I was in the market for a cheap pair of headphones to use in the office, and was not expecting the crispest quality from these headphones. However, I did expect the item to last a little longer than 6 months... Within the first two months the cheap adjustable fitting band broke off, and now the cable connections are already starting to break down so I get intermittent sound in the right earpiece.
These headphones were not subject to any extraorinarily harsh use either. They have remained hooked up to my computer from the moment I took them out of the package... They are either on my head or sitting on my desk. Simply put they're a poorly manufactured item that can't stand up to the most mundane uses.

I experienced the exact same problems as the previous reviewer--the headband piece snapped after a couple of months, and for whatever reason, there were sound problems in the right headphone, I had to adjust the cord a certain way to hear from it better.

these head phones are confortable and hold up well. my wife and i are over-the-road truckers and listen to xm radio and books on tape for many hours every day. the maxell hp2000 studio series headphones hold up better than any other low cost headphones we have found.
Too tight for a large head June 26, 2008
These are by far the worst headphones I have ever purchased. They do not fit a large head at all, and the top headband is too tight even for an average size head. In attempting to stretch the top headband to fit my head, the plastic snapped. This didn't matter, since they were headed to the garbage anyway in a few moments. And the sound was not good either (not nearly as good as the Maxell MP-1000). One more astonishing fact: the labels on the Left and Right earphones are reversed! They do not fit as labeled, but putting them on "reversed" is the correct way.
Instead, the Maxell HP-1000 are great on-ear headphones, with excellent sound and volume control. These are extremely light and comfortable and have space for wearing glasses. Too bad they are no longer available at amazon (they are just barely available elsewhere on the web).
 Surprisingly Good For The Price September 21, 2008
I bought these on a whim at a local audio supplier and after plugging them into my portable minidisc player I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Details in the music that had been buried by the murky top end and mid section of other headphones were jumping out, placement in the soundstage was more pronounced than with anything else I owned and the bass wasn't that artificially "throbbing" bass you often get with most budget headphones these days. I compared these to a pair of my Sennheiser PX 100s, my Sony MDR-V150s and my Koss R 80s and all of them could not match the Maxells for accuracy and detail. Plus the 8 foot chord, volume control AND the mono/stereo switch is another great plus.
The Downsides: The volume control is not very subtle. It is a slide and one little nudge one way or the other takes you from sound to nothing. I wish they used a wheel instead of a slide. The other is one other reviews have mentioned: If you have a huge head, you are not going to be able to wear these for more than a few hours at a time. But then again, that is a problem with a LOT of headphonese these days.
To sum up, you are not going to find a better pair of closed cans for under $20 with these features. If you want your music accurate without a ton of pushed up EQ in the bass you will love these. If you lean more towards classic rock, classical or jazz, you will not feel like you wasted a Jackson on these headphones. If you need bass that will drown out everything else in the music, you may want to try another set of headphones.
