The Best Bluetooh Headset To Date August 24, 2008 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Over the years I have tried a whole bunch of bluetooth headsets, from Motorola to Plantronics to Jawbone, and now the Bang & Olufsen EarSet 2. In short, in terms of functionality and fit/finish, the B&O beats them all hands down. In terms of cost, the B&A is by far the most expensive, at $350. Just an additional AC charger from B&O costs more ($135) than the entire headset kit from other headset manufacturers. However, if you look long-term, the high initial cost of the Earset 2 might - MIGHT - be worth it because it works better than any other headset, and might last longer (see below).
The good points in detail:
1. Incoming sound quality - Every other headset I have used has had mediocre, tinny, incoming sound. The Earset 2 has a rich natural incoming sound. Low frequency tones are pronounced, accentuating the spoken voice.
2. Outgoing sound quality - With every other headset I have used, people complained about poor sound quality. Tinniness, echoing, and sounding I was talking inside a well. The Aliph Jawbone was the worst offender. With the Earset 2, people do not have those issues. To them, I sound natural, like on a land line.
3. Build quality - Every other headset I have used was cheaply built. Part of this was for lightness of weight. But the bottom line is that they looked and felt cheap. One of the worst offenders was the Jawbone. That cheap earhook was constantly breaking due to the cheap quality metal used (see my Jawbone review here on Amazon). The Earset is made of aircraft quality aluminum and high-impact plastic. The feel of the unit is very solid, and of high quality. And it looks kind of cool.
4. Bluetooth signal - The Jawbone's signal is weak. Walk away 20 ft and put a wall between the phone and the headset, and the headset becomes almost unusable. When I put my phone inside my waterproof neoprene drybag waistpouch, the Jawbone becomes almost unusable. No such problems with the Earset 2. I have walked 20 feet away and put 2 walls in between, and the headset works just fine. A minimal amount of crackling, but no serious deficits.
5. Comfort - The Earset 2 is light, and once you get used to the unusual design and ergonomics, it works. For hours. No problems.
6. Guarantee - 3 years. And it better last that long considering the purchase cost.
Now for the bad points, for which I took away one point:
1. Traveling - The design could have been made a lot more traveler friendly. The charger holder is clumsy, and there is no way to charge the headset from a computer's USB port. FOR SHAME!!
2. Interface button - There is a single button controlling conversations and volume. The button is too loose, and it is easy to do one thing while you are thinking you were doing another. B&O should either use two buttons, or redesign the existing button for more tactile response and stiffness.
3. On/Off - The unit is turned on by swinging out the mike boom. Unfortunately, if you get a call while the headset is turned off and the mike boom is in closed position, you will likely lose the call. I would love it if the unit could be in off position and immediately engage the phone as soon as the mike boom was moved out into ready position, but alas, that is not to be. So I usually keep the unit in On mode, which is unfortunate. Annoying, but not fatal.
4. Cost, Cost, Cost - This thing costs a fortune. However, over the last 2 years I have spent over $300 on a multitude of other bluetooh models that have either sucked in terms of functionality, or have failed. The Aliph Jawbone is guilty of both sucking and failing. I had x2 Jawbones, and neither lasted more than 6 months.
I think I will keep the B&O Earset 2. I hope it will be worth it. I'll let you know in 3 years. If I do not lose it first.
Great option for those wearing behind the ear hearing aids March 11, 2008 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've looked EVERYWHERE to find a headset that will fit with my hearing aids without hurting my ear canal or falling off. The B&O ear hook swings down over your ear and can be adjusted comfortably over your hearing aid. The speaker neither bores into your ear canal or presses against the ear lobe causing unpleasant whistling feedback. This is by far the best design out there I've seen, and I've seen lots. It's extremely comfortable and easy to use.
I'm still trying to figure out if I can listen to music on my iPhone with it, but I give it five stars just based on the superior design and comfort.
In a class by itself -- just don't lose the charger September 28, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
My husband bought this for me for Christmas and I love it. the sound quality is in a class by itself. The comfort and ability to size it to any ears is what makes this headset truly outstanding. Most of them you have to really force a "one size fits all" fit your head and they did not feel secure at all.
The people that I am talking to aren't constantly asking "what???" and I'm able to hear people clearly even when I'm outside.
I love the way the charger base doubles as a case because I can throw the whole thing in my purse and not worry about it getting lost or crushed. This is a BIG advantage in my mind.
My only "ding" is that the charger is unlike any other -- the jack is particularly small -- so if you lose that, you are stuck. I have searched high and low for a replacement (I usually like to have at least 2 so I can charge at work and at home) but it seems like the only way I'm going to be able to have a "spare charger", then I'm going to have to buy an additional headset.
If anyone knows a source for a replacement charger, please let me know!
Other than that -- if you are more organized than I am and not in the habit of losing little things like chargers -- I would highly recommend this headset.
B & O Earset 2 January 8, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Wow! I have tried numerous bluetooth headsets and none match the build and sound quality of this headset. The fit is very comfortable -- I wore it for over eight hours on the first day with no discomfort. The control button is well placed and very easy to use. The sound quality is excellent with voices sounding natural and full. This unit is replacing a Jawbone which has no way near the voice quality and ease of operation of the Earset 2. One particular annoyance of the Jawbone is the bright flashing light that is on when connected and cannot be turned off. I felt like a conspicuous walking lighthouse when wearing the unit. The Earset 2 has a discrete small green blinking light on the back and doesn't yell "look at me!" to the immediate world. The Earset 2 is expensive when compared to other ear sets and well worth it. In the long run, I spent far more on inferior items trying to find a satisfactory unit and would be way ahead had I purchased the Earset 2 in the first place.
best yet! Cheap if you consider February 11, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've had to many wireless headsets that ended up either in the scrap, lost, or eventually dumpled off on e-bay to count. The B&O is the best I have ever had. Very comfortable when the earpiece cover is utilized Makes for a snug yet comfortable fit. Make sure you don't throw the covers away by mistake. You get a few sets with the unit. They arrive in a small plastic bag that can easily to tossed with the packing. The set is very light weight and totally adjustable. After having my fill of plastic formed audio components, the feel of this ear set give one a sense of something that is a precision hand machined instrument. In other words, this is what you expect something that costs this much to look, work and feel like. I like to get what I pay for and this product did not dissapoint me. I'm picky and I like the feel and the fit. When not in use, they fold up and are stored in a hard durable magnetic hard case that doubles as the charger. I love this, I've trashed a few headsets by having them in a pocket unprotected. I always dreaded having to use my cell phone in the car. Always cumbersome to use and difficult to hear with all the surrounding noise. Now with this ear set, I actually enjoy using my cell on the road again. People can hear me perfectly and I have crystal clear reception from my end with this ear set. Lastly let me say this, you get what you pay for. If you buy this earset it'll be your last. I've spent over a grand on sets I no longer have. This unit has a 3 yr. warranty from a company that has a reputation for making things that work and replacing or fixing them without blinking an eye. My only regret is that now I have an itch to buy more of their products which could be an expense habit to scratch.
