2 out of 5 stars A Fatal Flaw Which Dooms It To Oblivion   August 18, 2008
11 out of 26 found this review helpful

This is an otherwise satisfactory and workable DVD Recorder/Player, with all the features you'd expect in such a machine, including the HDTV tuner, which is the primary reason why I bought it. Granted, the price was right ($166 on Amazon vs. $229 on the Toshiba website), but you certainly get what you pay for. It has two main flaws, one of which is an annoyance, and the other, in my opinion, is fatal. The annoying flaw is the remote control. The button descriptions are very hard to read, and it's made with the cheapest plastic.

The fatal flaw is its Timer Recording. If you want to pre-record programs, the last step in so doing is to turn the machine off. Quoting from the Owner's Manual, "Timer recording will not work when the power is on". What genius programmed this idiocy? In other words, if you're watching the TV where the Toshiba unit is attached, and you want to set up some pre-recorded programs for tomorrow, you must turn off the Recorder until the programs have recorded. In my situation, I'm using the Toshiba as a digital tuner for a Sony tube TV, and this flaw means that I cannot watch the set until the timed programs have recorded. Unbelievable.

It's no wonder that Toshiba has discontinued their DVD Recorder/Player line.

Note: I have subsequently discovered that I can turn off the Toshiba just prior to the recording time, but leave the TV set on. When the Toshiba starts recording, the channel(s) selected appear on the TV set. However, during the recording time, you cannot change channels. When the recording is completed, the Toshiba turns off. Therefore, in fairness to Toshiba, I am upgrading my rating to two and a half stars instead of just two stars.

5 out of 5 stars Toshiba DR560 DVD Recorder   June 4, 2008

The recorder has been used to timer record daily hdtv. The atsc/qam tuner performed flawlessly using both off air antenna and cable tv hookups. I have tested all input/output configurations and all have performed as specified. This unit has been in use daily for one month. It is the third dvdr that I have owned and is by far the best. I am extremely pleased with this product.

5 out of 5 stars Good Purchase   September 9, 2008

Of all the DVD type electrical equipment I own the DR-560 is my favorite. It does a fine job of recording and is easy (that I'm able to do it is all the proof you need). I like the playback on DVD's, the picture is very good and the resume function works after the player is turned off and turned back on. What impressed me the most was the improved TV reception with the DR-560 digital tuner, I have one on my TV but the 560 tuner made quite a difference. I would recommend this product, it's quality and price make it a good buy.

2 out of 5 stars OK, except...   May 14, 2008

The Toshiba DR560 is OK but the remote is worthless. Key identity, printed on the body of the remote, is almost unreadable unless you hold it just right in a bright light. I contacted Toshiba who said that there was nothing wrong with my remote and all remotes had the same, almost invisbile, key i.d.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!!!   May 19, 2008

I bought this DVD recorder/player to upgrade my Panasonic model. Since this recorder comes with a built in digital tuner I can now record off the air HD channels. The result is fantastic...I get to watch "LOST" in hi-def.
As for viewing dvds, the upconversion through my $3 HDMI cable makes regular dvds look amazing.
I'd recommend this player/recorder to: 1) those of you looking to upgrade their current units that don't come w/a digital tuner & 2) those of you looking to hold-off buying a Blu-Ray player for now.
