1 out of 5 stars caters well to a niche market   February 19, 2006

I had high hopes for this product, as the competing Philips DivX capable DVD player has had a lot of complaints about reliability.

The good news is that this player is, in some ways, more capable than advertised. It played a DVD+R disc in PAL format, athough the manual specifically states that it only plays NTSC, and doesn't mention +R. As for quality, well, the sound was fine, and it was interesting to discover that it could fast forward in an audio CD. Play was extremely quiet, impressively so. Also, the black on the video display was the finest I have ever seen (or not seen) -- simply beyond criticism, untarnished by even the slightest sign of color or light.

The bad news is that in the video realm, the player stuck steadfastly to its strength, and displayed only black. No picture at all. Not a single pixel. Not even a setup screen or a screensaver could be coaxed from the player. I tested mainly with component video into a Toshiba colorstream TV, using the supplied cable, and also the cable currently working just fine with a Koss 4125 player (a present on loan from my daughter, which I highly recommend -- the player, that is, in this context, although I recommend my daughter also). I also tested with ordinary video output, with entirely consistent results. My only other criticism is that the tray is very flimsy.

So, I can recommend this only for blind solitary video enthusiasts, a niche market if ever I've seen one. Unfortunately (or should that be fortunately?), this reviewer doesn't fall into this category. I've already printed my return slip, and will bid the Toshiba SD-3990 a fond farewell.

5 out of 5 stars very good divx player, and outstanding prog-scan player   March 30, 2006

Many people are bashing this player because it requires a composite connection for the initial setup. It's lame, but once you set it to prog-scan, it will stay that way. So don't let that dissuade you from an excellent deal.

As a straight DVD player, this player excels. It has an absolutely brilliant progressive picture, with rich colors, and no prog-scan artifacts whatsoever. There are also a couple of nice digital touch-up controls, sharpness and brightness which can come in handy to boost dark images.

As a DIVX/Xvid player, also excellent. Highly compatible with divx 4/5 and vxid, not at all with divx 3.11 or ms mp4 v2 - according to my testing. plays ac3 audio on these files too. Interesting problem with divx subtitles. Very compatible, yet places them in the middle of the screen, which is weird, but oddly workable. The menu system for avi files is intuitive, but only captures the first 16 characters of the filename.

As a dvd-r player, it's also solid. It has played all media I've thrown at it (-r, -rw). The only problem is that it's picky about flaws. In fact, I have dozens of labeled dvd-r's which will break-up and not play past a certain point. unfortunate, but after I removed the labels (not an easy process) they played to the end.

Now for my favorite feature, the coup de grace: auto aspect-ratio. I have a 16:9 set. When I enable this feature (default), anamorphic titles will fill the screen, 4:3 titles will be in the middle (though zoomed in ever-so-slightly) and non-anamorphic letterbox titles will be zoomed in to fill the width of the 16:9. It makes this adjustment for dvd and divx content. And it gets it right 95% of the time - the other 5% you can adjust manually.

I purchased the Toshiba after tiring of the shortcomings of my Philips dvp642. I haven't looked back

4 out of 5 stars Does What I Wanted   November 21, 2006

This is a low-end product, but performs well. Has played everything I've fed it so far. Problem with blank screen cited by another reviewer is a Catch 22. If you hook-up component video out of the box, you may get a blank screen because the unit is not set for component output (a selection you make during setup). I hooked up S-video which gave me a screen, made the component selection in setup, and reattached the component cables. Works fine.

4 out of 5 stars Instuctions not complete   February 26, 2006

I read the above review (O Lucky Man) however, I purchased the Toshiba SD-3990 anyway. I had the same problem as mentioned, sound but no picture. To solve the problem, here is what you do-
Start by hooking the Player to your TV using the RCA Video Out Connector(it comes setup for this connection type). Then, push Setup Button on the remote. Here you will designate all the specifics (such as Video- SVideo, Component, Pr Pb Y--and the type of Audio connection you desire). After completing Setup, I enjoyed excellent picture and sound.
It played all the media stated in the manual.
A Good Buy For The Money.

1 out of 5 stars Stopped working after 6 months but used to be nice!   August 8, 2006

It was a nice affordable player while it lasted but today it suddenly stopped being able to read any disc. The message reads 'no disc'. This is my second encounter with a bad TOSHIBA DVD player. The other one, owned by my relative is just fussy and stops whenever it feels like it. No more TOSHIBA DVD players for me!
UPDATE: Customer support recommended to unplug the player for a few minutes but that didn't solve the problem. Being too stingy to pay for repairs or buying a new one I opened this player and 1) cleaned the lens with a fine paintbrush and 2)disconnected and connected back a flat flexible cable that goes from the dvd drive to the 'motherboard'. One of the things or both did the trick and the player is working again so I can give back a few stars and reserve a star for myself too :)
