2 out of 5 stars what a rip off...   October 23, 2007

It pains me to write this review and I hope I am wrong, but I am so disappointed by this TV. I've had an older 40 inch Samsung LCD flat screen for a little over a yr and I loved that TV. Loved it so much that I wouldn't buy any other brand when I decided to upgrade. I did a lot of research and made sure to go w/ one w/ 120hz to prevent motion drag and all the other features you look for in buying a TV (i.e. high contrast ratio, etc...). I've had this TV for 2 weeks and it is such a huge let down. I'm hoping that it's just my set-up, but what's even worse is that when I called Samsung to complain that something may be wrong w/ the TV due to huge motion drap and the terrible pixelated picture, the service center they gave me had someone who barely spoke english and they could only schedule an appt from 9-5 during the week, so basically I would have to take a whole day off of work to wait for someone to come and look at my TV. What a joke. Now some positive...Amazon was really good getting the TV to me fast and it was easy to track. On some channels, when nothing is moving, the picture is insane. Maybe it's because I went bigger on the TV that I am noticing the difference but that is no excuse for th motion drap. I watch this TV w/ the 120hz engine shut OFF because it actually makes it worse. If anyone can help me w/ this so all the $ I spent on this doesn't go to waste or I may actually return this TV. So upset.

After significant research and waiting to see the new Sony xbr4 and the Samsung 71 series, I went for the Samsung primarily based on the price differential. I personally thought the edge in picture quality went to the xbr4 but it was significantly more $ and the other info that I had read suggested quality issues with the sony.

The Samsung picture was incredible in my house and I am glad I went for the 52 inch model. Perhaps the picture showed a bit too much green but there are so many minor adjustments that it is difficult to say you are ever finished with your setting changes. I've actually turned off the 120 mhz as it gave a stuttered picture on fast movements (arms, footballs etc) so perhaps on hindsight the 65 would have made more sense...

After two wks or so of light usage a thin blue vertical line appeared from the top of the screen thru the bottom. Needless to say I was not going to deal with that after all of the time and money I had spent. I called in for a warranty call and Samsung sent over (a third party) rep that was amazing polite and was ideal to work with. While setting up the appointment, he told me it was likely a bad panel but wanted to check it out to be sure. When the service rep arrived he took off his shoes to walk in my house! It was a pleasure to work with this kind of customer service!

Low and behold my panel is bad so the rep indicated they might either send a new panel (which is on backorder) or give me a new set but that it was in Samsungs hands. After a wk I called Samsung customer service who in my opinion seemed annoyed to even speak with me. After the awesome service I received from the third party company I guess my expectations were set and subsequently let down. Samsung customer service indicated that the service rep had no right to tell me anything about the next steps as Samsung decides that... I was like - what is going on! I just want my TV to function!!

The previous reviews and postings always complained about Sony's service and quality issues which was a big reason I didn't buy their product but not I am not so sure... Hopefully I will not regret my decision to skip Sony over Samsung!

The jury is still out depending on how this gets resolved. I'll try to repost with more news.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THIS TELEVISION   December 15, 2007

I recently purchased a playstation 3, and needed a high-definition TV to use with it. I spent a lot of time and energy researching all of the options. Basically, when actually looking at the televisions in the stores I was happiest with the plasmas and LCD's, and wanted the option of mounting the television at some point on the wall, so I went with flat panel.

Once that decision was made, the LCD's just had a lot more pop when placed next to the plasmas in the store (backlight makes the pixels brighter as opposed to plasmas, where each pixel must produce its own light). Most of the LCD's out there are pretty nice, and with the higher end models from the more popular manufacturers (Sony, Samsung, Sharp, etc..) the performance was pretty similar.

At first I thought the 120 Hz was gimmicky and there was no way I was going to spend extra money on it.. until I saw it in action in Fry's. They had a Blu Ray movie playing with the 120 Hz set to "high" and I was floored by what I saw.. the movie didn't even look like a movie anymore, it was sort of "3D-ish" like you were right there.

After deciding to front the extra money for the 120 Hz, I thought the best options were the Sony Bravia XBR4 and the Samsung 5271. With the Samsung's, I could tell a slight difference in black level accuracy from the LED backlight 5281F but I am not a big freak about really dark black levels. If you are, I would take a good look at the 81F series. Anyway, I thought the Sony's picture was maybe a little better than the 5271 side by side, but certainly not enough to justify the extra $1000, and I found the Sony's floating glass bezel kinda disgusting. After the 5271 dropped to $2900 on Amazon I pulled the trigger right away.

I was reluctant to buy a television online at all, but the price was so much better and the reviews for amazon were really good, so I went for it. Eagle sent me an email and called me to set up a delivery time. They were accomodating and basically were able to come any time (during the week) that I wanted, until 4 PM. This is good to remember because if you work 9-5 you will need to take at least a half day off work to get the delivery. The delivery guys showed up right when I expected them, opened the box and set the TV up right in my apartment, the guy even did the on screen set up for me. The TV was perfect and they gladly took away the packing materials.

In short, I have been absolutely thrilled with the entire experience. Right after I bought the TV, the price dropped again on Amazon and I emailed them about the price guarantee and they IMMEDIATELY refunded $130 to my account.. amazing.

The TV's performance has been outstanding. To be honest, you don't notice the 120 Hz on sports or other television programs, including the HD channels, but it really shines with high def DVD's. I put in "300" on blu ray and was in awe. I also put in my standard-def "saving private ryan" and "Shrek" and could tell a huge difference with them as well.

There is some sort of weird distortion around the people in some of my standard def movies like "Braveheart", i'm not sure why, but i turn the 120 Hz off for that movie and it goes away (it is very easy to turn it on and off, and it has three different settings). I have also noticed that "three ball" artifact that the other guy was talking about with a fast-moving football in flight. This even happens when the 120 is off, so i don't know why it does this but honestly i don't notice it unless i'm looking for it.

The TV is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING with PS3 games, and I have been very pleased with the gaming performance.

Overall, I would highly recommend this TV to anyone looking for an HD flat panel, and if you think the 120 Hz is gimmicky, just watch a high-def action movie in the store with it on and you will see how cool it is. I think the XBR4 is probably a little bit better TV overall, but NOT enough to justify the price difference. Also, I do think the black levels are a little more accurate with the Samsung 81F series, but not a huge difference and it is a good bit more expensive. I would also recommend amazon.com for the purchase (maybe not the other vendors selling through amazon though..)

A little tip about size.. I have a very small (900 sq. foot) apartment and bought a 52" TV, and worried that it was way too big. (I wanted a TV big enough to put in a large living room when i get a house) At first it seemed excessively large but after about a week I guess my eyes adjusted to it because it no longer seems large at all, and sometimes (amazingly) I actually wish it was a little bigger. Be careful about going smaller than 50" if you are planning on having this in a living room, you'll be happy with the extra size.

I was really excited to buy this TV as it had all the specs I was looking for. The picture quality was great but the upconversion from the Oppo 80 did not play well at 1080p (60hz). The 1080i played well. Most disappointing, however, was the fact that after 10 days I noticed a spot on the screen which seemed like a dead pixel. I was hoping that it was something else, but it was not. The "contamination" started spreading and I now have a full vertical line of dead pixel across the the screen. I have already informed Amazon that I would be returning the unit. After some initial hesitation, they agreed. I think I just got a bad piece. Has anyone else had this problem?

The picture in terms of colors, contrast and sharpness is the best I've seen anywhere at any price. I just hooked up my blu-ray player (a PS3) to it and let me say that even regular DVD's look much better than I could have anticipated. Watched a football game in HD and it was like having a box seat at the stadium. I felt like I was right there. PS3 games look absolutely stunning. Amazon delivery via Eagle was very smooth and I had the TV within 1 week of my order. Additionally, the price dropped by $200 from the time I bought it and Amazon promptly refunded the difference with a 5 minute call to customer service. This TV simply blows the competition out of the water. I could not be happier with this product.
