Superb sound in a small package... August 1, 2007 98 out of 102 found this review helpful
I just picked this up and it's a very nice shelf system. It's not going to shake the walls at high volume, but if you were looking for that much power, you wouldn't be looking at a shelf system to begin with. The true test of quality sound comes at the lower end of the volume knob. Here is where this unit excels. No hissing or crackling noise and the bass is rich and pure and sounds dynamite. I played a burn job from mp3 files and I was stunned at just how good this unit really does sound! Mind you, this system does have a wee bit more power than comparable units, so you can crank the volume up loud enough for most people's tastes and there is no sound distortion at the high end, either. It's also pretty easy to mount on the wall, if so desired. It does come with a stand, which suffices well enough, if you don't feel like drilling into your walls. I only have one complaint and it's a minor one. While the speakers attach to the unit as seen in the pic, Philips should have also enabled you to be able to mount the speakers onto a wall, apart from the unit, to achieve a much better stereo sound. I have a speaker on the nightstand on each side of the bed and when I lie down to relax with some good tunes, it sounds simply fantastic. So, sound like a good deal? It is, and for a great price, too! Just make sure you have some extra speaker wire handy, as there's not that much attached to each speaker to begin with. Trust me on this. For the price being asked, in my opinion, sound byte for sound byte, this is one of the best shelf units out there. I listened to a lot of small systems in the up to and a little above the one hundred and fifty level and this system won hands down every time. A nice added bonus feature is that it was also the most eye appealing, too!
What does that say?? September 3, 2007 24 out of 36 found this review helpful
Two complaints:
I mounted this on the wall in my infant's room (so that she can't reach it and pull it off her dresser) but now I can't read the darned screen!
And so much for "Sense and simplicity" ... this is the first stereo I've owned, in over 10 years, that I had to read the instruction manual for.
Aside from that ... it's sleek, sexy, and has a great sound quality. A good buy for the price. Just, make sure you can read the screen before you drill holes in your wall. :)
You get what you pay for January 23, 2008 19 out of 19 found this review helpful
I bought this after reading 2 reviews on Amazon which were favorable. It skipped CDs after 4 months in my office. Sounds great, looks great... but rate it zero for durability. The repair or shipping for repairs will probably cost at least half the buying price. Disappointed.
Not a bookshelf system January 5, 2008 16 out of 20 found this review helpful
Great looking, excellent sound. But not a bookshelf system. Unless your bookshelves are at least 18" high since the front door slides up to open. Mine are 12" high and the front door opens, hits the shelf above, and closes. Grrr.....
Good But................. November 21, 2007 15 out of 25 found this review helpful
This product arrived on time and in reasonable shape. Sound quality is good. It does have a relatively modest output ceiling , so if your going to want to turn up the volume beyond loud, this will not work.
My trouble with this unit is that the electronic door which slides up and down sounds like a cheap train set. The clicking and whirling sound that it makes is amazingly low-tech and cheap. The door occasionally gets stuck. Although all of these problems do not change the tuner or CD playback, they do turn a sleek, hi-tech stereo into a garage/ woodshed unit not suitable for your office or living room.
My recommendation is to spend the money wisely on another product. I will be returning mine soon, when or if I can figure out how to do that with an opened electronic item from Amazon. The shipping costs back to NY are almost 1/2 the cost of the unit (35.00)
