Canon HV30 Camcorder July 20, 2008 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
The camera has been great so far, quite a big difference from a standard definition camcorder. However, the tape deck is quite loud when recording. Loud enough that I seriously considered sending it back, but I can't seem to find a camcorder that gets as good of reviews, and I think it is a similar issue with a lot of mini dv cams. However, my 3CCD Panasonic (PV-GS120) cam is not as loud. It also doesn't seem to pan out as far as my old camcorder, which is kind of annoying if you aren't in a very big space, i.e. living room. They have a lens you can buy to make it larger, (Canon WD-H43 0.7x Wide Angle Converter) but the reviews say it's the weight of the camera, so I rather wait till the technology improves to purchase something like that. One other issue I have found which I don't believe has too much to do with the camcorder but more with your home computer...transferring HD and editing on your computer takes a lot of processing power, so be prepared to be patient even if you have a decent computer!
Amazing Image Quality, Full HD and Great price!!! May 13, 2008 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
I had this Camera when it first came out, and so far I am very pleased... Camcorder looks and feels as a regular Camcorders however the wild factor is the Image Quality, its stunning in clarity and contrast... This is a great Camcorder for those who are looking to capture their best memories in HD mode... Under $1000, this is the best HD camcorder one can bargain for...
One disappointment with this Camcorder is that the video editing software is not included... It comes with software however it is only for editing Still Images (Photos)... With that said, you need to buy your own Video editing software if you want to create DVD's on your Laptop or Desktop... Please also beware that there are very few robust software's in the market that can convert your video files into DVD's... This is where mini tapes lacks improvement, you can watch your video through your camcorder in full HD with stunning clarity however you can't convert your files into Full HD DVD... There is software that can do the job (Vegas Pro 8) however with a price tag of $500; it won't be an option for many buyers...
Happy customer July 28, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
The camera arrived 3 days before my schedule trip to Haiti, so I had a chance to read the manual and lear about the different functions. The learning curve was painless because the camera is very user friendly and the performance (video and still photo) quality were beyond my expectation. i used the camera during my trip to record a music video @ Grosse Roche Beach (St- Marc, Haiti). We spent 3 days shooting under different lighting conditions such as early morning at sunrise, mid afternoon and later sunset. I brought the tapes back to my editor in the US and we put together this fantastic music video "Twist & Shout" using final cut pro. The end result was almost as good as my previous music video " Poupe Kreyol" that was recorded using a $4000.00 Camera. Once again thumbs up to the HV30, easy to used and great video and pictures
Awesome video in the right hands! September 29, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I love this camera, some reviewers say it can get complex to use especially with 24p. If you are not familiar with HD and you want to get the best results and quality you will have to do some research to learn how to use it correctly. It is worth it! Go to [...] and search for HV30 and you will see what people do with this camera, you will be amazed. Video quality is really good and handling of the camera is also really good. I use Adobe Premiere CS3 to edit and it runs smooth, I have a dual core with 2GB of RAM. I haven't notice any noise coming from the camera when you are recording.
I'm really happy with my purchase.
Remember amazon has a 30-day price protection so be sure to check if the camera goes down in price. I bought mine for $748 and one week later (sept 28, 2008) it was at $688. Called amazon and they gave the difference back to my card. Today (sept 29, 2008) the price went up again. Just check for the next 30 days after purchase. :)
Professional HD quality without the professional price tag October 20, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This year's version of last year's camcorder of the year ([...]) with a black paint job and the addition of 30p mode. Great camera.
Pros: -Amazing quality HD video -Uses more common video format than the AVCHD of it's hard drive and flash memory siblings with less compression artifacting and more compatibility with current video editing software (AVCHD editing is very CPU intensive and resource hungry. IMPORTANT: Premiere Pro CS3 and earlier DO NOT support this format without buying an expensive codec. However, CS4 does support it) -Suprisingly small size for a camera this good -Manual focus dial -Manual shutter and aperture priority settings -Great low-light performance -Three shooting modes (24p, 30p, 60i) -Both a viewfinder and an LCD screen -Accessory shoe -Lots of ports (mic, headphones, AV, mini HDMI/firewire, USB, I may be forgetting a couple) -Good image stabilization
Cons: -Manual focus dial could be bigger -Side strap isn't the softest -Viewfinder doesn't telescope or tilt -Cannot adjust both shutter speed and aperture manually, only one or the other (e.g. you can manually set shutter speed but then the camera automatically adjusts aperture, or vice versa) -Front LED light is either too bright up close, or not bright enough from far away, would prefer IR night vision as an option -Menus take a little getting used to, not the most convenient layout
There are more pros and cons here, but these are the ones that are important to me. Overall this camera is GREAT. I absolutely love the amazing quality of the pictures; the high resolution and the wonderfully saturated colors. Great camera, especially for $[...]!
Note: I also recommend getting a Raynox 6600Pro lens for this. I have the 52mm version with a 43mm-52mm adapter (read the recommendations on [...]). Many many uses for it and it works wonders with this camera. Also, if you want to see what this camera can do, just search HV30 in vimeo or youtube and you will find many videos showing off the quality this camera is capable of. Enjoy!
