5 out of 5 stars SanDisk Cruzer great for ReadyBoost   May 12, 2007
23 out of 26 found this review helpful

I have a SanDisk Cruzer U3 drive and it works great. I purchased another with 4 GB to use solely as for ReadyBoost on my Vista computer. Installation was a no-brainer and it immediately offered me an option to use it for ReadyBoost and to apportion the 4 GB between the normal Cruzer US functions and ReadyBoost. I chose to used the majority for ReadyBoost and have been rewarded with better performance. I keep it installed permanently. I'd recommend it highly.

1 out of 5 stars Frustrations, Freezes, Reboots, and Pain   February 21, 2008

All of the folks complaining of system freezes and reboots when using this drive are true. It seems to be erratic though so some users have no issues. I have 4 PC's and 2 Mac's in the house. This drive works fine on both mac's and 1 of the PC's. The other 3 PC's barf when the drive is inserted and just reboot themselves. It's the U3 software that causes the problems. I have several other flash drives and they all work fine on all machines. Risk it if you want, but there are better, cheaper, faster drives that won't give you headaches like this one. Sandisk just lost a customer and is now on my list of companies that owe me a few hours of my life back.

5 out of 5 stars Great for travelers using internet cafes   August 13, 2007

I bought this for the U3 software which allows you to run Firefox, antivirus, and other programs directly from this drive. You can see what's available at the U3 website. That comes in handy when using internet cafes since you can have Firefox save usernames and passwords. Then you run an antivirus program from the drive. Then you don't have to worry about keyloggers and other spyware if the internet cafe doesn't have good screening. The drive has a password capability so your regular data is also safe if the drive gets lost.

I've heard that you have to have administrator rights on the computer since the drive does add a little bit of info to the Windows registry. But the worst thing that's happened is that the computer has locked due to the internet cafe having software to prevent people from uploading spyware. After they unlocked it, I just put the drive back in and it loaded fine. Usually it just goes through an install process and then works just fine. I expected to have more problems while traveling, but haven't. Haven't run into a Vista computer yet.

Skype also runs from the drive so you can make cheap calls. I can call and check voicemails without the attendants knowing.

The drive works just fine as a regular drive as well and I sync files across my computers with it. Although the pre-installed sync software is mainly to sync one computer with the drive and is not as easy to use to sync multiple ones. I use a different program for that.

5 out of 5 stars AND IT LOOKS GOOD TOO!!   September 11, 2007

I found myself carrying 4 small flash drives in my pocket and decided it was time to get a single drive that would meet the bulk of my needs. THIS IS IT!!! At work I have XP Pro and at home and on my laptop I run VISTA. The U3 works seamlessly between the two operating systems. I appreciate the password protection since I keep school records on this drive. All of the trial software had pretty icons but all went away to free up usable space. I took the black clasp from a PNY neck strap and converted it into a nice key chain attachment so when the drive is not being used it makes a darn nice key fob too. I will probably buy another in the near furture for my wife. We both work in the same school system and work on the same server. Other reviews I read would lead one to believe this unit had some serious flaws. My opinion is they have some serious pickiness issues. The drive is as advertised and it performs extremely well.

1 out of 5 stars Not Vista Compatible   November 23, 2007

Slip it into a Vista PC and Vista starts complaining that it can't find a compatible driver. A Wasted $30. This is the only thumb drive I've ever found that needs a specific driver. All the others load as a USB mass storage device.
