4 out of 5 stars comfortable fit and good bass   May 24, 2006

I keep trying different earbuds trying to find some that are comfortable and have a good sound. I have a rio and a new IPOD Nano. I keep them in different cases so I wanted a set of earbuds for the Nano. The original equipment earbuds have a poor sound and are very uncomfortable. I have a set of noise cancelling JVC earphones that I use for plane travel and are very good in both noise cancelling and sound reproduction so I decided to try these JVC earbuds.

1. The fit with 3 sizes of cushions is great. I like the ones that come on it just fine. Used them for 2 hours today and they were very comfortable.

2. The sound is variable. If you use in a noisy environment like a car, the bass is a little muffled and hard to hear although the midrange and upper range is excellent. If a quieter environment like an office, the bass is just fine and the overall sound quality is execellent.

3. I got the black nano, so I opted for the black earbuds.

4. These are closed and although they aren't noise reduction (they don't produce a hum that cuts out the ambiant sounds), they don't allow in much outside noise either so be careful using them walking or jogging around traffic.

I have 3 other sets but these are by far the most comfortable.

3 out of 5 stars OK, not awesome   June 14, 2006

I bought a pair of these on a whim to replace a set of Sony earbuds (similar, in-ear design). On the whole they perform adequately but I think I like the Sonys a little better. Sound from the JVC earbuds seems brighter overall but the bass isn't as good. Technically I think the bass reproduction is fine, but I found it difficult to get good bass sound out of them without turning up the volume, which made the mids and high end sort of uncomfortable. I think the Sonys technically distort/over-emphasize the bass a little bit, but the practical result is that the overall sound is more comfortable on your ears.

Basically, I think this is a decent, cheap pair of headphones suitable for your MP3 player. Don't expect any "audiophile" quality, but they work fine.

4 out of 5 stars Good IEMs for the price   October 5, 2006

I've recently bought several pairs of headphones to go with my IPod and AM/FM pocket radio (and replace an ancient pair of Koss Pro 4X full size headphones, a few sets of junker headphones and earbuds, and marginal-at-best stock IPod earbuds). One of these is the JVC HAFX55ZB.

The good: these are Inner Ear Monitors (IEMs), and as such cut out a good deal of external noise. This makes these useful for airplanes, buses, etc. (I have used mine while cutting grass.) It also makes these less bothersome to those around you than an "open design" which leaks sound.

As for the sound, I think these are quite good for the price. If inserted correctly to get a good seal, there is sufficient bass; the midrange may be a bit recessed, but not enough to cause any problems, and for me at least I prefer a "recessed" midrange to a bigger "in your face" sound. Also, I didn't notice as much microphonics (headphones amplifying your footsteps / wind / etc.) as my new Sennheiser IEMs.

Bad: I have a bit more trouble getting a good seal with these than with the Senns. And with any IEM, if you don't get a good seal, you will get *no* bass. Also, these are much less efficient than any other headphones I now own, so you will have to turn up the volume to get adequate volume with these.

Other: The cord is a bit longer than other portable phones, which may be good or bad for you. These also feature a "J" cord, where the right cord is significantly longer than the left; again, personal preference.

Overall, a nice set of portable phones for under $25 if you want small size and external noise blocking.

2 out of 5 stars Comfortable, Yes, but poor fidelity and lousy bass.   September 12, 2006

Being new to the MP3 world the earbuds that came with our Zen Nano units are our benchmark. We think they are pretty good reproducing our music but they are just a little big for comfort.

The improvement in comfort of these JVC buds is not worth the trade off in sound the quality of the original Zen buds.

For example the bass line and harmonica riffs are almost non existant in Waylon Jennings music. Not good.

They are not as efficient either, the volume level needs to be boosted much, much higher than with the Zen buds.

We will send them back.

4 out of 5 stars everyone has different ears   December 25, 2006

These little guys sound good (very good) when plugged into my more expensive CD player, but sound crappy when plugged into my cheap CD player. I don't know why - other headphones/earphones I have aren't so picky. It sounds like they require more oomph than the oomph-less amplifiers in the cheap little gadgets can produce, that they are clipping, or some other audiofile term. Huge distortion on the bass which disappears when I use them with better equipment.
I was impressed by the 5 Hz low end in the specs, but, having listened to them, now believe that this is more of a metaphor for strong bass than actual specs someone measured. They have a strong bass for listening to music, but I also use them to listen to pieces that have computer-generated sine waves down low (but not as low as 5 Hz) - I can hear the low sine waves with other earphones that do not claim to dip down to 5 Hz, and hear nothing with these.
