Fantastic Plasma TV at a fantastic price April 2, 2008 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I am very happy with this product, not only was it much cheaper purchasing it via Amazon but shipping was included. The picture is incredible and the options on the display are fantastic. I am using this with a PS3 for games and Blue Ray as well as a Xbox 360. You cannot beat this price for a 50" Plasma at this caliber. Thanks Panasonic and Thank you Amazon!
Panasonic has a winner April 24, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I received my 50 PZ85U yesterday . Purchased it on late 3 days ago and it was with me at 12pm yesterday. i loved the shipping speed. The set was handled perfectly by CEVA and i dont have any green areas or dead pixels so far. I used some standard settings floating around in avsforum and i loved it. I dont want to break in with the dvd so i was watching on demand content which was free. I have run it about 10 hours now.
Cliffhanger looked a little bit dull as compared to my previous Sharp Aquos D64U. It may have something to do with the brightness level being low. But otherwise the picture was just brilliant. I loved the black levels and now i understand what everyone was talking about. cliffhanger has some scenes which i have never observed before, but because of the black level , it improved the overall experience.
I also watched 16 blocks (HD) and ICE AGE 2. I have seen the older generation of plasmas in the stores and somehow their whites were not as white as this set. Their whites where more blue but this set had nice whites. I loved the music channel in HD but i cant watch that just yet because it has huge logo. I briefly connected my Wii and i must say it looked a lot crisper on the Sharp Aquos but i have not played around with the settings. I am confident that i will be able to fix that after break in. I am still using composite video. I had a sharp for close to 2 months. i am very happy with my decision of returning that and jumping over to plasma. In a home setting i dont think the brights of the lcd make much of a difference.
With respect to reflection, i did see some reflection but with picture on i didnt see it once in 10 hours. I had a huge window 2 feet away from the tv at a 90 degree angle. At some level, if you pay enough attention you might see some of the background detail in the set but it was nothing close to what i saw at BB. Compared to my sharp i believe the sharp was obviously better but i dont think the sharp will compare to this set when it comes to picture. I think panasonic did a good job with the coating. Coming from the sharp thread where people believe that non uniform back lighting is inherent to technology and that you have to live with it .. etc etc.. i felt relieved after i popped in my tv blink dvd and observed absolutely uniform grayscale images.
So far i am loving this set. I think i stand by my decision to return the Sharp and also very satisfied that i didnt go for the Sammy 71 series. I watched the playoffs on hd for a few minutes and it looked good. No smearing of the ball and what not.
Update: Having now owned this for more than 4 months, im still a very satisfied customer. I have watched countless HD movies and even SD movies and i have been very happy. The sound is bad but with such a nice tv, you have to get an external sound system. I had left a static image on the tv for over 2 hours. Thankfully my tv was 75 hours through break in and the retention was cleared out in just 30 minutes of regular tv. Great product from panasonic

Amazon.com has the most competitive pricing on the internet plus the free shipping makes it the place to shop not only for me but also for people that i know. The tv arrived sooner than the scheduled date. I have compared this tv with other brand names in the same screen size, and decided it was by far the most bang for the buck. I have the Pioneer Kuro Pdp-6010fd in my living room for the comparision and so far i've got to say the Panasonic came very darn close to the Pioneer. Set up was the easy part. Adjusting it required 1 hour of calibration. I got the color and grey scale came close to the Pio. Based on what i have been able to review so far, i can say that color is very vivid ( i chose to use the movie setting ), black level is more than enough to please those hardcore videophiles. The Pio produces a " theater-like" image and the Panasonic gives me more vivid picture. I have also considered the new Pio 5020fd, but with the low price of Amazon, i was able to save easily $1400 over the Pio, and lived with a picture that i feel good enough to live with. All and all, an extremely quality product that will make people happy if they choose to purchase this tv.
Great TV May 19, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The image really pops on this model, and having an SD slot for photos adds the value of a gigantic digital picture frame. The only issues with that feature are that the playback doesn't give you a lot of options (no fancy transitions, no re-ordering the pics in menu) and it's tough to find big enough pics sometimes with 1920x1080 as the ideal resolution. Also nice is the VGA input... I believe there is a way to use DVI (adapters?) to get a better computer signal, but I haven't gotten to it yet... in any case it's also a great giant computer monitor if you want it to be.
For the TV features, you can't go wrong... not sure I've seen a more colorful/contrast-y image on any TV. Even regular cable signals zoomed in on look great, and the tech really breathes new life into television programs. Amazon had a good sale price when I bought mine so I think it was a fair deal... the only reason I gave four stars rather than five was that I'd like to see the price come down more and have large plasmas become more commonplace, as it's said the true quality of HD/Blu-Ray isn't fulfilled until screen sizes get to be over 50 inches (58 was one figure I read.)
But yes, great tv... I will be using it for a few years as my main one with hopes to get a bigger/better model down the road. This was the best value I could currently find for my price range though, and I'm definitely enjoying it.
Got a defective unit - good luck getting it fixed May 29, 2008 4 out of 14 found this review helpful
Nice TV..... if it worked. Total nightmare dealing with their outsourced customer support and the local repair outfit. Unit had problems right away- two red and green vertical bars in the middle of the display. After replacing one part, the problem came back within 24 hours. Still waiting for another back ordered replacement part. Two weeks with no TV, and countless hours unmounting the defective unit. I will NEVER buy another Panasonic again. Buyer BEWARE!!!!!!!!
