Excellent Value October 1, 2007 57 out of 61 found this review helpful
First of all, I can't stand it when people rate decent products with 1 star. This product can be misleading, but is still a great value. Rating this product at 1 star because there are better, more expensive receivers out there is just foolish. This product is great... for the price.
Good luck finding a receiver at this price that has this many inputs and this feature set. No audio on the HDMI out? Who cares! The audio is supposed to go through the receiver anyway! And for the guy who says this isn't good for the XBOX 360... hook it into the SAT input. That's component video and optical audio. What's the problem? I'm pretty sure no xbox 360 game supports 1080p yet anyway, so this is perfectly alright.
One nice feature about this receiver is that it comes with a special microphone that hooks into the front. If you place the microphone near where you would normally be sitting, the receiver will adjust the speaker output to optimize the surround sound.
All the negative reviews I've seen here are unjustified. This is a great product for the price. You will not find another receiver in this price range that compares. I'm very happy with it... now all I need are some decent speakers and a powered sub.
Good value, but not for XBox 360 July 16, 2007 29 out of 33 found this review helpful
The physical quality of the receiver is OK. The menus are ultra primitive but fairly functional. If you have a certain arrangement of hardware, this may be a great deal for you.
But for your surround sound, it is misleading about the 2 optical, 1 coax connections, and how they work with the component video in options. Basically, you get this:
SAT: component video + optical audio DVD: component video + coax audio VID2: HDMI video + optical audio
This is not flexible. If your hardware doesn't fit into this arrangement, this is not the unit for you.
XBox 360 owners have good reason to not like this arrangement. XBox 360 only uses component video + optical audio, so it won't work as either "DVD" or "VID2."
If that works for you, then the sound quality is acceptable, and the video passthrough is nice--I was previously having to switch inputs with my TV remote, which was very tedious. This makes an acceptable driver for a low-cost arrangement with smaller speakers.
This is definitely a low-end receiver, though, and maxes out at 1080i. If you are working with 1080p players and TVs, you'll need to spend more than this.
Misleading November 26, 2007 10 out of 25 found this review helpful
I just got this unit and must say that I am disappointed. It maybe because I was expecting it fully decode hdmi audio instead of having another optical in for the same source. So when I connect my PS3 I can not listen to full uncompressed audio in LPCM which is available only in hdmi. If you have only optical audio to take care of, you will be find with this receiver. But if you are looking at it just because it has "HDMI", beware and read the fine prints.
Piece of Crap September 20, 2007 8 out of 19 found this review helpful
A co-worker of mine bought this receiver and had me come over to hook everything up. He got it because he wanted to eliminate as many wires as possible. Well come to find out the HDMI only does video, NOT audio. Also like someone else pointed out you cannot change any of the audio inputs so you are stuck with only one option. I would recommend spending a little extra money on something better, which should not be hard to find!
Great Price 4 A Great Start Up Surround Sound System !!! April 7, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2HKNSEZ5Y3ZMW Well I have a Playstation 3 and this receiver sys has hdmi capabilities, yet it can only output a display through hdmi and I had to hook up a fiber optical cable to the surround sound box. That's not all bad for the Price it's still an effective set up, optically is Just a step down from hdmi and yes you wont get the full liner on the ps3, But before I bought this set up I was just running it on my 42 inch 1080p TV with the Stock speakers.... That was not good sound at All, So this is a Great improvement cause I didn't have the funds to spend on a $400-$500 sys that outputs hdmi sound...So this works and Sounds Great compared to the TV speakers that I had it on. Last, the BlueRay player on the Ps3 Shows Beautifully on my 1080p TV and now the sound actually Makes the movie Pop out more along with better Game play. This is a Great Starter System For the Price!! So BUY IT :)
On this Sys 5.1 is shown As 3/2.1 = 3speakers in front / 2 in back .1 for sub which is still 5.1
