Disappointed, but keeping it March 27, 2007 11 out of 15 found this review helpful
I am a bit disappointed with this DVD player. I had a Pioneer DV-C505 standard DVD player (not progressive). I recently purchased a 42" LCD and wanted a player that was progressive and upscaling to 1080i.
I connected my old Pioneer (non-progressive) player and watched movies the 1st weekend. DVD's DVD-R's etc. I was surprised that the newer DVD's in 16:9 looked pretty good.
I expected to see an improvement in color or resolution with the Sony DVP-NC85H. However, I can't see any difference whatsoever in quality of image as displayed on my 42" LCD.
I ran the old DVD player with very cheap component cables straight to the LCD TV. I ran the new Sony DVP-NC85H straight to the LCD TV with HDMI. I got the blue HDMI working light and sound and image are transferred to the screen/LCD TV, but the quality is no better than my old Pioneer (non-progressive) player. Did I do something wrong? I can't see any color or resolution improvement.
I may return this since it also introduced an 'echo' issue that is acknowledged in the Sony manual. The echo issue is between the HDMI sound transferred to the TV and the digital coax sound delivered via my receiver. With the old DVD player, no echo and excellent 5.1 sound from the TV and my receiver (simultaneous). The Sony manual states clearly that if you output via the HDMI, you cannot tune out any echo created by optical or coax digital DTS or Dolby Digital output. The manual says to output the signal via PCM. However, that still introduces echo that cannot be removed.
Maybe I am doing something wrong, but this player is definitely not an improvement over a standard, non-progressive player in my opinion.
I thought maybe it was just the new LCD TV, but it displays excellent HD quality via HDMI input from my local cable companies digital tuner/DVR box.
What are you guys comparing the supposed good quality on this player to?
Update:
I went back and tried comparing my old DVD player with this new Sony even more. I was able to change some of the settings in just the right combination on the Sony that improved the image. For the YCaCr/RGB setting, I tried RGB instead which got rid of lots of the red blocky imagery. I set the sharpness to 1 and the BNR on. These 3 settings improved the image to the level where I will not return this DVD player.
I still challenge someone from Sony to look at the image from my non-progressive DVD player (480i) and tell me how the 1080i (upscale) out of this unit is significantly better. Even looking at it 6" from the screen. Honestly, I could pick out the pores on James Bonds face with the non-progressive 480i player, so maybe it is just really good, and the Sony just doesn't shine as much due to that.
The echo is better or worse depending on the DVD played. I have been asking friends with HD setups and they commented that echo is a problem with a lot of setups. TV sound is not usually used even as a center, I guess.
Reading the comments here helped me a lot. Especially comments regarding the feedback on the TV for what grade of signal the TV is seeing. Mine display reports 1080i with the Sony connected, 480i with my old DVD player connected, as expected. I hadn't realized I could pull that up.
I would give the Sony a 4 for features(Divx playback, SACD, etc)and a 3 for picture output for an average of 3.5, but the 1-5 scale entry above is frozen now in edit mode.
Also, I had reservations about non-shuffle, disk-to-disk abilities on this DVD player. You can shuffle on one DVD/CD, but not between 1-5. I plan on working around that by playing MP3 disks for parties, Xmas, etc where I need the shuffle capability. Incidentally, I like loading my DVD player up with multiple DVD's for an evenings viewing, or just leave some favorites in. Some movies are 2 disk and I have not tested that it'll shuffle to the next disk when the 1st runs out, but I expect it!
Fantastic for the price - TERRIBLE Company October 20, 2006 10 out of 10 found this review helpful
Noticeably better picture, via the HDMI connection than a previous Sony 5 Disc player we had (allthough that was very good). I really like how the home videos (HDD Sony Camcorder straight to DVD) would look and they are really good. I can't think of anything better for under $150.
UPDATE!! This is terrible, SONY is terrible. Two times the display read "Tray Locked" and I couldn't fix it. Customer Service from SONY stinks to high heaven. I paid $30 to send it to Laredo, where it was "fixed" and after a month, again the "Tray Locked" I was on hold with customer support for 25 minutes and then an hour and nothing! I am done with all Sony products.
Makes Your HDTV "Sparkle" August 29, 2006 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
This truly remarkable player will bring out a wonderful picture on your HDTV from your DVD collection. This is an economical way to enjoy your movies/programs while you wait out the battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD (remember the Beta-VHS wars?). You don't want to be on the losing side of that fight, and the best way to exploit the terrific picture on your HDTV is this Sony player. It does what it says it will, and at our house at least, it's given a lot more pleasure from our disk collection. An added surprise to me was how great the picture looks even from DVDs recorded on our DVD recorder (DVD-R disks on a different brand recorder). I highly recommend this player!
Buy this instead of a CD changer December 1, 2007 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
My Denon DCM-390 died after 3 years. Just up and died. (It had replaced Denon's earlier, cheaper model that had lasted for ten years (it was cd-r's that killed the beast).
When my first Denon died after 10 years, I upgraded. I trusted the brand. And HDCD! (woo hoo cares.) It was always glitchy, anyway.
3 years. $300. I paid $200 for the one that lasted 10 years!
So I painstaked over this purchase. I wanted a disc changer. Our Music stereo is completely separate from our DVD/5 channel surround sound setup (we don't do network television).
Why consider a DVD changer to replace your CD changer?
The higher bit-rate sampling? The cheaper cost? The wider compatibility? The flexibility when your dvd player finally dies?
What the hell, I thought, let's try it.
(Sorry Amazon) I bought this one directly from Sony. Refurbished for $95 with a 3 year replacement guarantee.
After my experience with the higher end (not super-high end, I know) Denon, I was more interested in how long will it last than how perfect will it sound.
Yippee! It sounds better than the Denon ever did. Even with the HDCD discs.
Sure, it takes longer to load--it acts more like a DVD player than a CD player--but, man, it sounds great through my Denon amp and Polk speakers. It sounds even better through headphones.
I was tempted, almost convinced that I needed to spend another $200 at least to get a quality CD changer (with a 1 year limited warranty). I was sure there must be a reason the Cd changers cost so much more than the DVD/CD changers. I'm glad I didn't.
I'll be happy if I never hook this thing up to a TV. It sounds great!
Questionable longevity November 15, 2006 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I got one of these a few days after they came out. Initially it worked fine, but its performance has slowly degraded over time with it taking longer and longer to respond to menu choices and button clicks. Now it randomly decides it won't play discs or will abort in the middle of playing! Warranty repair is expensive - keep your receipt.
