After Many Tries, Still Doesn't Work September 23, 2008 26 out of 27 found this review helpful
I've had this Samsung DVD-VR375 for about 3 weeks now. I give up and will be returning it!
To clarify, my reason for buying a VCR/DVD burner was very simple: I wanted to convert my old VHS tapes to DVDs that would be able to be played in OTHER machines, not just this Samsung unit.
Here's the problem with this Samsung unit: Every DVD I have burned so far has sound-sync problems. The sound is off by a few seconds. If you fast-forward or chapter-search, then the sound goes REALLY off and the DVD is unwatchable because of this.
I have tested my newly-burnt DVDs on two players in my home: My iMac computer DVD player, and my Sony DVD player, which is hooked up to my TV. Both players give me the same problem: the sound is out of sync.
I have tried every imaginable iteration of dubbing on this machine to see if I could produce ONE USABLE DVD ... to no avail. I have used DVD-R, DVD+R, and DVD-RW discs. All produce the same sound problems. I have used the "Simple dub" option as well as the EZ Dub button on the front of the machine ... same problems.
The instruction manual is really poorly written. I'm a pretty smart "techie" guy, and it's still confusing.
So, I cannot recommend this DVD/VCR -- especially if you're buying it to convert your old VHS tapes. I'm returning this one and either buying a different brand, or sending my old tapes to a conversion company who'll do it right.
A fine working machine June 20, 2008 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
Everything seems to be working fine as I transfer VCR tapes to DVD discs, or simply play VCRs or DVDs. I was frustrated at first after transferring VCRs to DVDs to find that they would not play on another DVD machine, until I realized that there is another step necessary after recording, namely, to go back into the onscreen menu, and "finalize the disc."
Perfect to preserve those once in a lifetime memories July 28, 2008 21 out of 23 found this review helpful
I bought this primarily to preserve home movies I have of my family, mainly my brother who passed away last year. I spent most of my time this past weekend copying VHS to DVD for myself, mom and my younger brother. I have watched one of the DVD's and the quality is much better than the video it came from. It was also so easy I could not believe it. Just a few steps and I was on my way to copying a large video library. If you have home movies you want to preserve this is perfect and was so easy. Even for someone who usually cannot work the electronics without help. I would recommend this for any parent who does not want to lose those precious memories of their children.
better than the 357, but dvd player can't stand the temp May 20, 2008 19 out of 26 found this review helpful
i'm happier with this model than the 357 because in that one if you were taping something with the vcr and watching a dvd the timer recorder would show an info bar while you were watching the movie. in this one it doesn't do that. with the 375 you can also use your component connections to get a better picture than my tv shows. I haven't tried dvd recording because i haven't checked the dvd-r(s) i have. i don't want it ruined by the wrong type.
in august(3 months of use) it stopped being able to play dvds from blockbuster, then it stopped playing my owned dvds. i got a lens cleaning disc and got the use of my own dvds but it still won't work for my blockbuster or netflix dvds. cd playing and vcr still works, but now i have to use my old combo unit (working dvd broken vcr) to play dvds. this dvd player can not deal with temperatures (hot or cold) my old cheap one can. they just don't know how to make something that works in the real world.
I'd change my rating to 2 stars but the review page won't let me.
Quite Nice for the Price... June 19, 2008 18 out of 23 found this review helpful
I jumped too soon. Well, HDTV-wise that is. I went ahead and picked up a 1080i plasma HDTV (love it) early, when they had their first price drop. Little did I know that 1080p would be the thing. Well, now I was faced with a choice: try and fit my massive TV in my bedroom while simultaneously talking my wife into a new 1080p set, a new amplifier / receiver, and a new Blu-Ray or hybrid deck or try the much less painful route of making due with what we have. I chose the latter.
It didn't turn out too bad.
This unit allows me to get some really decent performance out of my aging DVD collection, without even lusting too badly after Blu Ray or HDDVD's. The audio performance with the coaxial cable is great for my older Onkyo receiver, and I do great with DTS and Dolby Digital. Of course, I am not quite "HD audio" ready either, but with my nice Polk speakers, I can blow that off for a while. In case you were wondering, the VCR deck upconverts to 1080i (or 1080p I suppose) as well and not just the DVD deck. I have not used any of the recording or dubbing features. Setup was great, and my Logitech Harmony remote was easily programmed with all the settings for the remote that came with the deck. Overall, I was much impressed with the quality of the product, the upconversion looking pretty good at a distance, while strangely blurred at times up close, which might be expected. For the price, you can't beat the upgrade, if you are still at 480p...
