It is a roll of the dice if you buy a plasma TV online June 19, 2008 13 out of 23 found this review helpful
I purchased this plasma after a lot of research because Panasonic is the 2nd best to Pioneer in quality and picture. Pioneer, arguably the top plasma on the market, has decided to stop producing their own plasma and will now buy from the same company that Panasonic gets it's screen.
The online price was great and a made sure that the supplier was Amazon and NOT a 3rd party.
WARNING: Be very careful and look who the seller is. Other than Amazon, most if not all of the 3rd party suppliers that Amazon uses will not let you return the TV if it arrives damaged. Read the return policies very carefully. Most of them will make you keep the TV and get it repaired through an authorized service company.
I was very leary about buying such a fragile and expensive item online, but decided to give it a shot. Shipping took a lot longer than expected. It wasn't really Amazon's fault, it was at the warehouse of the local delivery company for almost a week and they never called me to setup a delivery. The TV was delivered and the delivery men just set the TV inside and got out of the house as soon as they could (which should have given me the first clue that something was wrong). They made me sign a paper that the box is not damaged. Turns out they were supposed to take the TV out of the box and make sure it was working before the left, but they didn't. I opened the box and the plasma screen was completely shattered (the inner plasma tube).
Again, luckily I made sure the supplier was Amazon. I called them up and they were very nice and setup the return with no problems, except it took about 2 weeks for someone to pick it up. Unfortunately they had a 2+ month backorder on the TV so I ended up just getting a refund, although it took several weeks before the credit was on my credit card.
So, in the end I didn't get the TV and it was a lot of hastle. But I have heard others have no problems at all. So, proceed at your own risk.
Buy last years model! April 3, 2008 11 out of 27 found this review helpful
Ok so as a previous reviewer mentioned, the reflections are really bad from both the screen as well as the glossy bezel. So bad that it almost makes the tv unwatchable in anything but pitch black room :-(
The picture on the other hand is great, but I doubt it is *that* much better than last years model or any other tv hundreds of dollars less to compensate for the awful glare/reflection. Sending this back...
4/12/08 EDIT: After continuing to watch this TV for a week deciding whether to keep this or send it back, I put some black posterboard over the side vertical bezel where the glare was bothering me the most. This has helped tremendously. The screen itself is still quite reflective, but a few other changes have helped that as well. I added some ambient light to the side and behind the set where the reflections cannot hit the tv and bounce back to the viewer.
The picture remains flawless and I have not had any pixel or noise issues. Sound is mediocre, and adding bass boost distorts low volume output where someone is speaking softly (I just turned it off).
I would change the rating from a 1 star I originally gave it to a 3 to reflect my continuing experience with the set.
Wait a little longer... April 5, 2008 10 out of 23 found this review helpful
Would consider waiting until Panasonic works out the kinks with manufacturing this new line. Returned four so far for the following reasons:
1) Stuck pixel and smear on the INSIDE of the glass! 2) 11 stuck pixels on the bottom left quadrant of the screen. 3) Imperfections in two areas on the glass that left a haloing effect when you looked at the screen. 4) Sound processor defective making voices sound warped.
None of the above sets had damaged boxes so it probably wasn't damage during transport but rather were manufacturing defects. Maybe I got a bad batch but 4 bad ones in a row sounds like Panasonic doesn't have their quality control in order at the plant that manufacturers the 85u.
great set,,picture modes not great. April 17, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
This is a fantastic buy, having only had it since april 11th. A very speedy delivery(4 business days). You may need help setting it up as it is kinda heavy but more to it is the size...its HUGE!!!!
The out of box settings need to be adjusted asap. You do NOT want to keep this on VIVID mode. Having read every forum and article posted on this set, you need to know that the only setting worth anything is CINEMA.
do not watch anything that does not fill the entire screen for the first 100 hrs. use the zoom or fill function when needed.
www.avsforum.com is a helpful place when and if u have questions.
Panasonic TH-50PZ85U User Review April 22, 2008 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I have owned this display for over 30 days, and decided to provide some feedback. Aesthetically, this is a very nice looking set on the stand. It is fairly simple, and the solid black bezel, stand and speaker look good.
The anti-reflective filter is fairly effective at attenuating in room lighting, and the contrast ratio helps with daytime viewing. For those concerned about reflections, this set is leagues better than a CRT. It may not handle external light like an LCD, but other than rooms with extreme lighting issues, the 85U should be fine.
HD picture quality is pretty much amazing. Blu-ray's played from a PS3 look exceptional, as well as OTA HD. Blacks are very good with detailed shadows. This set does oversaturate Red and Green somewhat, but after adjustments, it is rarely bothersome. One negative though, is the limited adjustments for calibrating the picture. It would have been nice if Panasonic had included more controls, and this is the main reason I rated it 4 instead of 5 star. If you purchase this set, I recommend using the Cinema Mode as it is the most accurate and natural looking. Standard Def sources looks alright, but nothing special.
Gaming has been great on this set as there is no motion blur and image retention has not been an issue. I have played Call of Duty 4 for several hours at a time, and any IR washes away withing seconds or minutes. This set does show phosphor trailing as most plasma's do, but after the first 100+ hours, it is either less prevalent, or I do not notice it as much.
Overall, great set, that could have used better user controls and produced less saturated colors, but for the price I feel it is a good display.
