3 out of 5 stars Good for the Price, but several negatives   February 12, 2008

I was looking for an inexpensive Zune-specific player for my office. We cannot turn music up loud (and they won't let us plug our Zunes or iPods into our computers) so my need was just to have reasonably good sound at low volume. This was the only inexpensive choice that charges the Zune, so I gave it a try.

Pros: 1. Sound is actually quite good with a surprising amount of bass considering its size and cost. It even has a tiny bass port in the back. 2. It keeps my my 2nd generation 80GB Zune charged and it fits (snugly) into the provided slot in the top. 3. It looks pretty nice - I got an all-black model and it has a good, clean design (but read the cons below).

Cons: 1. Why is the power converter the size of a Hummer? It's huge and weighs twice what the dock unit does! It gets hot when it's plugged in whether or not you are using the dock, thus I'm sure it's not energy efficient in any way. Stupid, backward 1950's design. Had I known this, I would not have purchased this product. 2. The volume knob is cheap feeling and way too sensitive. Since I have to keep it at a fairly low volume in my office, just touching the knob ever so slightly increases or decreases the volume too much. 3. The face material is a very thin black polyester cloth that had a huge, ugly paper "Designed for Zune" sticker in the corner put on at a random angle. Obviously it was not supposed to stay on the product, but removing it was nearly impossible. Picking it off snagged the fabric and left a bunch of sticky goo on the cloth. More stupid - what were they thinking?
