Pleasantly Surprised June 18, 2007 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
I am very pleasantly surprised with the quality of this unit. I primarily went for the Philips name. Had this unit been from another manufacturer, I don't think I'd have bothered. I'm pleased I gave it a try.
Setup was easy. The speaker connectors are color coded to the jacks on the back of the unit. The control center is low profile and typical width and depth. It doesn't look as good as it performs.
The sound is impressive. From low volume to loud, the bass is solid and highs are crisp. I've set it up with TV sound and am very surprised at how much better regular TV sounds through this system.
For the price, I can't imagine a better system. Especially considering that it's HDTV with the HDMI and component connections.
Good entry Level Surround Sound.... but not great October 1, 2007 19 out of 21 found this review helpful
I bought this system a month ago as my first real surround sound system to go with my new HDTV. While the Video quality and sound related to DVD and the dock are good the lack of an optical Digital in forced me to use regular composite ins for my Satelite and xbox360. This makes any surround sound spotty at best. There is a coaxial digital in, but most devices now use the optical. If your just looking for a simple surround sound system to play your DVDs that is easy to put together and simple to use, this may be the system for you. If you have other things you want to plug in to your system (i.e. your cable/satelite box, or gaming console) find another system. I did.
Great system for a great price!!! May 2, 2007 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I just got it today. Well I must say I`m very impressed by huge ammount of features, like Ipod dock,HDMI Port with 1080i upconversion, playable Divx movies and USB port. This is excelent entry level home theater for a great price comparing to other system avalible on the market today.A very intersting point is that this home theater has an option of firmware upgrade so it's possible to update the software for this home theater when it does become avalible online, which is obviously great and gives an option of improvements and even adding some new features. Don't hesitate to buy If you're looking for an excellent entry level home theater system.
Awesome System August 6, 2007 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
After quite some time doing some research for a decent home theatre system at a great price, I finally decided on this unit. My Mom and Brother both have Phillips Home Theatre-in-a-Box systems that work perfectly. My brother even returned the "so talked about" new Bose surround sound system for a Phillips system. I am a music fanatic and can't go anywhere without my iPod, so the included dock was perfect. I can even watch my downloaded Movies/Music Videos/TV Shows on my television from the dock. The sound is awesome and so far has played all my DVD's.
It does take a little while to switch sources, but hasn't been a problem for me so far.
Great Value for the Money !!! December 11, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
If you are looking for an awesome entry level Home Theater system, look no more! After months of research and reading reviews, I decided to buy it, and got a Black Friday deal (Circuit City online) and just paid $160 + tax (free shipping). And I am so glad I did!
Pros:
It took less than 20 minutes to setup. The sound quality is just astonishing and I like the various sound options (Movies, Music, Sports, Video Game etc.). You have the option to toggle between surround sound mode and stereo audio mode. Also, you can adjust the relative volume of each speaker (including the subwoofer) to your expected performance level. Initially, the rear speakers were not as loud as I had wanted them to be, so I just used this feature to shift more volume to the rear speakers compared to the front SIDE speakers, and increased the subwoofer volume by just one point, and I was in heaven. I have been watching movies like Transformers, Live free or Die Hard and Black Hawk Down in my huge Downtown apartment living room (Victorian Style Building with high-ceiling, built in 1852) at volume level 20 (maximum is 40), and the entire apartment complex starts shaking whenever there is an action scene. The sound is clear and you can hear every drop of blood dripping in the ground or the remote sound of a chopper flying somewhere, in surround sound!!
I also play my CD's and MP3's and listen to the FM/AM radio (built-in) using this system and it delivers wonderful sound just as expected.
Potential Con's:
As far as the speaker wire goes, the wire is pretty long and it should not be too difficult to mount the rear speakers at the rear in a medium-sized room (I took them directly through under my carpet, so I did not even have to use one-quarter of the length of the wire). However, people who have really large living rooms and no carpeting might find it frustrating, especially since the wires are inserted directly into the speakers and there is no way of changing/replacing them without opening up the speakers and tearing off the original wire connection with the speakers. For the same reason, people who like to replace thin wires with their choice of thick wires will probably not be satisfied with this system.
The loading tray is very thin and appears flimsy, so just be careful when putting / taking out DVD's so that you don't break it by accident. The loading time for DVD's / CD's is a little long which can be a bit annoying at times, but then again, this is not really a technical "problem", this is just a limitation of an entry-level system, and you should not complain about it, especially at this price!
I do not have an ipod so I never had to hook up the ipod dock, and I have not used the HD upconverting feature either since I do own a HDTV yet. Also, it does not have the fancy features like Sirius Satellite Radio, Blu-ray DVD playing capability and other features that the newest models (as of now) have, but then again, you would pay 5 times as much or more to buy the latest model home theater system!!
Overall, as you have probably guessed by now, I am extremely happy with my investment and if you are looking for a great Home Theater System in a box for similar uses as mine (as outlined above), I can assert confidently that this is the system for you.
