 BE READY TO SPEND $$$ ON PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMING March 10, 2007

Are you kidding me? The people touting this remote must be professional programmers hoping you will unsuspectingly buy it (like I did) and then have to hire them to program it. I consider myself somewhat tech savvy, but this is ridiculous. If you want to do it yourself, start by downloading the 72 page programming manual (That's right - 72 pages). The programming manual for the MX-850 is intended for professionals (they actually talk about getting the client to approve the cost of reprogramming whenever the cable company makes channel lineup changes). If you can figure out the programming manual, then you have to download the programming software (if you can get it on the internet). Then you realize the device is not USB compatible (Is it 1998 all over again?). So then you have to go out and buy a $35 serial port to USB converter, install the software for the converter and hope it works. Then the fun really begins when you try to navigate the software and get it to communicate with the remote and do what you want it to do. I previously owned the MX-500 which was easily programmed from the remote itself. The product description for the MX-850 is deceiving in my opinion because it makes it sound as if the remote is easily programmable. It is not. Unless you don't mind spending the money to hire a professional, I'm with the other reviewers who say this remote is far more trouble than it's worth.
UPDATE: OK, I've calmed down considerably after working with this remote for a week. I was able to download the programming software off the internet (URC still restricts software updates to authorized professionals so you will not be able to automatically install IR codes for the latest equipment). Be prepared to spend some time learning how to program the remote yourself, but it can be done. It is a very nice remote once programmed. Tactile feel is great (I would stay away from touchscreen remotes). The new center select button is a huge improvement over older models. After having used the remote for awhile, I would change my rating from one star to three. I would still stay away from this remote unless you have the knowledge and patience needed to program it using the URC software. And to the reviewers who resort to name calling and giving higher ratings only to counteract opinions of others they don't agree with: grow up.

Universal Remote has changed it policy to force you to spend lots of money to hire a professional installer to program the universal remote.
They no longer provide the programming software or access to the codes for the latest equipment. Approved dealers have to supply software and remote codes. Amazon is not approved and a lot of approved dealers have no idea how to support the remote.
Find a universal remote from some other company that is not hostile to consumers

I cannot understand the negative reviews here. It's the equivelant to purchasing a high end "kit-car", knowing you haven't a clue how to put it together. And then saying it's no good! It's called taking ownership of your product. It's well worth the money if you learn how to program it properly. The PC software is not that hard to get used to, and if you program it in the order URC suggests, it's fairly easy. I have it controling a full blown home theater(7 components), lighting, fan, and 2 additional zones of music. My wife, who is is VERY technically challenged uses it with NO problems whatsoever. Everything is set up as "activities" such as "watch tv", "watch dvd", "listn cd" with macros. If you are patient and take the time to learn how to program it, there is nothing you can't do with this remote. I suggest using it with an MRF-250 (RF base station) to eliminate pointing the remote during initial start up of activities, as well as flawless operation. If you have questions when programing, there are very helpful websites such as remotecentral.com where you can post your question, and get fast accurate responses from people who know this remote inside and out. I would give it 6 stars if possible.

Even my wife can operate a complex system w/ this remote. I tried the Harmony remotes, but couldn't get them to work properly. This one even allows us to put our equipment behind closed doors (using the MRF250) it becomes RF. We love the thing, it completed our Home Theater!
MX-850 Still not operational? December 6, 2006

I have downloaded and uploaded all the software for my MX-850 and it still doesn't work. I haved pushed the (Main) and (Enter) button to try to get the Learn mode and select my Mitsubishi WD-57731 TV. But when I go through all the function buttons on my TV remote to get the MX-850 to learn it, nothing works??? Am I doing something wrong or do I really to need a professional to set my MX-850?
I like the great price that I got, but they didn't tell me about the additional cost of the $300 plus to have it set up by a professional Home Theater specialist. Now I realize why the MX-850 got such a poor review. I would really like to find out how he was able to set up his MX-850 so easily to give it such a great review?
Other wise I may have to send it back.
