this product is really bad June 21, 2008 This is a really bad product which does not work for noise cancelling. It's really flimsy as a regular headset and does not last. Don't buy this product.
Brookstone also has bad customer service and this product is not returnable or refundable after you discovered it is a bad product.
Don't Buy June 4, 2008 I had a pair and after a couple months they have a short after reading another review on this issue I don't even want to bother trying to exchange them...to much hassle to end up with the same issue again.
My favorite earbuds ever! May 5, 2008 I bought these earbuds in an Airport Brookstone nearly two years ago. I was nervous about paying $35 for them and felt like I had been gouged. Then I used them!
After two years, I am so happy that I am ready to get another pair. I did get a short, but it just occurred in the past few days and I have had them for 2 years. I've taken them all over the place. I keep them in my backpack most of the time, and despite frequently cramming them in there, I've never had a problem until now. I go to law school, so I frequently listen to stuff on my computer so it doesn't bother others and I take these in and out, off and on, and never have problems.
The retracting mechanism is awesome. I hate my earbuds tangling up, and I have for years. These I don't really ever have to worry. The mechanism can be a touch quirky at times, but nothing that would really reduce my enjoyment. Plus, it allows for several level of extension, so you don't have to extend all the way every time.
The sound quality has been fantastic to me, on my iPod and my computer. I really don't know what one of the review was talking about the Apple provided buds were better. I hate those buds and use these exclusively, and I use them all the time. My ears hurt every time I put the iPod given buds in, the sound is always more distant/less clear, I have to turn the volume up higher just to hear, and other noise is distracting. These are much more comfortable. They are earbuds that are comfortable in the ears. Plus, with their noise cancellation in combination with their putting the sound further in your ear has always given me rich sound quality that felt like the music was almost coming from my inside head (not like I had bulky speakers in or on my ears). The quality is so good, and the sound cancelation so easy that I can keep the volume low but still hear much better than my Apple earbuds, which is good because I don't like destroying my ears.
Like I said, they are the most comfortable earbuds I've had. I used to have headphones, earphones, etc. I hated one thing or another about them. I really am not interested in spending the money for high tech headphones with nice noise cancellation and all that. I would much rather use these earbuds than any low or medium quality headphones, earphones, or earbuds.
What more can I say? I love these to death, and after 2 years of excellent use I am more than willing to pay another $35 to buy a new pair. Best earbuds/headphones I have ever had.
Great on a whim...but then, not so much... May 2, 2008 Bought these on a whim at the Houston airport after realizing that my standard earbuds wouldn't cut it on a flight to Florida.
I opened them up on the plane, plugged them into my iPod, and was blown away with how much noise they downed out. I couldn't hear the plane engines, or my wife sitting next me. The retracting mechanism seemed like a good idea too.
Once I got home and used them in my day-to-day life, my opinion changed. For starters, the retractable thingy makes it difficult, if not impossible to use them at work. The weight of it pulls on the cord and gets in the way. The cord is too short to use at my desk.
But it was at the gym where I decided to return these. Again, the mechanism makes it impossible to use these on the treadmill, as it weighs it down and pulls. And the wires are so thin that you can hear them rub against you. It sounded like I was running outside in a windstorm.
Soo, since I rarely travel but listen to music constantly at work and at the gym, these babies are going back. If you travel a lot and are looking for an inexpensive pair of earbuds, go for it. But if you plan on using these for anything besides sitting in an airplane seat, you'll want something else.
Poor Sound Quality, Poor Customer Service January 9, 2008 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have an Ipod. I was satisfied with the sound quality the Apple earbuds provided. Unfortunately, the cable for the Apple earbuds was constantly tangling. I was searching for a solution to this problem.
While at an airport, I purchased the Brookstone earbuds with the retractable cord. When I questioned a staff member about the sound quality of the earbuds, the staff member indicated that the sound quality of the Brookstone earbuds would be of higher quality than those provided by Apple with the Ipod. I paid >$30 for the set which is a bit higher than the prices I'm seeing on the net.
I immediately began using the Brookstone set exclusively. After a while I noticed that I was enjoying my music less. The sound seemed tinny, less rich than I thought the sound had been. It seemed that something was wrong, something had changed. I thought, however, that I might be imagining the difference. I didn't initially connect the perceived change in sound quality with the Brookstone earbuds.
After a while I began wondering if the change was related to the Brookstone earbuds. I decided to perform a test. While listening to music on my Ipod, I repeatedly switched the 2 sets of earbuds. It was apparent that the sound quality of the Brookstone set was significantly inferior to the sound quality of the Apple provided set.
I went to a Brookstone store in a local mall and asked for a refund or store credit. The Brookstone staff told me that because my purchase was over 30 days old, they could not provide a refund, nor could they provide a store credit. They acknowledged that there was a problem with the retractable mechanism, resulting in many returns. I replied that the retractable mechanism on my set did not work very well, but that was minor compared to the sound. If the sound was acceptable, the retractable mechanism was not a big issue with me.
After much discussion, the staff offered to go outside of company policy and replace my earbuds with the exact same product. I declined, stating that the most important feature in an earbud set is sound quality and another set would not solve the sound problem. I left the store quite disappointed. Brookstone has a store at many airports in the US. I travel quite a bit for work, often overseas. As such, I would be an ideal customer for Brookstone. After this experience, however, I will never shop at Brookstone again.
