Great value / very decent sound September 26, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
By way of background, I bought these to replace a set of old Soundesign speakers canabalized from a bookshelf system that died long ago. They are being driven off an old LXI rack system which is still getting the job done despite the absense of micro-chips. Hooking the SSF-6000's up, I was initially dismayed by the noticable hiss at lower volumes and in the high range. To be fair, I was in such hurry to hook them up I used to crummy speaker wire provided with the set, something I will rectify soon. The speakers really do well in the low range, however. I cranked them up and went into the other room to see how the sound carried, and litterally my house was shaking. I could not beleive how powerful they are, given that at the local electronics store, they are selling the bottom of the line 2-way bookshelf for $100 and telling me that for the kind of money I wanted to pay, I could basiclly expect the same tinny quality as the speakers I wanted to replace. The SSF-6000 is a definite upgrade; I would rate them "4" if you like to listen to classical at low volume, but for the price, particularly if the music you listen to has the driving bass, easily a 5. Also, although the cabinets are solid, the covers seemed a little flimsy to me.
Don't buy them January 25, 2008 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
I bought these from CC and tried them out for about 3 weeks. I thought they sounded good. Then I decided to also buy a pair of Polk Audio R50's from Fry's for $60 a piece. I hooked up one of each speaker to my Technics 100 wpc stereo. The difference is amazing. The Polks have a much cleaner sound. The highs on the Polks are more pronounced. This SONY speaker seems muddy in comparison. I like the cherry look of the Polks better. Since the Polks are also cheaper, don't buy these. The only problem is that Polk is phasing out the R line so you may not be able to buy them for too long after this review. The SONY's are being returned.
You get what you pay for February 27, 2008 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I returned these speakers after listening to them for a week. These were for bedroom use. I listen to classical music mostly. These speakers reproduce solo instruments, such as piano, guitar, or violin, quite well, but orchestral music comes out muddy and unpleasant. At best, you feel that you are listening to the orchestra from behind closed doors. The price is good for what they are but don't expect perfection if you are fussy about sound. After returning these, I spent about twice as much and bought a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 60 3-Way Floorstanding Speaker, Cherry Finish (Single). They are considerably better -- and worth the price differential -- although not perfect either.
Make sure you can return them April 3, 2008 3 out of 6 found this review helpful
Purchased sony SSF-6000 speakers because I like value and they had good ratings and were inexpensive. I was not satisfied and returned them for the upgrade to Polk R60's. The Polks sound much better and now feel I have the "value" speaker I was looking for. If you truly want that "amazing quality" sound, however, you will have to spend much, much more than either Sony or Polk, but I am not that picky and very happy with the Polks.
Audio quality at a low cost! May 25, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
First, if you are an "audiophile" these speakers are not for you. Go spend a couple of grand for "name" speakers, renew your subscription to the "New Yorker", and have a $7.00 latte at Star$$$. But if you love music and want speakers that will deliver rather than impress those who live by designer labels, these are the speakers you want.
I bought these about three months ago--and love the heck out of them. My tastes in music are eclectic running from Mozart to Mingus to MC5-- everything in between. Since these speakers arrived, I've played the whole musical spectrum through them and have been pleased beyond words with the sound.
Personally, I might be tone deaf, but I didn't find the bass to be overbearing at all, but then I suppose it's all a matter of personal taste. And you can always adjust the bass setting (which I do for each recording I play anyway) on your amp.
My mother had this saying about snobbery, "If you walk around with your nose in the air, you never see the dollar lying on the ground."
That sort of sums it up about the $ value you get from these speakers.
