Product Description The AS-F2 is a remarkable achievement in terms of engineering. It combines the bass output and high sound pressure level output of pro audio speakers, with the refinement and sound quality of audiophile speakers, all at an extremely competitive price. Designing a quality speaker system isnât difficult when the skyâs the limit for price, but given the aggressive goals of the athena team, the engineering staff had their hands full. They succeeded on all counts, and the result is a true full range speaker system with exceptional sound, and modern cosmetics.
Amazon.com Product Description Combining the bass output and high sound pressure of pro audio speakers with the refinement and sound quality of audiophile home models, the Athena AS-F2.2 floorstanding speaker makes an outstanding addition to a stereo or home theater system. The speaker--which is packaged singly--is equipped with dual 8-inch injection-molded polypropylene cone woofers with rubber surrounds that handle the lows and mids, along with a 1-inch Teteron dome tweeter that reproduces amazingly crisp, detailed highs. The drivers team up to produce an impressive 35 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response that sounds terrific on its own but also blends beautifully with other speakers in a surround sound configuration. The AS-F2.2 excels because of its elite cabinet design and quality driver construction. The speaker is made of medium-density fiberboard (MDF), a dense, consistent wood material that ensures both great sound and minimum resonance. The MDF front baffle is also specially shaped to improve the dispersion and highlight the speaker aesthetics. The woofers, meanwhile, are built for high performance, high efficiency, durability, and--of course--topnotch sound. The cones' injection-molded polypropylene stays rigid during the most extreme excursion, yet is light enough to enable fast movement, which means an accurate and tight bass response. Plus, the rubber surrounds are the best available, and provide quiet woofer movement and durability. The Teteron tweeter, however, is the speaker's focal point. Arguably the most important element of a high-performance speaker, the tweeter disperses loud, clear, and accurate highs in a wide window from its unique faceplate. The durable synthetic Teteron material is also specially contoured to reduce distortion and fit into the custom-designed bezel, which amplifies and optimizes the tweeter's dispersion. Teteron is even impervious to moisture, so it won't change over time, nor does it have any inherent ringing problems--unlike the tweeters built into many conventional home theater speakers. And the best part is that Athena uses the Teteron tweeter in all its Audition series models, making it easy to create a seamless sounding home theater system. Additional audio specifications range from a crossover point of 2.0 kHz to a sensitivity rating of 93 dB to power handling of 250 watts. And as with all quality speakers, the AS-F2.2 boasts sturdy gold-plated five-way binding post terminals that work with audiophile-grade cable up to 12 gauge in thickness. Want to use standard pins or banana jacks instead of bare wire? No problem. All this in an attractive black ash cabinet that looks great next to modern flat-panel displays and traditional tube TVs. Though the AS-F2.2 works with almost any home theater system, it sounds particularly good when teamed with other speakers from Athena's Audition series. All Audition speakers are timbre matched for the best possible performance and are magnetically shielded to protect the onscreen image. In other words, you can place the AS-F2.2 near the TV without distorting the picture. In addition, listeners can locate the speaker close to any wall thanks to the orientation of the bass vent, which is purposely placed on the front of the cabinet. Finally, the speaker--which measures 9.5 by 41.5 by 15.5 inches (W x H x D)--is protected by a five-year warranty on parts and labor. What's in the Box One AS-F2.2 speaker, user's manual.

Athena AS-F2.2 September 10, 2005 9 out of 19 found this review helpful
After reading the review of the orignal AS-F2 in Stereophile I decided to check these out. I saw a great price on Amazon so I said why not. To be fair the speakers are still in the 50 hour break in period recommended by the owners manual and I have not finished tweeking my system to optimize the sound. That having been said these are good speakers for the money. As advertised they deliver a lot of pretty tight bass. Right now I find them a little harsh in the upper ranges but that could be because of the things I mentioned above. I am running them with a ADCOM GFA-5400, and an Acurus RL-11. The primary sources I have been using are an NAD C-660, an Acurus ACD-11 and a Polk xrt-12.
Great bang for the buck February 12, 2007 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I replaced my JBL bookshelf speakers with the Athena F2.2 floor models and couldn't be happier. We moved into a new home 10 months ago and we wanted to go with a floor speaker to accommodate the larger room. After listening to other brands (JBL, Klipsch, etc) at the local stores and researching speakers online, I decided to take a chance on the Athenas, even though I wasn't able to audition them. I've had them for 8 months now and I'm pleased very with my decision. As has been mentioned, they are a little harsh sounding at first, but after the break-in period, they really smoothed out. I find that they give me a very true sound that doesn't vary much as I change the volume - very even sounding is the best way I can put it. I'm still using a JBL sub, but I'm running it pretty low these days. I don't need it nearly as much as I did with the old bookshelf speakers.
I highly recommend you do some research online before you buy. There are better speakers out there, but I seriously doubt you'll find anything better at this price point. Take a chance on the Athenas. Follow the break-in instructions. You won't be disappointed.
Couldn't be happier with my Athenas February 11, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
In my 5.1 surround system I have 2 F2's, a C1, 2 B1s and a Sunfire sub all driven by a Panny XR55. The sound is simply amazing and IMO as good as the Martin Logans at Tweeters. The F1s have great detail, imaging, and there's no coloration. With the Panny I can drive these monsters to painful levels without a whimper of distortion. The sound is transparent, clean, and very clear. Anyone contemplating these towers would probably be sold once they hear the battle sounds from "Gladiator" or the subtle guitar frets from the Eagles, "Hotel California" ( "Hell Freezes Over" -DVD ). Diana Krall's "Live in Paris" sounds so alive on these speakers I feel she's in the room with me. These are massive towers (deeper than they are wide), quite imposing but handsome never-the-less. To say I'm pleased with them is a huge understatement.
Great sound at a great price September 10, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought these without ever hearing them. I had read a few reviews and they were recomended by a couple of knowledgeable friends so I took a chance. I'm glad I did, these speakers sound as good as speakers costing $1500 or more. They sounded a little edgy right out of the box and the bass response was a little light but as they break in (50 - 100 hours)the sound becomes more refined. Clean, crisp highs, detailed mid range and tight, fast bass. Imaging just keeps getting better. They're not completely broken in yet but they're still worth twice what I paid for them. I think I may need a new preamp to really explore their capabilities.
Great Speakers at a Great Price! August 25, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've owned these speakers (as part of an Athena 5.1 speaker package) for over 3 years. I've been extremely pleased with the performance I've received. These speakers are attractive, and do a great job at both audio and home theater playback. For their price these speakers can't be touched. Of course, there are also plenty of professional reviews of these speakers online, all very glowing.
