Amazon.com Product Description
Compact and imminently affordable, Sony's 2-way SS-MB150H bookshelf speakers are engineered to extract all of the detail that new high-resolution audio formats can provide. The speakers each employ a 5.25-inch Kevlar/HOP driver with a 1-inch Nano-Fine balanced-dome tweeter. Nano-Fine tweeters extend the speakers' frequency response well beyond the 20 kHz limit of CD audio, all the way out to 50 kHz--perfect for today's high-resolution music formats like Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio. The Nano-Fine design makes each tweeter extremely still and light--ideal properties for a tweeter. Use a single pair for stereo or buy 2 for use with surround sound listening.

The SS-MB150H's ported (bass-reflex) cabinets let the drivers move more air, extending the speakers' bass response down to a respectable, if not exactly "slamming," 80 Hz. For home theater use or for fuller bass response, consider using the speakers in conjunction with a stand-alone powered subwoofer.

Sony's speakers use precision crossover assemblies to ensure blending while recreating a seamless sound stage. Today's high-resolution stereo and discrete surround formats can reproduce the same sound out of all speakers. If a variance in drivers, crossover, or materials occurs, the pitch and surround illusion can suffer. Sony speakers are designed using matching driver complements and crossovers to ensure blending from left to right and from front to rear.

The Kevlar fiber cone material offers an ideal mix of strength and low weight. Traditional driver materials must increase mass to provide greater amounts of rigidity, but these materials tend to be slow and inaccurate. Kevlar, combined with Sony's HOP (Highly Oriented Polyolefin), delivers extremely high strength and low mass. This allows for high power handling (up to 120 watts per channel) and ideal frequency response. HOP is a proprietary speaker-cone material offering high strength, low weight, and low resonance, contributing to the speaker's excellent transient response, high power handling, and flat frequency response.

The balanced-dome tweeter represents a Sony refinement of the classic dome tweeter, which places the voice coil inside the tweeter's circumference for superb dispersion and reduced distortion than traditional tweeters.

The SS-MB150H speakers are magnetically shielded to allow distortion-free placement near TVs or computer monitors, and they come with 2 lengths (8.2 feet each) of speaker cable to simplify hookup with your integrated amplifier or surround receiver.

What's in the Box
Two speakers, speaker cable (8.2 feet x 2 lengths), a user's manual, and warranty information.

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Speakers   January 3, 2005

These are great soundings little speakers for the price. The frequency range sounds fairly flat through it's advertised range 80MHZ-50KHZ. The highs don't roll off at 20KHZ like some cheaper speakers due to the extended range tweeter. This is important if you listen to any piano or electronic type music that produce frequencies in that range.

The bass frequency response is good for it's size, but you will want to add a subwoofer if these are your main speakers. They do not sound good if you turn up the bass and play them too loudly. For surrounds though, these speakers are exellent. The larger diameter woofer will allow you to low pass the frequncy being fed to these speakers at a lower range, which is essential for creating a richer surround effect. Too small of a speaker necessitates crossing the bass over to the sub at too high of a frequency for my tastes, and in addition to ruining the localization effect can make male voices sound too boomy without some tweaking. I've never been a fan of those all-in-one systems like Bose with the array of tiny satellites and single bass module, besides being way over-priced, they just don't sound as good to me as larger speakers do. And while even these little Sony speakers can't go toe-to-toe with a larger bookshelf or tower, you can create a pretty nice system for a whole lot cheaper than Bose or comparable brand by adding a few of these together with a sub.

One caveat, these speakers are not pre-made to wall mount. They have no keyhole or mounting screw made into the back. If you wish to mount them on the ceiling or wall, you will have to drill into the back of the speaker with wood or metal tapping screws to attach a mount. It's not really a big deal, but some people may find that intimidating. It would be nice if Sony would have added that feature; however, you can always put them on stands.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality for the Money   August 10, 2005

I needed some small speakers for an apartment and am so glad I found these. I went to Best Buy and tested speakers for about an hour. These were the best speakers for the price which is why they were probably all sold out. I checked out Amazon, and their price was ten bucks cheaper than Best Buy - plus the shipping was free! You can't go wrong with the crystal clear highs, no hissing, and surprising bass from these little speakers...definitely two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth the money. Less than $50 well spent!   February 28, 2006

I hooked these up as the rear or effects speakers. I find them to be way superior to the ones that came with my set up and better than most that I've seen recently in the stores for twice the price. As effects speakers, you absolutely won't go wrong. I wouldn't shy from using a pair with a smaller "book shelf" system as the front pair either.

Paired with Sony's SS-MB350H 8" 3-Way 120-Watts Bookshelf Speakers, I am very pleased and plan to add a Sony sub woofer soon. My wife and I fought over using larger speakers and this was the compromise that seemed to work.

3 out of 5 stars OK for the price   June 2, 2006

I paired these with a 10" Athena sub to replace some very old Boston Acoustics A150 three ways I bought back in the 80's. Well, I got what I paid for. These are functional speakers, but there is no clarity. When I originally bought my A150's 20 years ago, I compared the Boston Acoustic 2 way (A100) to the 3 way and noticed a vocal clarity difference in the 150's. Well, I just lost it. These little speakers have crisp tweeters, but the pseudo-woofer just can't reproduce midrange elements (vocal, piano, etc). I'll keep these speakers since they are pretty cheap and can be used elsewhere. Now I need to find some similar sized speakers that will bring back the vocal clarity I just lost. Guess I need to get a crowbar and pry open my wallet. Or, honestly, go to a local store and do a listen test. That's the only way to do an honest comparison. I wonder if I can find a little pair of 3 ways...

4 out of 5 stars Good as Surround Speakers   December 1, 2004

These speakers don't hit the low lows but they work well for surround speakers and for 60 bucks it's not a bad deal. Throw in a sub with them and you could have yourself a full range system.
