HD70 - Great Value Projector February 24, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Recently bought an Optoma HD70 and I'm really happy with it so far. The image is sharp, colors are bright, and its ready to use straight out of the box. I use it mainly with my XBOX360 so the HD resolution is great for the XBOX's 720p output. Only slight complaint is that the brightness isn't great in daylight but unless you shell out for a top of the range projector you can't expect that.
A Bargin And Worth Every Penny April 11, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My wife and I have owned this projector for 4 months and we couldn't be happier. The 108" picture in our setup is bright and the colors true, even in room light that washed out our last projector's picture. It can't compete with sunlight (what affordable projector can?) but when the sun goes down or the curtains are closed, the picture rocks. Since HD isn't availble in our area, I can't report how HDTV looks, but the 1080i picture from my XBox and my upconversion DVD player's 720p picture looks flawless. I would have liked to see more connection options - at least 2 HDMI ports would have been welcome. I also experienced an error that I gather from my research is fairly common: I shutdown the projector, but the fan wouldn't stop running. It happened only once and it was solved by unplugging the unit from the wall, but it was a black mark in an otherwise flawless performance. Highly recommended. We couldn't be happier.
Great projector August 4, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Was perusing for a projector for my son's party and looked at reviews. The Optoma had better than average reviews and couldn't find one in my area (Honolulu). The only projector that came close to the specs in the store was $200 more. Since the party was getting nearer, I looked at Costco and Amazon. Costco had this model on sale with a free screen but with shipping it would've cost more. Then I shopped at Amazon and it showed a rebate for $200. Ordered it and came within a week. The rebate I printed out from Optoma states that I also should get a free screen. So $600 with rebate isn't a bad deal and Amazon had free shipping on top of that!
I was surprised how lite weight the unit was. I had doubt at first because to me weight=substance. Was pleasantly surprise when I turned it on. The image was incredible, bright and sharp! There's multiple menus to adjust to your liking and am still learning how to use it. The menus are a no brainer. Thank goodness the cables were included and thus saved me time from buying additional accessories. I highly recommend this unit.
Can't beat it for the price August 30, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I purchased mine for 950.00 from Amazon and Optoma is having a 200.00 rebate. So for 750.00 your wife will give you the thumbs up! The device is awesome. It runs a little warm and has a limited zoom but with a little planning (in regards to placement) you should have no problem. The fan is quiet and the picture is great. 720p is more than plenty for about 90% of everyone on the planet. Yes, 1080p is a higher resolution, but really, it is a little bit of Marketing madness. The image this projector creates will keep you grinning ear to ear. Trust me, your friend will spend a kings ransom for bragging rights of owning a 1080p, but you will take one look at their image and realize that the Optoma HD70 is no slouch and with the money you saved you can afford to upgrade your speakers or receiver.
Calibrates to outstanding picture November 10, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I previously owned an Optoma H31 and was extremely happy with it to the point that I just didn't need to gawk at the plasmas and LCD widescreen TV's at Bestbuy anymore. I was hoping for a modest upgrade with the HD70 since it cost me about the same to sell my H31 and upgrade as it does to simply buy a new bulb for it.
When I first hooked up and viewed the HD70 on a white screen, I was impressed with the 1280x720 picture. It made my computer feed perfectly viewable and pleasant to look at. With the H31 I had to view the screen in 480p to get a sharp and readable display. But this kind of resolution makes the icons huge and very little can fit on the screen. HD through Vista Media Center looks much better as well.
What really makes this projector outstanding is when you pair it with a nice upconverting DVD player (I can't speak for HD players, I don't have one). I have the Oppo 970-HD. I set the output to 720p upconversion. Then, you need to spend a little bit of time calibrating the signal. You don't HAVE to buy Avia. For now, what I did was go on a forum online where users post their own settings. I did this and then fine-tuned. One thing that really brings out the oustanding potential of this projector is to turn the color down so that the picture (especially the fleshtones) look natural, not overly sunburned. Then, I turned up the Brilliant Color to a brightness that wasn't too unnatural looking. Sharpness is at max as well.
The results are outstanding if you are patient after some minor calibrating!! I can only imagine what professional calibration would look like!
