Great HDTV! July 8, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have had the TH-50PZ85U for several days at this writing. I purchased it based on seeing a live unit, and because of favorable reviews here and on the AudioVisual forum. It is connected to an Onkyo TX-SR606 receiver which also came from Amazon, all with HDMI cables. I have a new Sony DVP-NS77H DVD player, and the upconversion thru the system is outstanding. I see no need for BlueRay until it gets much less expensive. I previously had a Toshiba rear projection HD that only lasted 6 years, so this is my first experience with Plasma. I am completely satisfied. The 50PZ85U does put out some heat, but I had read about this. Setup was okay, I am fairly technical, but I had to read the documentation carefully several times. The forums mention a 100 hr "breakin" time, but I see no mention of this in the Owners Manual. I am treating it carefully in any event. The picture settings published in the forum were right on the mark for my eye, although the out of the box picture wasn't too bad. I purchased thru Amazon even though others were slightly lower priced, and sure nuff, Amazon has already credited me for a nifty price decrease. The White Glove delivery was excellent, delivered much quicker than shipping email estimated. I highly recommend this Panny, and the same for the Onkyo.
Amazing service from Amazon.com July 23, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I purchased this TV after reading the reviews and comparing several in the same price range at a local store. I purchased it through Amazon.com with their free shipping and white glove treatment. I was told that it would be a couple of weeks before delivery yet I was contacted within a few days by the shipping company and the TV was delivered less than a week after I ordered it. The white glove treatment was fantastic. They brought the TV into the house, unboxed it, and hooked it up to make sure everything was working. They also offered to take all the packing materials with them. When I ordered the TV, I thought I had got an incredible deal and ordered when the price was the lowest I had seen in a month. Immediately after I ordered, the price went up slightly and then started dropping. I would check the price daily and whenever I saw it was less than I paid, I would contact Amazon customer support and they would refund me the difference under their 30-day post purchase price guarantee. I have now had the TV for a month and the picture still blows me away. With the 30-day post purchase price guarantee, I have been refunded $111. So not only have I been able to enjoy an amazing TV for the past month, I have been making money while doing so. Overall, I would give both the TV and Amazon.com's white-glove treatment, free shipping and prompt delivery, and 30-day post purchase price guarantee 5-stars!!!

I purchased this as a gift for someone and they cannot stop raving about it. The TV is fantastic, and with an HDMI cable and a great surround sound system, this system will delight you..I loved the Pioneer Elite and took a chance with this, so I'm glad I did!
Fantastic TV, but hell getting it. June 10, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I recently received my TH-50PZ85U from Amazon using their White Glove Delivery service (we'll get to that in a minute). The TV is phenomenal so far. I'm still in the recommended "break-in" period, so I haven't fully calibrated my settings, but even still, it looks great. Nice deep blacks and vivid color - looks awesome on my HD-DVD player (yeah, I know), and my Xbox 360.
The TV itself doesn't have as many picture settings to tweak as other TVs, but I find that not being a huge technophile, the settings it does have work just fine for me. You can also check out www.avsforum.com for some calibration advice - but I'd recommend using your eyes. The motion is fantastic - I haven't seen any motion blur while playing Ninja Gaiden 2 (a very fast moving game, which I ALSO had a problem with from Amazon - delayed another 4 days). Also, NG2 does have a static display image nearly the entire time you're playing, and I haven't seen any image retention as of yet. Granted, I made sure to take breaks in between playing and such, but I've put about 10 hours on the game with no IR yet. I don't think it should prove a problem.
The glare on the TV I can see being an issue for some people. I previously had a CRT in this room, which suffered from minor glare (I have one window on the wall adjacent to the TV), and the Panasonic suffers from the same glare. Like others say, when the TVs off (or a really dark scene) you can see yourself in it, and the glare from direct light does show up, but ambient light would work just fine with little to no glare. It's not a major issue, at least for me.
Now, as for Amazon...I've never had an issue with Amazon before, but this particular order was a complete nightmare for me. Granted, some of it was probably just a technical hiccup on their part, but, long story short, my credit card was charged 16 times for the TV, causing the card to be frozen (for 5 days) and my order canceled. After speaking with 2 people from my bank and 4 people from Amazon, I eventually just had to wait until the charge cleared and reorder the TV. So, aside from having to wait about 6 days to reorder the TV, I had a problem with this so-called white glove delivery. The order came very quickly (3 days - but that should be expected considering it shipped out of Dallas and into Austin - a 3.5 hour drive), but when the guys showed up with the TV, they brought the box inside my apartment, took the top off, and said "Here ya go, sign here, goodbye." They didn't take the TV out, they let me inspect the top of the TV for physical damage, and they did not take the packaging with them. When I asked them about it, they just told me to call the number on the work order if there was a problem with the TV, and they went on their way. So then I had to wait another day until I could get a friend to come help my get the TV out of the box and up on the stand.
Overall, it was a painful experience, but in the end it got done - and now I'm watching a beautiful 50" TV with no issue.
Price Jump June 12, 2008 3 out of 47 found this review helpful
I haven't bought the TV yet, but probably will within the next 6 weeks or so, and perhaps not at Amazon. I am very disappointed that Amazon has seen fit over the last few days to RAISE their price by $100 (>5%) when electronics generaly come down in price after the unit has been available for a period of time. I find it insulting that they are greedy to the point of taking advantage of apparent increased interest in the product. Aren't we being screwed enough by the price of gas?
