5 out of 5 stars Beauty, Power, Affordability   September 22, 2008

I bought this Onkyo system without hearing it. A friend's recommendation and the brand name itself made me feel comfortable (enough) to take a chance with it.

Amazon delivered it using the free prime trial for free in 2 days (which was awesome).

When I got the box I was excited, and it was a lot larger than I anticipated. I believe this was mainly due to the size of the subwoofer. It is a large, legitimate, real powered subwoofer. It was not a cheap sub put in most of the HTIBs. The speakers were also solid, and look great with their high gloss case. I've purchased HTIBs before, but this had the feel of a purely component system. That is to say, everyone who has seen/heard it, thinks that the speakers, sub, and receiver were separate purchases.

Excited to get it up and running with my new Samsung ln52a650 and sony bdps350, I quickly got to work setting it up.

Here is where I met my only frustration with the system. The speaker wires (included in the box), were color coded and matched the corresponding ports in each speaker, and the receiver. However, after spending about an hour or so positioning all speakers to my liking--I turned on the receiver and NOTHING!

Sound only came from my front right speaker. I figured something was wrong with the receiver--so went to Circuit City and bought the same one as a stand alone. When I got home and plugged in the new receiver, I quickly realized that this one had the same "issue."

Long story short, it turned out the pretty color coordinated speaker wire was faulty. I bought a round of high quality speaker wire for an extra $20 and have never looked back.

I had my bluray player and cable going in using the 2 toslink (optical) inputs.

The sound produced from this system is amazing. For the price point ($275 on amazon), it also has 2 optical inputs--which i was unable to find elsewhere. Plenty of inputs, included ipod connectivity--with the ability to use remote control, and lots of power.

This may sound stupid, but I use my girlfriend as a test subject. She is completely uninterested in all of my toys. When we sat down last night to watch a movie, SHE could not stop talking about how she felt like she was in a real movie theater.

After owning this system for about 3 weeks--this is what inspired me to write a quick review.

I would recommend this to any of my friends.

Do not be fooled by the people at pushing HD audio formats. While they sound great--they arent NEEDED to create a great home theater experience.

If you do not have the wallet, this is a great system--which can be later upgraded with the purchase of an HD audio receiver capable of using those formats. I plan to do this at some point in the future when the prices have become more affordable.

great system, you will NOT be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A surprisingly powerful, multi-purpose HTIB   September 20, 2008

I recently purchased this system new from Amazon, to complete my low-budget-yet-high-quality home theatre setup.

I had heard lots of good things about Onkyo's 5.1 systems, but this newer model had very little review-wise that I could find. However, it seemed to be very similar to the previous generation, only with bigger speakers and an included Ipod dock. That and a good price point were enough to pique my interest.

On the whole I'm very pleased with the system. The speakers can sound a little tinny, but the sheer power and bass these little guys are outputting is impressive. I live in a rather modest apartment, and this system is a good fit for my space...in fact, it is probably too powerful, as the powered subwoofer has literally window-shaking strength, which I didn't expect from a small system.

Primarily I'm using the system for 5.1 sound, from a digital optical signal from my Oppo DV-981 Player, and in that application it does admirably. But I also wanted the interactivity with my Ipod, and thankfully it sounds pretty decent with standard stereo sound as well.

I would certainly recommend this system as a high quality, low-budget choice for your home. My goal was to build a home theatre for under $1,000, and with this system and a used Optoma HD-70 I did the whole thing for about 950. Altogether, it's an excellent setup and, for the money, is hard to beat.

i have had no problems with this item and highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good system fairly cheep. the base is so good that in a dorm with cement walls i had complaints due to the sub shaking their room. I am sold on Onkyo and will probably purchase more from them in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Good system except for subwoofer   November 11, 2008

I set this system up and enjoyed the great sound but the subwoofer made a humming noise. Onkyo said that it needed repair and sent me to a certified technician. For me, that is an hour drive. The tech said the power transformer was busted but they couldn't get a new part from Onkyo. So I called Onkyo again and they said to return the entire system to Amazon, which I did. After a couple more hours of driving and packing it up. It seems there is a quality control issue at Onkyo so I will stay away from their products in the future. The tech recommended Bose, Yamaha, and JBL/Infinity.

4 out of 5 stars Well Rounded and Affordable   October 3, 2008
This is my first 5.1 reciever and so far I am happy with my purchase. My first impressions were that everything was larger than expected, the sub sits about a foot and a half off of the floor. I had planned to use my tv to recieve hdmi from a dvd player and an xbox 360 and then pass the audio through a single optical cable to the onkyo. However I have just learned my model toshiba lcd does not pass an hd audio signal from any incoming sources. So I have a few extra cables run but not a big deal.

The Ipod dock works great, you can turn on the ipod and navigate through it's menu's using the onkyo's remote. The FM antenna wire that is provided is garbage, but the tuner works perfectly and picks up stations I didn't know existed.

The sound from digital sources is great and there is no distortion throughout the volume range. The sub does not sound as powerful as I expected but I will give is some time to break in. Once you configure the speaker settings everything sounds balanced and matched, which it should they are basically all the same speaker. There is not much of a usable equalizer just basic treble and bass adjustments. I don't notice it much watching movies but for music it's hard to fine tune sound.

Everything was simple and straightforward and most important it sounds great. A nice value for a small or mid sized room great for watching movies. It takes the guesswork out of matching up components and speakers.
