for permanent DAMAGE. That's a snow storm story in it's self.

Bring it into the office and simply plug in the Bose sound system and enjoy theater action at it's best right in my lap.

I researched all the options to use my Apple laptop as the infared CCD viewer, and it's not possible under $200.
Not only is playing DVD's on the laptop a heavy heated process, but a huge pain in the vehicle being the laptop's screen doesn't rotate 180 and lay flat like this Sony player can.
It's simply not possible in close quarters with high performance 5 speed shifter in the way for a laptop.

Next option now is making velcro holster on the face of the dash to hold the SONY player for viewing for travel enjoyment and camera viewer. Just tap into stereo or the dual head phones jack on player.

I'm also a photographer using highend digital Canon SLR's, and video gear and this player with be the greatest gadget to view RAW images straight out of the camera before processing.
Yes, I'm a Happy Camper having just picked it 3 weeks ago. This QUALITY for under $200, are they nuts?

Here's the problem I have buying products on-line. I never really get a true sense of quality of what I'm looking at in a micro image thumbnail until it's in my hand the first time. My hard drive is full of research.
The biggest hurdle to start with, there's so many out there. Sony was a hands down choice to begin with.

I'll bet NASA will have these on board for the shuttle crew. The heck with free satellite TV while in orbit.
Me, I'd be watching re-runs of Mad TV, and Married with Snots.

I payed a little more at the store than here, and if I did have an issue, I'd be back in the store within 5 minutes. That's a bit difficult with a mail ordered deal. My research was complete that day. But to see People paid $1000 for players not that long ago, this is very cool.
I'll be back at this page to purchase the next one or two for wedding gifts. They won't be returning this one.
Cheers..

3 out of 5 stars Great player....BUT!!   June 26, 2008

This player is as good as everyone says it is. BUT it does NOT play DVD-R like the first reviewer says. I had a cheap portable player and wanted to replace it with something quality. After a lot of research I decided on this Sony. The Sony website even says it will play DVD-Rs, but once you open the manual it says only if they're formatted a special way. False advertising. I don't understand since even the super cheapo portable DVD player would play any disc, so why can't Sony figure it out? So now I have to return a second player (other was a Coby TF-DVD7107 where the battery only lasted 1 hour and skipped at random.) So if you plan on playing DVD-Rs, it's 1 star. Otherwise it seems ok.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but only NTSC   May 22, 2008

Overall the best product for the price range right now (May 2008). I did a lot of research and is happy with the player. The only issues that I see are the difficulty bypassing the region code and the fact that it only plays NTSC DVDs (PAL won't work). This is a big problem with a portable DVD player if you are traveling internationally or have DVDs from around the world. It is pretty easy to convert, but takes time.
