Excellent sound in such a small speaker! February 15, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My old KLH stereo speakers still sound great (I still get compliments from my guests on their excellent sound), but they are just so big, take up a lot of real estate in my house, and are very outdated in appearance- big and boxy with a cabinet covered in faux oak wood-looking "wall paper." So, I ran around town today looking for bookshelf speakers to free up some space on my floor and get with the 21st Century.
I listened to about 20 sets of bookshelf speakers (including the Boston Acoustics HS60) at Best Buy, Circuit City, and a local electronics store. Many of the bookshelf speakers that I observed were very tinny, did not have much bass at all, and couldn't handle a lot of power (they started sounding distorted after the volume was turned up). Some of the others that I heard were made by JBL, Sony, Bose, Polk, and Insignia ranging in price from $50 to $330 each. These Boston HS60 speakers had to be the best sound out of all the bookshelf speakers I listened to; even better than the ones that were much more expensive! HS60's had full bass, treble, and mid-range without sounding tinny at all, and they didn't sound distorted at all when the volume was turned up. I was particularly amazed at the bass and full, rich sound that came out of such small speakers. (The JBL "Monitor" bookshelf speakers were a close second, but still not as good as the HS60's.)
Much to my chagrin, my local Circuit City had none immediately in stock (must very popular!), and would have cost $149.99 each, plus sales tax. Well, like "they" say, "Things happen for a reason." When I got home after my speaker quest, I searched the Web for the HS60's, found much better deals online without my having to pay sales tax as an added price bonus, and ordered them promptly today. I can't wait for them to arrive!
If you are looking for a great speaker, either to compliment an existing sound system or to stand alone, these Boston Acoustics HS60's are an AWESOME choice!
