Couldn't be happier... May 25, 2008 36 out of 39 found this review helpful
Although a novice with the new generation of HDTVs, I purchased this on advice of my installer, who could have sold me anything, and I couldn't be happier.
In layman's terms (the only I can speak) I love the deep colors, the versatility (you can very easily switch viewing modes depending on the room's brightness) and the high refresh rates that make it great for sports (no trailing images of hockey pucks, etc).
Anyway, buy it, be happy, and forget all the high tech junk you've been cramming in your head for the past 6 months while you've been dreaming of the new TV.
Glare Issues August 16, 2008 35 out of 39 found this review helpful
I was excited to have my new LN46A650 delivered today. From what I had read from the reviews and from my other research I had one fear about the TV, reflection from the screen surface. I'm sad to report I am going to be returning my Samsung for a model with a flat/matte finish on the screen.
I was really disappointed when I turned this on. The reflections from the windows were terrible.
My setup has the TV on a wall which is parallel to an exterior wall with (2) 30x60 windows approximately 10 feet away. The glare IMO is unbearable, bad enough that I am willing to pay the return shipping charges. I also see quite a bit of glare from a floor lamp I have in the corner of the room. It surprises me very much that this is not an issue for more people.
I went as far as taking my Westinghouse LCD off the wall in my bedroom and setting it up right next to the Samsung to compare the amount of glare between the two. The cheapy Westinghouse wins hands down. No reflections whatsoever with the Westy, but with the Samsung I can actually see my neighbors house very clearly out the window in the reflection in the screen. The reflections are worse with dark screens, but are still noticeable while watching a baseball game.
The picture is the best I've ever seen, and the "Touch of Red" gives it a classy look, but if you have a worry about windows reflecting on the screen, I would suggest going with a model that does not have the glossy/glass finish screen. If you are building a home theater where reflection is not an issue or if you always watch TV in the dark then this is probably the TV for you. But if reflections in the screen bother you I would think long and hard before buying this TV.
RANDOM SHUT OFF ISSUE FIXED April 4, 2008 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
Just a heads up to anyone owning any size model of the 650 series...
Samsung issued a firmware update, via their website on 4/3/08, that fixes the random shut off problem. You will need a USB flash drive to apply the update via the Wiselink USB port on the TV. This firmware update also enhances the AMP effect on all sets.
Problem Fixed! April 16, 2008 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
Just as an FYI, Samsung has issued a firmware update that is available via their home website that fixes the off/on issue mentioned in another review. I have been using this TV for over two weeks now, since the update which was released on 4/9/08, I have had ZERO issues with this unit. The picture is FANTASTIC, probably the most clear HDTV that I have seen on the market to date. The 120 Hz makes the biggest difference of all. Don't get me wrong, I have been a faithful fan of SONY for years and I never thought anyone would be able to match the performance of their HDTV products or steer me away from being a faithful customer. My brother even purchased the XBR5 series of the 46 inch and is NOW looking to sell it so that he can switch to the Samsung LN46A650. 2 years ago there would have been no choice for me between the two, but now I can see that Samsung is finally giving Sony a run for their money. Hands down, for now anyway, Samsung is clearly the best choice to go with when it comes to an LCD HDTV of this size.
Amazon and Samsung service is terrible. July 13, 2008 19 out of 41 found this review helpful
On June 12, I ordered the Samsung LN46A650 from Amazon. Amazon farmed the order out to Adorama and I received the TV on June 20 with no shipping crate damage; HOWEVER, the product was an out-of-crate failure. About 1/3 of the screen was black in a irregular pattern. On June 21, Samsung wsa called, and on Monday, June 23 Adorama and Amazon were called and a replacement was requested. Nothing happened until July 2, when a Samsung contracted repair shop picked up the TV. As of July 13, I still have no TV and no one has offered to replace the defective set.
Interestingly, the Samsung work order gave a purchase date of 5/31, which leads me to believe that I was knowingly shipped a defective set that a previous customer had purchased on 5/31 and returned to Adorama. I can not recommend this TV because of the extremely poor service from Samsung, Amazon, and Adorama.
