 A Solid Piece of Audio Hardware August 26, 2005

If you are using multiple zones for an all room audio system like mine, you need to have strong hardware help you control the volume. The Phoenix Gold pieces are top-notch. If you are putting the knob into existing walls, make sure you take the controler with you to select the "old construction" power box which are the self-closing type. The controler is kind of deep and some in-wall boxes are kind of short in depth. Make sure you get the deep box. Hooking up the speaker leads is a snap and the overall sound quality that comes out is great.

The wire install is not the easiest if you are using a lower guage wire. It was difficult to keep the wires in when placing back in the wall.

Not a bad volume control; however, if you're using 16 guage wire or thicker, note that the connectors are not the easiest to work with.

This control works well and has a good feel to the volume control. There are small, smooth clicks at each setting. I found some others which have a harder feel and rougher feel when adjusting the volume. Price was great as well.
Tips for installing VMT-100 May 10, 2008

The tips below were suggested by a professional electrician and worked very well to give me a good looking installation.
As other reviewers mention, it is difficult to fit the wiring into a standard (even a deep type) old work wall box. I found it easy to cut off the rear two-thirds of the box with a hack saw, and use only the front portion as a frame. I also needed to file down the box reinforcement ribs to accommodate the height of the VMT-100.
One reviewer commented on the problem of the box cover plate not fitting flush to the wall over the VMT-100 mounting strap. I successfully compensated for this by [CAREFULLY-DON'T OVERDO] gouging out about 1/8 inch depth of the drywall behind the box tabs, so as to recess the front face of the box in the wall. Another helpful technique was to use a nipper tool to clip away the ears on the mounting strap and to narrow its neck portions, which makes the strap fit more flush against the junction box.
Regarding the difficulty of working 16-gauge wire into the connectors, I also found that stranded wire did not hold well, but that by first soldering the ends of each wire, the connections to the volume control became much more reliable.
