4 out of 5 stars SC-HT740 Sounds great, will update more later   April 25, 2006

Just purchased it yesterday, this is our first HT experience. We are thrilled by the surround sound so far, I am in the process of testing all options, will update the review as well as star rating as I see more.
So far, the Pros are:
1) excellent surround sound
2) special Hbass for additional bass is awesome
3) plays dvds,cds,mp3s very well
4) interfaced quickly to my Philips TV, so can use the same remote for tv too. Now can watch TV shows/movies on home theater!
5) set-up with manual was quick and easy
6) aesthetically my wife loves the tower-front speakers
7) 5-disc changer is such that you can put CDs/DVDs in the unoccupied trays without interruption current CD/DVD play.

So far, the Cons are:
1) does not play mpegs
2) does not play vcds burnt with divx
3) remote has a gazillion options, will take time to master it!
4) Speaker wires which come with the HT are not great, will definitely need replacement down the line.

New addition:
Pros
1) Plays jpegs very well, it scans through your data disc and displays all jpeg files as a slideshow. Files not recognised are skipped. Using "playlist" on the remote, is like using windows explorer on the TV screen for selecting specific files.

4 out of 5 stars The SC-HT740 is a great home theater   November 1, 2006

I have been using a Panasonic SC-HT740 5 DVD Home Theater System for about nine months and I have been very satisfied. I enjoyed my home unit enough to recently purchase a second SC-HT740 for work. Here are seven benefits and drawbacks.

benefits:
1) The sound quality is excellent when playing CDs, CD-Rs, DVDs, DVD-Rs and the radio.
2) The bass can be adjusted to multiple levels.
3) The TV's audio signal can be played through the system.
4) The theater can be expanded to use a second room speaker. On one of my units, I use the SH-FX80 "Wireless Second Room Audio Speaker." It has issues, but it's worth it. On my other system, I use the SH-FX60 "Rear Wireless Upgrade Kit." It works very well.
5) The unit holds five discs.
6) The system will accept an ipod.
7) The unit is physically attractive.

drawbacks:
1) The remote control has so many features that it is difficult to learn and use.
2) There is no way to access different video angles. My old DVD remote had a button to select different angles for compatible discs.
3) Other than the bass level, there is no equalizer to micro-manage the audio signal.
4) The remote does not work with my Sony television.
5) The SH-FX60 (wireless rear speaker kit) and SH-FX80 (second room speaker) can not be used on the same unit simultaneously.
6) The system is not compatible with PAL or SACD discs.
7) I often get wavy lines on the screen for about five minutes. Customer service told me to change the yellow video cable. I've used three different cables (one of which was gold plated) and the problem persists. Instead of the cable, it may have something to do with the main unit.

2 out of 5 stars Good system, but no optical input!   July 20, 2006

This is really a nice system, but the one drawback is a huge one. There is no optical cable input. Why Panasonic neglected to add this is a mystery. They also do not have an optical input on their higher end systems. After purchasing this system, I had to return it.

If having a good system with adequate stereo sound is what you want, this would be a good purchase. If you are an audiophile looking for a true surround sound theater experience, this system is NOT for you.

I would recommend that you instead look at the 8 speaker ONKYO Home Theater System 7.1 HTS780B. For around $50-$100 more than this system you can get a state of the art 7.1 system. The Onkyo is 1000 watts and sounds awesome. It will also give you a cutting edge system that is actually ahead of the technology curve. It doesn't come with an integrated DVD player like the Panasonic, but you probably already have a DVD player anyway, right?

1 out of 5 stars Panasonic has unresolved Error "F61" issues with this system   January 12, 2007

BEWARE OF THIS PRODUCT! As soon as I put the system together and tried to put in a DVD, the display showed "F61" and the player would not close. Apparently, my problem is far from unique . According to a internet search on "F61", many people have experienced the this error code with their panasonic home theater units (and other Panasonic produsts), which indicates a faulty or shorted out power supply. Every time the unit powers on I get the error message. Sometimes the F61 problem takes a year to show up, so I guess I am lucky that my system was broken from the beginning-at least I can return it. Check them out for yourselves with the Better Business Bureau - Panasonic has an "Unsatisfactory" rating based on excessive UNRESOLVED product quality and repair complaints. From what I've read so far Panasonic is not helpful in trying to resolve this. I returned my system to Amazon, and will be purchasing a different brand.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent system   August 18, 2006

This is a quality home theater system, a lot of sound for the money. It is easy to use and interfaces well with my Samsung DLP. Another key element of the Panasonic system is the option of a wireless unit to the rear speakers. For about another $100, it is really worth the money -- no wires to run under carpet or through the attic. Mine works flawlessly.
