5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   November 6, 2007

I've been resisting getting a camcorder for years. I didn't want to mess with disks, tapes or any of that jazz. I'm not a professional photographer either, so I don't want to worry about zooming or lighting and I don't need a thousands buttons and settings. The Flip is perfect for people like me. Just turn it on and hit the record button. That's it. No fuss, no cords, and if it turns out bad - delete it on the spot. I was able to plug directly into my laptop USB port and access the video I made. And sixty minutes gives me plenty of time to catch my cat doing something cute, or opening presents at Christmas. The design is sleek, small and pretty durable. I won't use the tripod option, but having it is good for those that have trouble holding the Flip steady.

This is a wonderful product for those who aren't tech savvy. Even those that are will find it convenient and easy - and there are plenty of software programs out there (like Roxio Media Suite 10) that offer more advanced video manipulation for what you capture with the Flip. Overall, I can't recommend this enough. It's so easy, I actually plan to do a video review for Amazon!

4 out of 5 stars Flip is okay, but way overpriced. RCA EZ201 is $50 cheaper and more features.   October 9, 2007

The only strong point about the Flip is the convenience of one-button operation. Agreed, the picture quality is nowhere close to the real camcorders that cost twice or thrice as much. However, there are some other brands of such convenient toy-like camera in the same league as Flip, example, the RCA small wonder, the Aiptek, Mustek, etc. Compared with these in the same league with similar picture quality, Flip is way over-priced.

The RCA small wonder and Flip are made with the same technology, but RCA EZ201 has more features and yet sells for $50 less than Flip Ultra.

I bought both the RCA small wonder EZ201 for $100 and Flip Utra for $150 last week. Their picture quality are similar. Yet RCA can run 4 hrs at HQ on 2GB while Flip runs only 1 hour on 2GB, albeit a reviewer claimed he got 2 hrs on the 2GB Flip when he inadvertently left it on.

The small wonder has the added advantage of rewind and fast-forward during playback. Its LCD can be flipped back, useful for shooting video with yourself in. Also playback on RCA EZ201 is much louder than the whisper from Flip Ultra. The RCA has SD slot which is useful travelling without a laptop, and you can just slide in another SD, rather than lugging a laptop to empty out the videos from Flip in order to shoot more.

In summary, Flip Ultra is good but RCA EZ201 has more features and is $50 cheaper than Flip. Also, Aiptek DV5900 now sells at only $60 at CC and has more features. Check out their video quality from youtube.

I like the ultra version of the flip video for the ability to use a tripod.

2 out of 5 stars I had high hopes, but...   October 23, 2007

I had really high hopes for this product. Read all the great reviews on Amazon and finally decided to take the plunge when one of the major newspapers where I live published a great review of the Flip Video Ultra. After a couple of weeks with this camera in the house, here are some observations. First off, I love the concept. Which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1. But for a second generation product, this camera still doesn't do it for me. Set up was pretty simple (I have a Mac). But from the very first attempt at shooting video, I discovered that the red "record" button was much too small. I'm a normal sized guy with normal sized hands, and everytime I went to push the record button, my thumb would end up activating one of the arrow keys surrounding the record button instead. I found that I had to use just the very tip of my thumb--actually the tip of my thumbnail--to push the record/stop button in order for it to function properly. Just too much of an inconvenience for me. (By the way, I e-mailed the support folks at Flip about this issue and they said that the record button is being redesigned for future models so that this problem is no longer. Uhhh...why didn't you just design it right in the first place??) Also, just a few days after I set the camera up for the first time, I was notified that there was a software update for the it. I downloaded the update (I'm on a Mac) and afterwards found my computer ran rather sluggishly. A reboot helped a bit, but not totally. Deleting the software altogether, however, fixed the problem. I also had problems with the camera not recognizing that I had deleted videos from it. Example...I'd shoot a 2-minute video, then upload it to my computer and delete it from the camera. Yet the camera still said that I only had 58 minutes of shooting time left...instead of 60. E-mail to the support team at Flip resulted in a list of "try this" items. Eventually, it got fixed. But what a pain!! Lastly, I question how long the little pop-up USB connector will last. I bought a USB extension cable to take some of the strain off of plugging the camera into my laptop, but even in connecting the extension cable to the little flip-up USB connector, I just got the sense that the thing could break at any minute. So, that's my review. I wish I could've given this camera 5 stars. I really WANTED it to be a 5-star item. But after experiencing its ups and (mostly) downs for several days, my wife and I decided our money would be better spent elsewhere. Granted, the concept is a great one. Especially being able to directly upload videos to YouTube (athough it went slooooooooooooow, even on a high-speed Internet connection). But I think the Flip Video Ultra still has some major bugs to work out. After all, having to e-mail tech support 8 times in two days? That's a bit much for something that's supposed to be so "simple." I'm not saying this product won't be right for you. I'm just saying it wasn't right for me. And I'm returning it today.

4 out of 5 stars Fills a void, and is fun . . .   November 28, 2007

Though I'm no video expert, the Flip has been a fun transition into videography. The video quality could be better, but if you don't have a videocamera with you it doesn't matter how good the quality is. In my limited time since getting the Flip it has been incredibly convenient (not just to use but to download vidoes for e-mailing and uploading), reliable and easy to use. It's so small it's easy to carry anywhere, and to have it with you almost all the time. It's so easy to use there's no hesitance to take it out and start using for a quick video from some hike you're on or to record some story being told at Thanksgiving dinner. It's far better than nothing, and is a lot of fun to have around. You can move up to a different videocamera if you need, but I recommend the Flip as a starter and as a very convenient videocamera to have with you practically all the time.
