5 out of 5 stars Best portable speakers under $80...honest.   October 28, 2004

I just finished buying/borrowing several sets of travel speakers, including the RCA amplified folding speakers, the Sony TS33 speakers, the Sony TS55 folding speakers, and the Sonic Impact SI-5. I also have a couple inexpensive non-powered speakers for portable audio. The RPSPT70 beats all of them, hands down.

The speakers are a little larger than I like, about the size of an older PDA, but they are nowhere near as big as the SI-5s. They Sony T33 is significantly smaller, while the TS55s are about the same size.

The sound, though, is what really distinguishes the Panasonics. Sadly, you are not going to get any sort of realistic bass out of small speakers. But the Panasonics make up for it by providing excellent amplifier power (at the expense of battery life) and crisp sound. The drums and snares sound tight, which helps compensate for the absence of any realistic low end. They will definitely play louder than any of the other systems I've mentioned.

It helps if you have a good sound source with adjustable bass and treble. You can add a bit of bass to help overcome the speakers' natural deficiency. You probably won't have to add any treble, since they are pretty bright as they are. Don't be surprised when you find that you only have to turn your unit up to 3/4 the volume level as with other speakers to achieve the same sound levels.

In comparison, I found that the TS33s were capable, although with weak bass and low volume, but with very sturdy construction in a much smaller physcial package. The TS55s had better sound, but were not as good overall as the RPSPT70s, though they cost more than twice as much. The Sonic Impact SI-5s were just plain dogs. They came with a nice external amp (which sounds much better if you buy some of those small, unamplified computer speakers for it) and useful cables, but the speakers themselves are very anemic. Since they have no enclosure, you get the tinny sound of a free-floating diaphragm...with virtually no volume and absolutely no midrange or bass.

If you are considering the SI-5s, do yourself a favor and spend the extra $10 for the Panasonics. If you are considering the Sonys, save a few bucks and buy the Pansonics. You will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkably good! And at a fantastic price.   January 18, 2004

This is an unbelievably good set of wireless speakers... excellent for a hotel room or any other travel situation that precludes a boombox. The size is smaller than a paperback book, and they weigh next-to-nothing.

I had purchased a similar item from Creative (the "TravelSound") that was TERRIBLE!, and they were twice the price of these Panasonics. (Perhaps I just got a defective unit, but the Creatives distorted the music horribly even at low volume.) The Panasonic RP-SPT70 sounds excellent, for both treble and bass, even at the CD player's highest volume setting... no distortion whatsoever. Obviously, there won't be any deep bass, but what you get is pure and satisfying.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars These Speakers will blow you away!....literaly!   January 26, 2005

I was looking for some speakers to play with my IPod, and someone recommended the Panasonic Folding Travel Speakers (RPSPT70).Based on all of the reviews, i was confident that these speakers were what i was looking for, and i was right. The sound quality is amazaing. In one review, someone said that there is a humming noise on very low volume, but i did not notice this on my speakers. Also, some reviews said that the speakers come with an AC adaptor...the ones bought off of Amazon do not.
Pros:
-Very compact
-Excellent sound quality
-Decent Bass
-Good Volume
-VERY VERY CHEAP!!
Cons:
-The cord is very short
-The speaker's stand is small, and they fall over is the cord is slightly pulled
-the volume is controlled from the music player, and not the speakers.

Overall these speakers have amazing sound quality for being so tiny, and cheap. Do not be skeptical in buying these. They are worth every Cent!

4 out of 5 stars Nice sound out of compact speakers   November 12, 2006

I bought these speakers to use with my Sansa e260 MP3 player. I considered other brands (which were more expensive) but decided on these after reading the reviews.

They are very easy to use. You simply plug the cord into your MP3 player's headphone jack and flip on the power switch on the speakers. You control the volume of the speakers through your MP3 player (there is no volume control or sound adjustments on these speakers).

The sound quality is really nice, especially for such a small set of speakers. When folded, they measure only 4.5 inches long by 3.25 inches high by 1.75 inches wide. Open, they measure 8.75 inches long by 3.25 inches high by 1.5 inches wide. The cord is stored inside the folded speakers when not in use. The speakers weigh about 11 ounces with four AA batteries in them.

I primarily use these speakers while talking the baby for a walk. I just put the speakers and MP3 player in the basket of the jogging stroller and we're off enjoying the fresh air and the music! I have also packed my cell phone, MP3 player and these speakers into a standard-sized waist fanny pack and enjoyed the music while bike riding--they are really compact and portable, and safer to use than headphones when out on the road.

The only thing that kept me from giving them 5 stars is the fact that the speakers seem to go through batteries pretty quickly, and I can't find an an adapter to use with them. I bought an RCA universal 300Ma adapter (the type that the instructions say is compatible with this set of speaker), but when I plugged it into the speakers, the sound was very staticky and the power light kept flashing off and on. I was afraid it would ruin the speakers so I unplugged it and now just use batteries.

Overall this is a nice set of speakers, they are cheaper than the competing brands and I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing travel speakers.

2 out of 5 stars Very large size for travel and mediocre sound   July 20, 2006

I have several pairs of portable speakers for my laptop but forgot to bring them on a recent trip and bought these based on the glowing reviews posted here. However, when I received the speakers I found that they are much larger in size and much lower in both quality of build and quality of sound than for example the Creative speakers. They have a huge and unstable footprint when opened (about 9 inches long and one inch deep) and are not particularly compact when folded either. The sound is not rich and they eat batteries amazingly fast, then begin to buzz. I do not recommend these speakers.
