Out of this world December 5, 2007 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
So I finally got the tv at the price I wanted from Amazon. It came early, within a week (order placement 11-20: Delivery 11-26). I had it installed and used the supplied remote control to make the intitial settings using the supplied booklet. I connected by Toshiba HD A35 DVD player and inserted Planet Earth.
My wife daughter and I watched and we were stunned. The clarity, the precision of the sceneries were breath taking. I used the flat HDMI 1.3B cable, 4 meters in length. I connected my cable box to the tv using the component vidoe cable and watched Comcast On Demand HD Gallery Player. Again, WOW factor.
So here are my ratings. Sound Quality: Na- None as I use my audio-vidoe amplifier for sound.
Picture Quality: 9.5/10-Excellent when used with true HD source but with some caution. There are different settings for the picture size and based on the setting the picture quality may suffer. I discovered that even though a cable broadcast is in HD, the video source is not necessarily in HD and this was reflected in the picture quality (no fault of the tv). Based on the picture setting, you can get lines at the top and bottom of the screen. There is a setting " Just Scan" that is suppose to automatically select the best picture size, that only makes the picture quality worse when the video source is not true HD. Once I have a true HD video source (HD DVD playing or some broadcast channels)the picture sizing works well.
Set up and Configuration Simplicity: 7/10- Better than average. What is lackking. It would be good to provide guidelines on the preferred selections. I know there are personal tastes, but it would be good for Samsung to recommend a best setting or provide the means for the unit to automatically default to the most desirable settings. However I must insist some guidance as to what each setting means is very usable.
Remote Control: 7/10- Average; It was a pain to program other devices. In fact I was not able to program any of the devices successfully. Since these are common models (Toshiba DVD player, Magnavox cable box) I would certainly expect the codes to work. The actual programming was made more difficult by having to use a sharp pointed object to insert in hole cotaining Set button ( really a small opening or hole) unlike the other buttons that are elevated or raised and can easily be pushed.
In closing this is the best HD 1080P television I ever watched. I researched long and hard before deciding on this one. I went to several Best Buys and watched side by side comparisons, (Sharp and Sony) and the quality of the picture was the best on the Samsung. This was the only one with a contrast ration 25000 to 1, where as the others were 10,000 to 1. This is important to view shades of black, especially on clothing. The 120 Hz refresh rate was a plus. Yes there are much cheaper 1080 P 52 inch models out there, but I go for high quality snd am willing to pay for it. ( I win out in the long run)
Desired Features: It would have been good if the unit was internet ready or internet-enabled or better yet have a wireless internet capability (Sony and HP units now offer this feature and this is the way of the future)
There are still more features for me to try out (pc hook up, showing photos via the USB port etc.).
Pricing: Amazon dropped the price to $2650 on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and having paid $2799.99 on 11-20, they refunded the difference. It is back at $2799. Plus I did not have to pay for shipping or tax and the delivery guys placed it exactly on the stand where I wanted it. Now that was service. (Great work Amazon) Best Buy, Circuit City are not even close.
Overall Score: 9/10
I hope you find this review helpful and informative.
Beautiful Picture at a Great Price!!! November 16, 2007 22 out of 22 found this review helpful
The picture is beautiful --- even with SD (standard definition) and normal DVDs. Frankly, because of this, I could care less about having HDTV or Blu-rays. I have my PS3 (HDMI), Wii (RCA), media center (PC), and cable line (coaxial) plugged into it. All four look great!!! As you can see, I use it for gaming (PC, Wii, PS3 --- all with no lag!), DVD movies (via PS3) and TV/ DVR recordings.
For months, I was going to get the Sony XBR 52" LCD, but then I saw this one, and I bought it in a BLINK of an eye. And you can't lose if you buy it here on Amazon: great delivery service, 30-day price guarantee, and in most places, there are no shipping or tax fees (this alone will save you a bundle). This is by far the biggest and most expensive purchase I've ever made here on Amazon, and it was PAINLESS! :)
The real deal.... September 25, 2007 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
I'm not going to say anything about the tech side of this tv... you can hear that anywhere. I bought it from Amazon.com... a thousand bucks cheaper than anywhere local. Amazon.com service was great.. it was my first purchase from them.. and i couldn't be happier with their service. I got cold feet after i ordered it (samsung lnt5271) and the next day wanted to cancel the order and order a lnt 4671 (to save about a thousand bucks)..... no problem... they understood and helped me through it. The next day ... i saw the 52 in a store and could not resist it.. called them back and changed the order back to the 5271... they understood.. were very helpful...and no problem. In about 5 days the televisoin was hand carried into my den .. taken out of the box and set on the stand by their delievery personal.... great job! Now i'll answer a few questions i had about the TV.. No its not to big... i'm so glad i got the 52! Yes the picture is awesome... i'm so glad i got the 52! I'm am completely over my buyers remorse... i'm so glad i got the 52! No.. the shinny screen is no problem... had i not read about it in one of the forums..i would have never known it was a problem... i'm so glad i got the 52! Am i a happy camper... you bet i am.. i'm so glad i got the 52! Would i buy this tv again or recommend it to family and friends.. you bet i would..!!! I immediately bought a PS3 to go along with it... great choice (i think) but this is about the TV... !! if your on the fence about this TV.. go ahead and jump!!! on the side of the samsung LNT5271...you will not be disapointed!!!!
Wish I could change this to ZERO STARS... December 20, 2007 21 out of 24 found this review helpful
I wish I could post an enthusiastic review here, as my first impressions of this set were astounding - but after getting 4 patches of dead pixels on the screen within the first 24 hours, I am going to be shipping this one back.
FOLLOW-UP 1/2/2008
At Amazon/Target's suggestion, I contacted Samsung instead, for warrantee repair. This has turned out to be a BIG mistake.
The set was picked up 5 days after contacting Samsung. After another 4 days, I was told by the service center that my set "probably" will be ready by... next week! So at MINIMUM, I will have to wait another 5 days... meaning that at best, TWO WEEKS will have elapsed from the time I reported the problem to when I have a working TV again.
Amazon, this is JUST PLAIN RIDICULOUS!!!
To all the other buyers reporting dead pixels on their brand-new Samsung HDTV's, if Amazon asks you to contact Samsung rather than return the set to them, don't be a fool like I was! Return it to them - it should be THEIR PROBLEM, not yours.
SECOND FOLLOW-UP 1/15/2008
Phone SAMSUNG'S service shop last week, they told me they hadn't received the replacement panel YET (over 2 weeks after I reported the dead pixels!!!)
They said they "should" receive the panel by the next day, and repairs and checkout would take another day or two. Meaning it would be ready by Saturday...
Here it is, TUESDAY of the following week, and it STILL ISN'T READY.
SAMSUNG, THIS IS INEXCUSABLE!!!
Glare no problem....120hz is questionable but I still love this TV December 31, 2007 21 out of 22 found this review helpful
I agonized over this tv for weeks. I kept going back and forth between it and the Sony XBR4 52", which was approximately $1K more expensive. My biggest concerns were the reported glare with this set, but ultimately decided to take the risk and go for it (couldn't really afford the extra just to worry about glare).
I am very glad I did. This set is beautiful. It's been out of the box for 5 days, and I can honestly say I tear up a bit when a football game comes on. The color looks much better than the XBR4 did (at least at the Circuit City display). The glare is not really a problem at all. Now, this is coming from 6 years on a 27" crt, so anything is going to look awesome. But, the shine on the screen is no worse than the crt we had, and no worse than my father-in-law's plasma. I really don't notice it at all unless I look for it, or unless the screen goes dark for a moment. Most of the time the screen is bright enough to shine right through it. This is in a room with quite a few windows, including one directly across from the TV. Granted, the room is big and big enough to have some shade regardless of windows, but really, it's been a non-issue.
I can't guarantee it'll be the same for you, but I can tell you that for me, all the hand wringing over glare was for naught. Perhaps I'm not as much of a videophile purist as some, but I just don't see what the worry is for.
The picture is beautiful...the built-in speakers are perfectly adequate for us (actually sound pretty good). The only thing I've noticed is the motion blur that occurs with 120hz processing on. This is a shame because I bought the set to avoid ghosting via 120hz. I haven't tried the firmware upgrade...suppose I'll get to that one day.
The good news is, though, that I can't notice any ghosting anyway. I've looked for it, but I simply don't see it. I bought a PS3 along with the TV, and Motorstorm looks spectacular. No blurriness, just resolution that makes you feel like you're in the game. And this isn't even in Game mode?!?
Bottom line...I love this TV. Sure, I would've loved just about any big tv after years with a 27" crt, but this thing is beautiful and although it has a few issues, they're hardly worth worrying about. I truly am enjoying it!
