5 out of 5 stars Happy with the product...   May 4, 2008

The screen resolution is very good. I have played DVDs, VCDs, music CDs and am glad of the choice I made.

4 out of 5 stars A definite improvement from Sony's previous portable dvd player.   May 14, 2008

I owned the DVP-FX810. That was not the greatest player - the viewing angle was extremely limited, discs often didn't load content properly, the sound from the little speakers was weak. Thankfully, all that has been corrected with this new player. The best thing is undoubtedly the image quality. On the old player, the screen had to carefully be positioned for a decent image. Not so with this one. The screen on this edition looks more "LCD-like", that is, more like what you'd expect in a much larger set. It hasn't rejected or failed to load any dvd I've put in it yet. It does not have the A-B repeat like the old player, but you may or may not care about that. One thing that did alarm me: while a dvd was playing and I pressed the "Options" button on the player, I would notice a lag in audio / video synchronization when I returned from the Options menu back to regular playback (it was back to normal after pressing pause, then play again). The audio is louder, and a little better. The remote is smaller than the older player as well (as are the buttons). I definitely recommend this as a replacement for the FX810. It's worth the upgrade for image quality alone.

5 out of 5 stars Just got, great display   May 20, 2008

I just got this unit using my Sony Rewards points. I popped Bee Movie in for my son and the resolution just blew me away. I have a 60" Sony with Blu-Ray and I would rank this unit right up there with that combo. I bought a Case Logic seatback case from Walmart for my son, but the jury is still out on that one as it doesn't really work the way the picture shows.

5 out of 5 stars Blown Away by High Definition   May 28, 2008

According to the Wikipedia write-up on portable DVD players (PDPs), the standard definition PDPs is 480x234. This makes the FX820's 800x480 resolution "high-def" by PDP standard. Indeed, that's 3.4 times as much resolution and you can definitely tell the difference on every DVD you play.

I bought the player (this red one) after reading all the helpful reviews for the black version. (Thanks, guys!) The FX820 feels a bit heavy to me, but otherwise is the "perfect" PDP! The screen is gorgeous, the two headphone jacks are convenient, and the controls are easy to use. The battery life has not disappointed at all; I set the brightness at half and get at least 5 hours out of each charge. I simply cannot be happier.

If you're patient you can find this player at new for $160 or even $150, but even at the list price of $179, I think it's a great buy. I used to own a cheap PDP but it was a pain to use and poor quality. I'm so glad I upgraded to this Sony player. My family will have lots of on-the-go fun for years to come.

BTW, you can see more reviews on the product page for the black version: Sony DVP-FX820 8" Portable DVD Player Black.

5 out of 5 stars What Separates this Unit from Others   June 6, 2008

Rather than rehash everything others have said, in my opinion, these qualities separate this unit from others:

1. Build Quality-Excellent
2. Picture-the best I have seen in a portable-highest resolution, sharpness
3. Battery life-excellent-more than 4 hours-battery is large, but very thin and does not add a great deal of bulk
4. Controls are located on the screen, rather than having to reach around the screen to operate while in a "twisted' mode, in my opinion, its strongest characteristic
5. A bit heavier than most
6. SONY makes reliable stuff

Radio Shack sells a big for $12 which is perfect for this unit...Nothing fits into the bag except the unit....great for air travel....put your accessories into your suitcase and board the plane lighter

That's about it.
