5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, lots of memory, and the video looks nice   November 16, 2007

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3Q3CCGGDFMLAX The Flip Video Ultra Camcorder is extremely handy. I have other camcorders, that give me greater flexibility in terms of settings, but none is more convenient. I literally carry my Flip around with me now everywhere I go -- so I never have a situation where I want to film something and don't have my camcorder with me.

For outdoors shots, or indoor shots with decent light, the image quality is even comparable with what I get on a much more expensive camcorder -- especially if I only plan to show it on a television or the web. Even the sound is pretty good.

This quick video review was made using the Flip Video Ultra Camcorder and the Web Cam that comes built in to my Mac Book Pro laptop, and then I edited the footage using iMovie. On my Mac I don't bother to use the built in software -- although there is built in software for Mac on the camcorder -- I just plug it in and the camcorder creates a hard drive icon on my desktop. I can import the MPEG-4 files that Flip Video Ultra creates directly on to my desktop or into a project on iMovie. It is as easy to use as a thumb drive: just flip it open and plug it in.

An ideal camcorder for:
1. Anyone. No purse should not have one of these, and it fits nicely in pockets.
2. Parents. No silly or stupid or endearing moment should go unrecorded.
3. Kids. This camera is so easy to use there is no excuse for your child not to aspire to Spielberg.
4. Amateur filmmakers. The way to learn to make movies is by making lots of them. No need to get bogged down in technical details with this one -- just learn to tell stories.
5. Writers and reporters. I bought a fairly expensive Olympus digital voice recorder for use in interviews a while back, and I can honestly say that this records voice at medium range better than that did. The price ($120) was almost the same. Record your thoughts, interview on the fly.
6. Documentary and independent filmmakers. With handy devices like this, you can be a guerrila filmmaker -- and go unnoticed by those who might shut down a more conspicuous shoot.
7. Did I say anybody? Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Simple Video Camera with Great Sound   November 10, 2007

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3PMMFQG8ZSXMK I was fortunate enough to receive a complimentary Flip Video Ultra Series Camcorder for review from Amazon, who offered the product to frequent reviewers to promote their new Video Review feature. Since receiving the Flip Video a week ago, our family has had a blast playing with this diminutive little camera. Like most other families, we own a regular sized video camera that gets pulled out for the occasional school play, Christmas, or major trip. So I wasn't convinced that we would actually use the Flip Video very much.

Wrong! Since owning the camera, we've shot over thirty video clips in a variety of lighting and sound situations. The biggest fans of the camera, of course, are my teenage sons who are a part of the You Tube generation. They love the immediate gratification of being able to shoot a video, flip the USB arm from the side of the camera, plug it into the computer, and use the camera's on board software to upload directly to You Tube in one step.

Here's the blueprint for the Flip Video: the dimensions are 1.2 x 2.2 x 4.2 inches and the camera weighs 7.2 ounces, less than my cell phone. I have a small camera bag, and this little guy fits neatly into it with my still camera, making it easy and accessible - which means that you will actually carry it along on outings. It would easily fit into a pocket. The camera comes with a hand strap and small drawstring bag (not too useful). With 2 GB of memory, the camera can hold up to sixty minutes of footage. All the software you need is loaded onto the camera, which enables you to do some minor editing, file organization, upload clips to the web, or email, and string clips together to make a longer movie. The Flip Video also comes with a cord to connect to the television and watch videos there, but we have not as yet tested that feature.

On the down side, the Flip Video is not the perfect camera for taking far away videos, since it only has a 2x zoom level. I found that it is great for shooting at close range, but when I tried to shoot video from a great distance (as you might do at a school play or sporting event), the results were not great.

I'm looking forward to using the Flip Video to capture those "spur of the moment" situations with my kids that seem to come up in day to day life. Since the camera is so small and light, it easily fits into my small purse and is ready at a moment's notice. We've had a great time playing with the Flip Video and would highly recommend it for families on the go like ours, looking to capture memories without a lot of hassle. Have fun!

2 out of 5 stars Good - But, Sadly, not Great   October 10, 2007

I finally fliped over the Flip. I got it this past (Oct 3) Wed and looked forward to using it on my bike ride on Thur.

Thur. morning, riding down the San Gabriel River Bike Trail towards Pacific Coast Hwy, I took the Flip from my jersey pocket (that's handy, I thought), managed to turn the Flip on and, as I rode along, I shot several seconds, commenting as I rode and shot.

I turned the Flip off, and put it back in my jersey.

I did that several more times. By now I'm really impressed. It is small enough to fit in my riding jersey, and it comes to hand real smooth.

At around 10 miles (Sunset Beach, if you're familiar with the area), I eagerly checked my first production.

Nothing.

Huh. So I pressed the on button a couple of times, and finally saw, "Ready" (couldn't see that riding and shooting).

I jabbed the start button (or run) several times, until finally , the Flip started working.

Well, that seemed to be the way it worked. I would turn it on, hit the run button after "Ready" came up, but nothing would happen.

Nor would it stop when I pushed that little red button. I would have to shut it off.

Well, that's the bad news. The good is that it worked absolutely seamlessly with my Dual Core iMac. It's own software installed cleanly. The clips I was able to shoot I was able to bring into iMovie.

But, as we well know, a product which works sometimes is pretty worthless, over-riding any of the pluses.

Sorry Flip...

Product is returned to Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Capture your memories   November 10, 2007

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2TTI2C9KT1PGU What a great product: a digital video camera that is as easy to carry as a cell phone. It's also relatively cheap in price and makes a great first camera for the teenage children. The 2 GB memory will capture 1 hour of video and it only requires 2 AA bateries (included with the camera).

But even if this isn't your first camera, it's convenient to have something so small and portable. I really wish I had this for my best friends wedding last year, and I can't imagine taking another vacation without this camera.

There are a few drawbacks. First, I wish the USB connector would detach for people who don't have a port on the front of their PC. Second, I had some problems trying to install the built in software. Finally, I wish the zoom was stronger. In my video, you will see some squirrels. I had to get less then 2 feet away from them with the zoom at full power to capture that video.

drawbacks aside, this is a great device. If someone on your christmas list is looking for a digital video camera, don't hesitate choosing this one!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible product; Super easy to use!!   November 5, 2007

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/RQHBMN8C8V7WQ The attached video was my first with this Flip Video. I feel sorry for my Sony Digital Video Handheld that may never be used again. This little Flip Video is the product of the year, a perfect Christmas present for anyone, children to grandparents. It is so easy to use; I still cannot believe it. Connects to the computer or TV. Easy to record, save or delete.

Comes with a quick start guide that gets you going in seconds. Enjoy!!

*Update 11/30/07 Since using this, I agree with the above review. It is super easy to upload the video, save it and then upload it to youtube or a personal website. The camera software has features that should make it a one step process to share it via email or a link to a website. I have not gotten this to work. Each time the processing stalls. I have emailed to the customer service dept and have received prompt replies but no solution.
