5 out of 5 stars Cheap Price - Great Sound   September 30, 2004

I looked into these Sony speakers because Consumer Reports raved about their sound and cheap price. CR was absolutely right on both counts. These solid speakers have cleaner, crisper sound than the $300-$400 speakers I was comparing them to. Some folks complain about the lack of bass, but I found that the bass was fine, considering that they're bookshelf speakers after all.
One caveat -- they're pretty big for a bookshelf, and in fact look more like low floor-standing speakers (put them on stands anyway to get them a little higher).

5 out of 5 stars Best speakers for under $100!!!   March 27, 2005

I own two pairs of these now. The first one was purchased after reading such a good review in Consumer Reports. The second one because I loved the first pair so much. One pair are the fronts and the other are my rears in my bedroom home theater. I must say, they produce a lot of sound for their size. Volume can be turned up quite a bit and they still sound crisp and clear. Vocals are clear, the highs aren't too tinny sounding, and the bass is decent although it could be deeper in some instances. Plus, the all black wood look they have looks very good and the grey mesh covers the ugly yellow speakers well cleaning the overall look of the speakers up. I had used a pair of Epicure speakers(which if you didn't know were great speakers in the 70's and 80's) and I have to say these sound a bit clearer and I get a fuller sound now. If you need a good pair of bookshelfs, get these you won't regret it!

2 out of 5 stars OK if you're about 12 years old...   May 3, 2005

My nephew got these for his birthday, and I couldn't help grimacing as he cranked up the volume while showing them off to me. Shrill and harsh with very thin midrange and muddy boomy bass---though I suppose if you're twelve years old it sounds better than a lousy little boombox.

It's too bad his parents didn't ask me for advice before buying these, for a hundred bucks you can get a much better speaker like the Polk R15 or especially the Fluance SV-6 (fluance dot com).

Sony, Kenwood, JVC, Panasonic, Pioneer---these are big names mainly because they spend a lot of money on advertising which is what you the consumer end up paying for rather than actual quality components or R&D. Their electronics are OK (the Pioneer is the best of the bunch) at the lowest end of the market but their speakers are fairly dismal.

My advice is, buy speakers from a company that makes only speakers, and buy a subwoofer from a company that makes only subwoofers!

3 out of 5 stars A good speaker for the money.   March 18, 2005

These are a good speaker for the money. Recently, I also purchased a pair of Polk R15 speakers to put in my bedroom. The Polks cost about the same as the Sony's but are much smaller. To be honest, I like the sound quality of the Polk's much better. I guess if you need a bigger speaker to fill a huge room, the Sony's would be adequate, but overall, I highly recommend getting the Polks. One final advantage: you can easily mount the Polks on the wall.

5 out of 5 stars Very very decent   January 19, 2005

I am no professional, or trained audiophile, but after reading reviews on these I purchsed them as I was replacing a shelf stereo with component system. The speakers made even the crappy little stereo sound good.

They sounded terrible in Best Buy, but it's because of the crappy speaker wire they use. I have it hooked up with 16 gauge copper with golden tip connectors, and they sound amazing.

They do not have the base of some other speakers out there, but I don't like to wake up my neighbors anyways. They sound CLEAR. no exaggerated bass, and no underpowerred bass. they sound just right.

So if you don't feel like spending $300 on Klipsch etc, buy a pair of these. They are awesone (an of course they are pretty much low floor speakers, I cannot imagine a shelf these would fit on)

2 days later: I finally hooked them up to SONY receiver (I bought a used STR-DE135) and they sound AWESOME. The right comination of all ranges, beautiful sound. Even though my whole setup is in one corner and I am in the other (along the same wall) of my HUGE living/dining/working room (long and narrow) with beautiful sound. Once more, confirmed, if you don't feel like spending $300 on Klipch and the-like, just pick a pair up, and try them at home. I assure you that even if you can return then you won't.

BTW look out for discounts on them. They sel for average of $99, but often go on sale here and there for $79 and lower (best Buy, B&H Photo) etc...
