4 out of 5 stars Big things in small packages!   November 23, 2008

When I set out to buy my home theater in a box I set out to Best Buy to get demos of all of the latest and greatest toys. When I told the sales person my requirements (blu-ray disc player, wireless rear speakers, preferably Sony) this was the model he brought me to. Not being too impressed with the size of the speakers (if fact, I told him they were very cute), I quickly mentioned I wanted something with power.

What can I say? After the demo, I was blown away. I thought it was some kind of trick and Sony had pulled the wool over my eyes to get me to drop a thousand big ones. I went to every tiny speaker and covered it with my hand to check as to how much sound was coming out. Trust me, there is power in those golf ball sized speakers. I was so impressed, bought it immediately.

When I got it home it was like Christmas, and I had it out of the box in less than 5 minutes. All of the speakers are color coded, so it's really idiot proof. Because I didn't mount anything to the wall it took me a little under 30 minutes to set everything up. The two rear speakers are wireless, but not really. They connect to a receiver box that you keep in the back of the room so there is still wires. When I turned everything on, I did the quick setup and synced my 57" Bravia TV and haven't looked back!

So here are my pros and cons of this system:

pros-
* very easy to set up
* small speakers don't interfere with my decor or overwhelm my small apartment.
* network updates.
* Blu-Ray 2.0
* S-AIR technology (wireless rear speakers)
* two HDMI Inputs
* Aesthetically speaking, it's beautiful.

cons-
* price, you can get a PS3 and a traditional home theater for cheaper, separately.(this is why I gave it a 4 stars instead of 5)
* the rear speakers aren't truly wireless, so little room for adjustments with out wires running up your walls.
* because it is HTIB you can't have the versatility you would with a normal receiver.

1 out of 5 stars EPIC FAIL!   December 7, 2008

There are some nice things to say about this setup.
- Blu-ray picture and motion are great.
- BRAVIA integration is sweet (I don't think I explicitly did anything but one remote controls the TV and the Blu-ray player).
- For the most part, it is incredibly easy to set up.

However, there is a glaring problem with this unit. The rear wireless speakers don't work. And, btw, there is no way to just plug them in directly.

It took several hours of fiddling around to get the S-AIR (Sony proprietary wireless technology) receiver configured. There is a missing step in the manual that, during pairing, you must push in the "pairing" button on the back of the sub-unit. After crossing that hurdle I was able to pair the units and receive a message that I have successfully paired the wireless sub-unit. I moved on to the test the configuration. I the prodceeded to the test tone audio setup feature to test the configuration. The sub-unit cannot even hold its wireless connection to the base unit long enough for the test tones to go around all the speakers more than once (maybe 30 seconds). Sometimes the rear speakers will tone, sometimes they will not. Comically, they even cut out mid-tone a few times. My attempts at success included moving the base station and the wireless sub-unit so that they were directly within line-of-site with each other. I also attempted to download a software update (for which there was none). For me, the wireless feature was a key component in my decision to purchase this HTiB. Sadly, back in the box it goes.

It appears that I am not the only one experiencing this problem. At the time of this writing, there are not a great number of reviews of this product. However, a quick Google search should turn up other commiserators.

5 out of 5 stars Every thing we needed   December 6, 2008

This has been a great product, it has everything we need all in one unit, it sounds wonderful for such a small unit. The Blueray discs come up much faster then our friends and family's units. Average time for a disc to come up is 15-30 seconds. My friends wait up to 2 min for their unit that is not a sony.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent All-In-One Blu-Ray Surround System   December 14, 2008

I purchased the Sony BDV-IS1000 after researching a lot of Blu-Ray HTIB systems from all the manufacturers. I was initially skeptical about the sound quality from such small speakers and concerned about the reliability of wireless rear speakers. I am glad to say that after purchasing this system and setting it up (in less than 30 minutes) that not only does the S-Air system work flawlessly, but the sound is incredible. Friends are amazed at the sound quality after they find my speakers. I have the system in a solid wood entertainment center with an open front shelf for the Sony. I have had absolutely no problems with the S-air system connecting to the receiver in the rear of my living room (approx. 15 feet). The video quality from the blu-ray player is amazing as well.

I have also connected this system to my wireless network using the Linksys wireless gaming system adapter and have had no problems downloading the BD Live update.

I highly recommend this sytem.

5 out of 5 stars Great SYstem, Easy to Setup!   December 30, 2008
Thirty minutes from the time we opened the box to when we settled down to watch the first DVD on it. Great sound. No problems whatsoever setting up wireless speaker.
