Initial failure December 30, 2005 20 out of 20 found this review helpful
Hopefully, I received a faulty unit. For starters I had to tug on the connections after inserting, because if left fully inserted they disconnected the phone. After I was able to precariously maintain a connection, neither the names or numbers appear on incoming calls, it is completely unresponsive. The dial stays lighted all the time, which is quite a distraction, so much so, that I've taken it out of service the same day it was put in. I tried other caller ID units in its location to be sure everything else was alright, and the other old units work fine there, with the same cords. This is similar to an Oregon Scientific unit I tried last year that I was trying to replace for some of the same reasons this one has shown. I thought I'd give this a try since the name on it is different, for my wife likes the large screen and readability, but it not working also negates all that. I'm in the process of trying to return this but my several days of inquiry have not yet been answered. Later, Lara Tools working through Amazon gets 5 stars for their prompt attention to the problems of my first unit. Lara Tools did not wait for me to return the old unit, rather, they shipped a new unit along with a mailer for me to return my first unit free of any charge to me. That's service as good as it gets. Time will tell how the second unit operates but be not afraid of Lara Tools or Amazon, if it doesn't work they'll get you satisfied one way or the other.
Jumbo display works just fine May 12, 2006 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
I had no problems at all hooking up the unit. Total installation time was about 2 minutes, including putting batteries in. Display is bright and readable from 15 feet away.
Worthless January 12, 2008 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I read the reviews that suggest not to buy this product. I thought they were just unlucky, by getting a defective unit. Well I risked it and bought this any way. It turned out I was unluck also, or now I believe this product is bad by design. So I will also suggest that you don't get this item. The characters are unreadable. In order to be readable, the elements of the display must be clearly dark or clearly light. Non of the elements are clearly anything. They are constantly in some mix between light and dark.
If you really think hard you might be able to figure out what it is trying to say, but this is suppose to be easily read from a distance. And its not readable even up close.
Also who ever I got it from was not Amazon, it was a third party retailer and they had no return policy. Which suggests they know they have a defective product and they are just trying to get rid of them.
Don't waist you money on this one.
Great when it works February 23, 2007 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Great readable display but the review button quit working within a few days. Several times our phone line rang busy all day when it was connected. We tried it with different phones and took away the answering machine but had the same problem. It's now been 3 months and I need to try to return it to the manufacturer--it's a dud.
Hard To See For Legally Blind April 18, 2007 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this item for my legally blind mother in hopes she would be able to read the display. She could not. The contrast between the alphanumeric display and the background color is not great enough to make the numbers and letters pop. Even holding it up to her face she was unable to make out the display. The font style was a terrible choice also making it hard to read. It worked as advertised but the green background and black alphanumerics is a bad combination.
